White Sox Boca Chica Baseball City 35-32 4th 9.5 GB *won 1st Half Division Championship Today s Game The Kannapolis Intimidators -- coming off three consecutive losses for the first time in two months -- continues its season-long road trip with the second game of six against the Rome Braves on Saturday. Rome dropped the Intimidators, 7-2, in the series opener. As a result, Kannapolis has slipped from a 3.0 game lead in the division into a first place tie with Hickory with less than two weeks left in the season. SALly Standings The Intimidators and Hickory Crawdads are now tied for first in the Northern Division 2nd Half standings at 35-25 and are still 2.0 games in front of Lakewood (33-26) in the with 10 games left in the regular season. Hickory (75-53) leads the Northern Division overall standings in 2011. If Hickory wins the 2nd Half, then the team with the next-best overall record will face the Crawdads in the division round of the playoffs, which is currently Kannapolis (72-56) by 2.0 games over Greensboro and Hagerstown, each at 71-59.. On the Mound Lefty Brad Furnish is coming off his strongest start since joining Kannapolis early this month, spinning 6.0 innings allowing one run on five hits against Augusta on Aug. 22. Furnish has continued to lower his ERA in each outing with the Intimidators, and is coming off his first quality start of the season. Last Time Out The Braves defeated the Intimidators 7-2 Friday. The Braves bounced back from an early two run Kannapolis lead as Sean Gilmartin and the rest of the Rome pitching staff shut out the Intimidators the rest of the game. First baseman Chris Garcia went 3 for 3 with two RBI on the night. After Keenyn Walker led off the game with a triple, Dan Black (17) hit a two out homer to give the Intimidators an early 2-0 lead. The Braves cut the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on an Edward Salcedo sacrifice fly. After Matt Weaver led off with a single and Tommy La Stella and Chris Garcia walked to load the bases, Salcedo brought the run home with the sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the third La Stella and Evan Gattis got the Braves going once again with back to back singles to start off the inning. Chris Garcia then stepped in the batter's box and delivered an RBI single to score La Stella. As Gattis was trying to move to third on the hit, center fielder Trayce Thompson's attempt to throw him out sailed into the Braves' dugout allowing Gattis to score and Garcia to move up to third. Salcedo then came to the plate and hit an infield RBI single to push the score to 4-2. The Braves then took advantage of two Intimidator errors and a wild pitch to score two more runs and cap off a five run third inning and make it a 6-2 game. The Braves continued their scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Salcedo hit his second infield RBI single. Tommy La Stella hit his second single of the night and moved around to third on two wild pitches before he scored on Salcedo's single to extend the lead to 7-2. Gilmartin (1-1) settled down after the first inning to shut down Kannapolis for four consecutive innings followed by four scoreless innings of relief from the Braves' bullpen to seal a 7-2 victory. Jon Bachanov (2-3) takes the loss for Kannapolis. Black Bear First baseman Dan Black ripped a two-out, two-run home run on Friday, his 17 th of the season for his league-leading 62 nd extra-base hit of the season. Black also leads the SAL with 40 doubles and 239 total bases. Black ranks second in the league with 93 RBI, 139 hits and is tied for second with 125 games played. Black s.293 batting average is 10 th best in the league. In August, Black is batting.355 (33-93) this month with four home runs and 21 RBI in 25 games. He has also been clutch at the plate, batting.382 (26-68) with six home runs and 40 RBI with runners in scoring position and two outs. Re-Trayce-ing the Bases All-Star outfielder Trayce Thompson has 24 home runs this year, one shy of the Kannapolis/Piedmont franchise record (Chris Carter, 25, 2007). Thompson has played in a league-high 126 games and has scored a league-high 87 runs. He is tied for third with 58 extra-base hits, ranks second in home runs, ranks fourth in total bases (221), and ranks fourth in RBI (82). Hold Me Closer Kannapolis started this road trip with four straight 1-run games. The Intimidators lost two straight 1-run games on Wednesday and Thursday and is now 19-17 in 1-run games this year. On the road, the Intimidators are 4-13 in 1-run games with all four wins coming in August. Extra! Extra!... The Intimidators are tied with Greenville for the most extra-inning wins in the SAL this year with nine. Kannapolis is 9-4 (.692) in extra innings this year and 4-3 in extra-innings on the road, including three extra-inning wins in the team s last four road games. Only Greenville has a better winning percentage in extra-innings this year (9-3,.750). Full-Phil-ing Starter The Intimidators improved to 10-0 in games started by Phil Negus this season including Tuesday s 5-4 extra-innings win in Augusta. Negus had one of his rougher outings, however, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits over 5.1 IP with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. The Later, The Better RHP Steven Upchurch has regained his early season form since returning to the bullpen at the end of July. Since July 31, his first appearance as a reliever after 10 straight starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP). In 12 starts this year, Upchurch went 1-7 with a 7.29 ERA (37 ER/45.2 IP) compared to going 4-2 with a 1.72 ERA (7 ER/36.2 IP) in 14 relief appearances. 2 nd Half Series Magic Information Number: 10 All-Time (Since 2003): Rome leads 39-23 2011: Braves lead 6-5 In Kannapolis: Intimidators lead 4-3 In Rome: Braves lead 3-1 One-Run Games: Braves lead 2-1 Extra-Innings: Series tied 0-0 2011 Meetings: Date Location Result/Time 6/5 KANNAPOLIS W 16-4 6/6 KANNAPOLIS L 1-2 6/7 KANNAPOLIS L 2-5 7/12 KANNAPOLIS W 10-4 7/13 KANNAPOLIS W 6-5 7/14 KANNAPOLIS W 6-1 7/15 KANNAPOLIS L 1-3 7/23 at Rome W 11-7 7/24 at Rome L 0-2 7/25 at Rome PPD (Rain) 7/26 at Rome L 8-9 8/26 at Rome L 2-7 8/27 at Rome 7:00 PM 8/28 (1) at Rome 2:00 PM 8/28 (2) at Rome 8/29 at Rome 8/30 at Rome 7:00 PM 7:00 PM August Games/Results 8/1 @LEX L, 7-8 (11) 21-16, 59-47 8/2 @LEX W, 3-2 21-16, 59-47 8/3 @LEX L, 1-5 21-17, 59-48 8/4 @LEX W, 8-2 22-17, 59-48 8/5 DEL W, 5-2 23-17, 60-48 8/6 DEL W, 14-6 24-17, 61-48 8/7 DEL W, 8-3 25-17, 62-48 8/8 DEL W, 4-3 26-17, 63-48 8/9 OFF 8/10 @HIC L, 0-4 26-18, 63-49 8/11 @HIC W, 3-0 27-18, 64-49 8/12 @HIC W, 5-4 (10) 28-18, 65-49 8/13 @HIC W, 7-3 29-18, 66-49 8/14 WVA L, 3-6 29-19, 66-50 8/15 WVA W, 5-4 30-19, 67-50 8/16 WVA L, 1-5 30-20, 67-51 8/17 WVA L, 2-4 30-21, 67-52 8/18 HAG W, 12-4 31-21, 68-52 8/19 HAG L, 1-6 31-22, 68-53 8/20 HAG W, 6-2 32-22, 69-53 8/21 HAG W, 2-1 33-22, 70-53 8/22 @AUG W, 3-2 (12) 34-22, 71-53 8/23 @AUG W, 5-4 (11) 35-22, 72-53 8/24 @AUG L, 2-3 35-23, 72-54 8/25 @AUG L, 1-2 35-24, 72-55 8/26 @ROM L, 2-7 35-25, 72-56 8/27 @ROM 7:00 PM 8/28 (G1) @ROM 2:00 PM 8/28 (G2) @ROM 8/29 @ROM 7:00 PM 8/30 @ROM 7:00 PM 8/31 OFF 9/1 GBO 7:05 PM 9/2 GBO 7:05 PM 9/3 GBO 7:05 PM 9/4 GBO 5:05 PM UPCOMING GAMES / PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS (Subject to change) / GAME TIMES 9/5 GBO 1:05 PM Sunday 8/28 at Rome RHP Phil Negus (4-0, 3.03, 11 th start) vs. RHP Willie Kempf (4-3, 3.81, 13 th August record: 15-7 start) 2:00 p.m. 8/28 at Rome RHP Chase Cooney (2-2, 4.46, 1 st start) vs. LHP Carlos Perez (4-9, 4.86, 23 rd start) Monday 8/29 at Rome RHP Matt Heidenreich (10-8, 4.13, 26 th start) vs. RHP Aaron Northcraft (5-8, 3.59, 18 th start) 7:00 p.m. Tuesday 8/30 at Rome LHP Spencer Arroyo (9-9, 3.48, 26 th start) vs. LHP Ronan Pacheco (5-7, 4.50, 17 th start) 7:00 p.m. MEDIA NOTE: Members of the media requesting information concerning the Kannapolis Intimidators team or community involvement are asked to contact the office of media and public relations at (704) 932 3267 or visit www.intimidatorsbaseball.com for more information.
