Game #49 (17-31) Away Game #30 (13-16) RHP Jake Cose (3-3, 1.95) vs. LHP Daniel Stumpf (3-2, 1.96) Tonight s Preview: After equaling the team s greatest offensive output of the season, the Intimidators (A, White Sox) face the Legends (A, Royals) in pursuit of their second series win this month. Kannapolis sends Jake Cose to the mound in his first outing since setting a career high with 13 strikeouts at Hickory last week. Lexington, which are 4-1 against Kannapolis, are back at.500 (26-26), while the Intimidators are 12.0 games back in the Northern Division. Kannapolis 3-5 in day games this season, including a 3-3 mark in road day games this season. Intimidating Starter: Jake Cose, 22, makes his team-leading 10th start of the season and a second start against the Legends after holding Lexington to one unearned run on three hits over 7.0 innings on May 13. While Cose owns the third-best ERA in the South Atlantic League at 1.95 (11 ER/50.2 IP), he has been even better in his four road starts, going 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA (3 ER/25 IP). He is tied for fourth in strikeouts (59) and fifth in highest strikeout/9 IP at 10.48. Cose struck out a career-high 13 Crawdads on Friday in Hickory in his team-leading fourth quality start of the season. He went four straight starts without allowing an earned run, spanning 24.2 innings from April 28 through May 18. Legendary Starter: Daniel Stumpf, 22, makes his ninth start of the season and sixth home start for the Legends. He is coming off consecutive losses his first two of the season, both on the road in which he has posted a 4.09 ERA (5 ER/11 IP). Stumpf s ERA would rank fourth in the SAL behind Jake Cose but he is currently one inning shy of qualifying. The right-hander has been even better at home, going 2-0 with a 1.48 ERA (4 ER/24.1 IP) in five starts. The Royals selected him in the ninth round of the June 2012 draft out of San Jacinto College, and he made his professional debut with Advanced Rookie Burlington, going 2-1 with a 1.55 ERA, striking out 34 batters over 29 innings and five saves in five chances in 19 relief appearances. About Last Night: The Intimidators matched their season-high with 13 runs while holding the Legends to two hits in a 13-1 win on Tuesday. Kyle Hansen (1-1) worked 6.0 scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing just one hit, and Braulio Ortiz worked the final 3.0 frames, giving up one hit a solo home run to Bubba Starling for the save (3). Leadoff man Micah Johnson hit a home run for a third straight game as all nine Intimidators batters hit at least one with six players logging two hits. Johnson led the team with four RBI, and eight of nine batters scored at least one run. Eight of nine Intimidators also drove in at least one run. A Healthy Margin: Kannapolis defeated Lexington by 12 runs Tuesday, the team s largest margin of victory this season. The Intimidators previous high margin of victory this year came April 12 in a eight-run victory over Hickory, 10-2. The team s largest margin of defeat in 2013 came four days ago when the Intimidators fell 14-3 at Hickory on May 25, an 11-run loss. Triskaidekaphobia: The Intimidators matched a season-high with 13 runs on Tuesday, a threshold met one other time this season, in a May 9 win at Asheville, 13-12. It s the first time Kannapolis has scored 10 runs since a 10-7 win at Asheville on May 12. The Asheville series is also the only series win for Kannapolis in the month of May (3-games-to-1). The Big Inning: With seven runs in the fifth inning on Tuesday, the Intimidators equaled their largest offensive output in a single inning this season. Kannapolis scored seven runs also in the fifth inning on April 24 against Rome in an eventual 11-4 win over the Braves. Good Bye-Bye-Bye Baseball: Micah Johnson launched his third home run in three games and his fourth of the season on Tuesday, a three-run shot to put Kannapolis up 5-0 in the fourth inning. He now has eight career home runs. The last Intimidators player to homer in three consecutive games was Chris Curley, who accomplished the feat twice last season en route to leading Kannapolis with 11 home runs before earning a promotion to Winston-Salem. Homeward Bound: Micah Johnson scored two runs on Tuesday, his eighth straight game to cross the plate. He continues to lead the SAL in runs scored, now with 48, and is third in the Minor Leagues in runs scored trailing Cedar Rapids Byron Buxton (A, MIN) and High Desert s Chris Taylor (High-A, SEA). Runner Like No Other: Micah Johnson leads all Minor League Baseball with 45 stolen bases this season. He is batting.319 (59-185), 11th best in the SAL. West Virginia s Raul Fortunado tripled Tuesday to tie Johnson for the league-lead with five triples. MMBOP: Starter Kyle Hansen earned his first career win on Tuesday with 6.0 scoreless innings over the Legends. He has allowed one run while striking out 13 over 12.0 innings in his last two starts after giving up 13 runs in 8.0 innings over his first two career starts. The White Sox selected Hansen in the sixth round of the June 2012 draft out of St. John s University. Michael in May: Michael Johnson went 2-5 on Tuesday, upping his average to.323 (42-130), ninth best in the SAL and second-best in the White Sox organization behind former Intimidator Josh Phegley, who is batting.329 for Triple-A Charlotte. During the month of May, Johnson ranks fifth in Minor League Baseball in on-base percentage (.505) and 10th with a.397 average (31-78). Roster Move: The White Sox signed outfielder Alex Llanos and assigned him to Kannapolis on Tuesday after placing outfielder Juan Ramirez on the disabled list. Llanos opened the season in the Royals system with High-A Wilmington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas before being released by Kansas City. Radio Broadcasts: Today s game can be heard through the Lexington Legends broadcast network through lexingtonlegends.com with Keith Elkins on the call.
