FISH BITES Miami continues a six-game homestand with game two of four against the Atlanta Braves tonight at 7:10 p.m. Dan Thunder Straily, making his 21st start of the season, is facing the Braves for the 10th time in his career, going 4-3 with a 5.00 ERA; in three starts this season is 2-1 wth a 4.02 ERA. Atlanta is starting Mike Foltynewicz, who in 10 career appearances and nine starts against the Marlins is 5-1 with a 3.31 ERA; he is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his two starts against them this season. Miami snapped a stretch of 6 consecutive series losses by taking two of three from the Washington Nationals this past weekend at Nationals Park. Miami continued its better play by splitting a two-game series against the New York Yankees to open the current homestand. Tonight continues a stretch that will see the Marlins play 12 of 14 games at home from August 21-September 5. LAST NIGHT'S RECAP The Marlins dropped their seventh straight game to the Atlanta Braves in a 5-0 shutout. Miami was held hitless through the first four innings until Austin Dean led off the fifth frame with a double to center field. Rafael Ortega singled with one out in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Elieser Lilo Hernandez started for Miami, taking the loss after giving up three runs on three hits and two walks, with two strikeouts, over 3.0 innings. TODAY'S TRANSACTIONS The Marlins today placed LHP Jarlin Jarlin the Marlin García (right shin contusion) and Elieser Lilo Hernandez (right middle finger blister) on the 10-day disabled list, reinstated Kyle Bear Barraclough from the 10-day DL, and recalled Ben Meyer from Triple-A New Orleans. VS. THE BRAVES Tonight continues the second meeting between the division rivals in the last week, as Miami was swept in a four-game series at SunTrust Park from August 13-15, and marks final meeting of the 2018 season series. The Marlins have dropped seven straight to the Braves and trail the season series, 3-13. The seven straight losses to the Braves are the most since an eight-game slide from September 12, 2012-July 2, 2013. DEEP IMPACT Dan Thunder Straily has broken from the norm, as he has gotten more difficult to hit the more he faces a lineup. The first time through a lineup, opponents are batting.275 (44x160). The average increases to.284 (40x141) when facing a lineup for the second time. However, when facing a lineup for the third time, the average falls to a Major League best.143 (12x84). James Paxton ranks second on the list with a.177 average, followed by Reynaldo Lopez (.183), and Chris Sale (.186). Straily has allowed a.298 SLG the third time through, which ranks fourth behind Paxton (.255), Aaron Nola (.275), and Zach Eflin (.293). HOME FIRES BURNING Over their last 11 home games since July 28, the Marlins have posted a 2.83 ERA (105.0 ip/33 er) to mark the third-lowest ERA among National League staffs (sixth in MLB) at home in that span. They have limited opponents to a.216 average against, second in the NL and sixth in the Majors. Starters have allowed three-or-fewer runs nine times, including six starts of two-or-less runs allowed, and posted a 2.97 ERA (60.2/20), while the bullpen has allowed 13 runs over 44.1 innings pitched for a 2.64 ERA. ORTEGA TAKING CHARGE Rafael Ortega has posted a.302 average (16x53) since having his contract selected by Miami on August 10. He has recorded at least one hit in each of his last eight games to extend a career-long hitting streak, and is batting.375 (12x32) over those eight games. Since sliding into the leadoff spot on August 11, he has hit.306 (15x49) and gone 2x9 with three walks in his first plate appearance of the game. PROVING HIS WORTH Brian Andy Anderson leads all Major League rookies in games (128), at-bats (495), runs (68), hits (137), average with RISP (.385), and on-base percentage (.358); is tied for first in multi-hit games (40); ranks second in walks (50), three+-hit games (8), and RBI (54); is tied for second in doubles (26); ranks third in average (.277) and slugging (.396); is tied for third in triples (3); and tied for 12th in HR (9). On the defensive side, he leads all rookie outfielders with a.994 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 176 total chances. He also owns eight outfield assists, most among all ML rookie outfielders and just three off the Major League lead held by Billy Hamilton. He is on pace for 171 hits this season, which would rank as the second-most by a National League rookie since 2008, behind Corey Seager's 193 in 2016, and would be 10th-most by an NL rookie since 2000. He recorded 109 hits before the All-Star break, tying Rocco Baldelli for the second-most by a Major League rookie since 2003, behind only Hideki Matsui (114 in 2003). He is the only Marlins rookie in franchise history to record 100+ hits prior to the break. Anderson recorded 101 hits over his first 92 games of the season. Since 1958, 34 rookies have recorded 100+ hits in 92-orfewer games and went on to win Rookie of the Year honors, including most recently Aaron Judge (2017), Corey Seager (2016), Carlos Correa (2015), José Abreu (2014), Mike Trout (2012) and Buster Posey (2010).- Stats LLC CAMPUS TAKEOVER Players, alumni, staff, and Marlins Better Halves visited students and teachers at Kensington Park Elementary School this morning, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The day began with a back to school distribution in the morning.
