game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Monday, April 23 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA new orleans baby cakes (6-11) vs. oklahoma city dodgers (12-3) RHP Sandy Alcantara (0-0, 3.52) vs. LHP Manny Banuelos (2-0, 1.69) THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes conclude a six-game homestand today with the finale of an abbreviated two-game set against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. New Orleans fell in all four meetings at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark last week, and has gone 20-32 vs. OKC since they became a Dodgers affiliate in 2015. Following a 4-1 start to the campaign, the Baby Cakes have dropped 10 of 12 contests. YESTERDAY S NEWS Zac Gallen pitched 7.0 scoreless innings as the Baby Cakes shut out Oklahoma City, 2-0. After Gallen stranded the bases loaded in the third inning, the right-hander induced a double play to work around a one-out double in the fourth inning, then would only allow one more baserunner the rest of the way, finishing with four hits surrendered and five strikeouts. The Cakes were held off the board until the fifth, when Magneuris Sierra reached on his second infield single and Cristhian Adames doubled. The Dodgers intentionally walked Jonathan Rodriguez to load the bases, but Eduardo Paredes threw four straight pitches out of the zone to Rafael Ortega to force in a run, and Chad Wallach followed with a sacrifice fly. Drew Rucinski overcame a leadoff single in the eighth, and Sean Burnett recorded two outs in the ninth before Jumbo Diaz then needed just one pitch to get Donovan Solano to pop out and earn his second save. ON THE HILL Sandy Alcantara makes his fourth start, still in search of his first Triple-A victory. He turned in his first quality start on Tuesday vs. Colorado Springs, when On This Date... he held the Sky Sox scoreless on two hits over the first 5.2 innings until a walk and back-to-back singles brought in a run to deal Alcntara a third straight no-decision. The right-hander has limited opponents to a.214 batting average, including a.111 mark (3x27) for right-handed hitters. In his two starts at home, Alcantara has allowed two runs with 13 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. 2000: Omar Ramirez goes 4-for-5 and scores the winning run on a passed ball in the 10th inning of a 2-1 win over Nashville. Ramirez leads the league in both batting (.400) and on-base percentage (.513). JOHNNY G Johnny Giavotella is 2x9 with five walks and an RBI double in his first three games with the Cakes, playing on the same field where he helped Jesuit High School win the 2005 Louisiana state championship. Giavotella went on to earn All-American honors in his three seasons at the University of New Orleans before being drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round in 2008. In 26 pro games at the Shrine, Giavotella is batting.344 (33x96) with eight doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI. SLYKE FATHER, SLYKE SON Scott Van Slyke walked in a pinch hitting appearance on Saturday to boost his on-base percentage to.500, fourth-best in the PCL. Van Slyke leads the club in batting average (.364), hits (16) and walks (11) and and is tied for the lead in doubles (3), home runs (2), RBI (8) and runs scored (10). 31 ALWAYS The Baby Cakes announced last Thursday they would be retiring jersey 31 in honor of Wally Pontiff, Jr., who wore the number as an All-American third baseman at LSU prior to his passing in 2002. The Pontiff Classic featuring LSU has been played at the Shrine on Airline in Pontiff s native Metairie annually since 2004 and has raised more than $1.5 million for charitable organizations. The ceremony, marking the first number to be retired in franchise history, will take place July 27 when the Baby Cakes host Tacoma. GALLANT EFFORT Zac Gallen became the first Cakes pitcher to work 7.0 innings in a game since Scott Copeland went 7.2 innings last August 17 vs. Round Rock. Gallen owns three of the four quality starts by Baby Cakes pitchers this season and has turned in quality starts in five of his last seven regular season outings dating back to last year. FOR STARTERS Baby Cakes starting pitchers have surrendered only three runs in 28.0 innings (0.96 ERA) during the homestand. Colorado Springs hit.173 (13x75) with one extra-base hit in four games against Cakes starters, and the Dodgers were 4x24 (.167) against Zac Gallen on Saturday. BULLIED Over the last 12 games, the New Orleans bullpen owns a 6.26 ERA (32 ER/46.0 IP) and has allowed a home run in eight of those contests (nine total) while opponents have batted.332 (64x193). The relief corps is 1-6 during that stretch, during which the pen has suffered three blown saves. RISPY BUSINESS The Baby Cakes are hitting.209 (32x153) through the first 16 games, leading only Omaha (.190) among PCL clubs. NOLA ranked last in the league in each of the last two seasons, batting.250 with RISP in 2017, and.257 in 2016. The 11 men left on base on Saturday were a season high. STEAL AWAY The Baby Cakes are tied for fourth in the PCL with 14 stolen bases and have been caught only three times, the second-best success rate in the league (82.3%) behind Oklahoma City (84.6%). GOOSE EGGS New Orleans recorded its second shutout victory, one of six PCL clubs with multiple shutouts. The Cakes were involved in 24 shutouts last year and 26 in 2016, leading the league both seasons. SEIZE THE DAY NOLA finished last season winning nine of the last 13 day games, outscoring the opposition 63-29 in those victories. The Cakes have won two of the first three day games this season, and have scored 17 runs (5.67 per game); in their 14 night games, New Orleans has scored 41 runs (2.93 per game). SI SI SIERRA After opening the season 1x24 (.042) over his first six contests, Magneuris Sierra has hit safely in six of eight games, batting.278 (10x36) with four multi-hit efforts. Sierra was 3x34 (.088) in eight games batting leadoff, but is 8x26 (.308) in six games batting second. FAMILIAR RELATIONS The Cakes are playing all but one game in April against the same three opponents. NOLA is in the midst of playing 14 straight games against Colorado Springs and Oklahoma City, around a pair of five-game sets against Nashville. NAWLINS NOTES Yesterday was the Baby Cakes first postponement of 2018, after enduring 10 postponements or cancellations last year...
