game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Saturday, May 12 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes begin an eight-game homestand tonight with the opener of a four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers. The Cakes swept four games at Werner Park last weekend, their first sweep in Omaha since May 19-22, 1997, taking five straight at Rosenblatt Stadium. YESTERDAY S NEWS Round Rock scored twice in the eighth inning and held off the Baby Cakes, 5-4 to salvage a series split. Tied 3-3, Willie Calhoun began the eighth-inning rally with a single as four straight batters reached base. Andy Ibanez put Round Rock on top with a single up the middle to score Calhoun, and Jose Cardona added a sacrifice fly to plate what proved to be the winning run. JT Riddle had a sacrifice fly in the ninth to bring the Baby Cakes within a run before Nick Gardewine retired Cristhian Adames for the final out to strand the tying run on base. Both teams were scoreless until Cardona homered off Ben Meyer in the fifth, but the Cakes rallied for three in the sixth to grab a 3-1 lead behind RBI singles from Adames and Austin Nola and a run-scoring triple by Rafael Ortega. The Express came right back with two in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double by Calhoun and a sac fly by Ibanez. Eric Campbell had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Baby Cakes. ON THE HILL Trevor Richards gets the call for his second consecutive start against Omaha, having defeated the Storm Chasers six days ago at Werner Park. Richards went 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits, charting the Baby Cakes eighth quality start in a row en route to his first Triple-A win. Richards began the year in the Marlins starting five, posting a 4.94 ERA in five starts, including a 10- strikeout effort against the Dodgers in his last outing on April 25. Richards was honored as the Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2017 by going 12-11 with a 2.53 ERA in 27 games (25 starts) between High-A Jupiter and AA Jacksonville. new orleans baby cakes (18-17) vs. omaha storm chasers (12-23) RHP Trevor Richards (1-0, 2.51) vs. RHP Scott Barlow (1-0, 1.08) On This Date... 1996: New Orleans belts out five home runs, including two each from Brian Banks and Kenny Felder, in a 7-1 win over Iowa. The duo went back-to-back in the fourth, and Felder s sixth inning blast followed a home run by Tim Unroe. FOR STARTERS Baby Cakes starting pitchers have a 2.49 ERA (40 ER/ 141.0 IP) over the last 23 games and opponents are hitting.207 (113x545). Last night was only the 10th time in the last 12 games the Cakes starter produced a quality start, after the staff had five in the first 23 games. New Orleans dropped to 11-4 when receiving a quality start. RIDDLE ME THIS JT Riddle went 0x4 last night, snapping a string of six straight multi-hit games. In 10 games since joining the Baby Cakes, he is hitting.429 (18x42) with three doubles, one triple, two home runs and 14 RBI. Since making his NOLA season debut on April 30, Riddle ranks fifth in the PCL in RBI, and is tied for sixth in hits and seventh in batting. He has hit safely in all six career games vs. Omaha, going 12x27 (.444) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBI. GOLDEN GOPHER Ben Meyer was named PCL Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (3 ER/14.0 IP) in a pair of starts against Round Rock and Omaha. Meyer gave up just five total hits, posting a.109 average (5x46) to lower his league-leading batting average against to.172 (21x172). He also leads in the PCL in WHIP (0.84) and is third in ERA (2.10). The Minnesota alum had finished 7.0 innings in two of his 26 career starts before doing so in both outings last week. Meyer is the first New Orleans pitcher to win the weekly honour since Justin Nicolino last July 3-9. HOT SOUP A night after seeing his 11-game hit streak snapped on Wednesday, Eric Campbell went 5x8 with two doubles and two walks over the final two games of the Round Rock series, giving him eight multi-hit efforts in the last 10 games. Over his last 16 contests, Campbell is batting.475 (29x61), second-best in the PCL in that span to Fresno s J.D. Davis (.484). His 29 hits and.521 on-base percentage also rank second to Davis (31 hits,.528 OBP) during that stretch, while his 13 RBI are tied for 10thmost. His two doubles last night marked the third two-double game for NOLA this season and first since Scott Van Slyke on April 9. RAFFY RAKES Rafael Ortega has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, and has picked up at least one RBI in each of the last three. Ortega is 8x8 in stolen base attempts, tied with Isaac Galloway for the team lead and a five-way tie for fourth place in the league. Colorado Springs is the only other PCL club to have two players with at least eight steals (Keon Broxton, Nate Orf). HIT PARADE NOLA reached double-digit hits for the seventh time in eight games and outhit the opposition 99-52 on the road trip. The Cakes batted.325 (99x305), including.389 (37x95) with runners in scoring position, boosting its road batting average from.243 to.277. New Orleans entered the trip with a PCL-worst.225 team batting average but now sits in 12th place at.250. LONELIEST NUMBER New Orleans has played 12 one-run games, going 5-7. The Cakes were 14-21 in one-run contests last year and a league-worst 23-39 in games decided by two runs or less. The Baby Cakes have played 19 games decided by one or two runs (9-10), tied with Oklahoma City and Omaha for the most in the PCL. MAGNIFICENT MAGGY Magneuris Sierra charted his 10th multi-hit game, tied with Isaac Galloway for second on the club behind Eric Campbell (12). Sierra has hit safely in 16 of his last 19 games, during which he is batting.321 (27x84). Sierra is hitting.308 (28x91) since moving into the second spot in the lineup, after going 5x40 (.125) batting leadoff. HOME SWEET HOME With wins in five of their last six home games, the Cakes own the third-best home record in the league at 10-5, trailing Oklahoma City (17-3), and Colorado Springs (10-4). This is their best home start since opening 10-4 in 2012. FAMILIAR RELATIONS The Baby Cakes are 9-3 thus far in a stretch of playing 24 straight games against Round Rock and Omaha. NOLA played each of its first 23 games against either Nashville, Oklahoma City or Colorado Springs. NAWLINS NOTES The Baby Cakes have won their last three series openers... Richards retired the first seven Red Sox he faced, including fanning Anthony Benintendi for his first career strikeout, but was nicked for five runs across the fourth and fifth innings and was dealt the loss. WALK THE PLANK Though he did not factor into the decision, Richards fired 7.0 innings of two-hit ball in his third start on 4/14 vs. Pittsburgh. He did not surrender a hit until Francisco Cervelli doubled with one out in the fifth and became the first Marlins rookie starter to work at least 7.0 innings and allow two or fewer hits since Justin Nicolino on September 26, 2015 vs. Atlanta. K MAN Richards struck out 10 Dodgers on 4/25 at Los Angeles, one shy of his career high set on June 2, 2017 vs. Dunedin while pitching for High-A Jupiter. Richards fell one out shy of qualifying for his first MLB victory in outdueling Clayton Kershaw, whose third-inning single was the only hit Richards surrendered. Richards was optioned to New Orleans the next day when Miami activated Martin Prado. DOMINANT DEBUT In his first career Triple-A start on 5/1, Richards blanked Round Rock on three hits into the eighth inning, when he was nicked for a pair of runs and settled for a no-decision. Richards racked up nine strikeouts, then a season high for a Cakes starter, and retired 11 in a row at one point. 2017 in review KING FISH Richards was honored as the Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Year by going 12-11 with a 2.53 ERA (41 ER/146.0 IP) in 27 games (25 starts) between High-A Jupiter and AA Jacksonville. He set career highs in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts (158) in his first full minor league season and led Miami s system in ERA and strikeouts. ALL-STAR NOD After going 7-4 with a 2.17 ERA (17 ER/70.2 IP) in 13 games with Jupiter, Richards was named a Florida State League All-Star. He was especially tough over his final four starts, going 3-0 with a 0.77 ERA with 30 strikeouts and two walks, culminating in a FSL Pitcher of the Week award after an 11-strikeout performance on 6/2 vs. Dunedin. NO JUNE SWOON The Marlins named Richards their Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June after going 4-0 with a 1.65 ERA, which included a win over Jackson in his Double-A debut on 6/23. TAKE A SEAT Richards recorded his second career 10-strikeout game when he blanked Biloxi for 7.0 innings on 7/9. From 7/1 through year end, his 71 strikeouts were fourth-most in the Southern League. CLOSING STRONG Richards did not surrender an earned run in three of his last five starts, helping Jacksonville clinch the second half division title.
