game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Tuesday, May 23, 2017 Security Service Field Colorado Springs, CO new orleans baby cakes (15-29) at colorado springs sky sox (25-15) RHP Stephen Fife (2-2, 4.42) vs. RHP Brandon Woodruff (5-2, 3.02) THE BABY CAKES The Cakes open a four-game road series tonight against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. New Orleans dropped six of seven meetings at Security Service Field last year, surrendering 64 runs (9.1 per game) in those contests, and is 11-20 overall against Colorado Springs over the last two seasons. YESTERDAY S NEWS Nick Noonan snapped a scoreless deadlock with a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning, and the Baby Cakes went on to defeat Las Vegas 5-1 to salvage the series finale. Moises Sierra reached on an error to lead off the seventh and advanced to third with two outs before Noonan laced a single to left, and scored one batter later on a single by Brandon Barnes. In a steady rain, the Cakes put the game out of reach an inning later courtesy of Ramon Cabrera s three-run home run. Hunter Cervenka allowed a leadoff homer to Brandon Nimmo in the ninth to break up the Baby Cakes shutout bid before the game went into a rain delay and was eventually called following a 30-minute wait. Chris O Grady fired 5.0 shutout frames in his second start of the year, and Brandon Cunniff picked up the win with a pair of scoreless innings. ON THE HILL Stephen Fife takes the mound for his eighth start of the season, in search of back-to-back wins. Fife limited Salt Lake to only two unearned runs in 6.0 innings on Thursday to pick up the victory, the first time he surpassed the 100-pitch plateau since his last Major League outing on May 4, 2014. Fife has spun 6.0 innings in each of his last three starts, during which opponents have batted.242 (16x66), after yielding a.381 average (40x105) over his first five games. In his lone previous start vs. Colorado Springs on August 16, 2012, Fife was hammered for nine runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. On This Date... SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS The Cakes have still yet to win a series, having lost five and split six, marking the longest drought without a series win to begin a season in franchise history. The 2004 club went seven series - losing four and splitting three - to open the campaign. The Baby Cakes averted suffering their first series sweep of the season, and the club s first-ever sweep at the hands of Las Vegas. 2011: Joe Thurston gets hit by a pitch three times in a 14-1 win at Sacramento, tying the PCL record held by six others, most recently Tucson s Carlos Quentin in 2005. SI SI SIERRA Moises Sierra has hit safely in 18 of his last 24 contests, collecting four doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI in that span to go with a.275 batting average (25x91). He had a hit in six of seven games on the last road trip, including homers in back-to-back games on May 9-11. DIRTY THIRTY The Cakes are looking to avoid becoming the second minor league club to reach 30 losses this season. Class A Winston-Salem of the Carolina League is 14-31, and AA Birmingham (15-29) is off tonight. The earliest New Orleans has ever hit 30 losses was in the 48th game of the year in 2009. JUENGEL BELLS Matt Juengel has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 starts, batting.311 (14x45). Juengel hit.353 during a nine-game hit streak from May 9-18, the longest by a Baby Cake this season, with four doubles, one triple, one home run and five RBI. Juengel owns a.328/.405/.516 slash line in 22 games on the road, compared to.192/.213/.329 at home. He was just 7x39 (.179) in 12 games vs. Colorado Springs last season. THE LONG BALL New Orleans has hit a home run in 10 of the last 13 games. The Cakes have blasted 39 home runs this season, 27 of which have come at the Shrine on Airline. The Baby Cakes 23 home runs this month are tied for sixth-most in the PCL (Nashville, 41). MAY DAYS NOLA is hitting a league-worst.220 in May. Tomas Telis is hitting.111 (6x54) for the month, the PCL s lowest mark among qualified hitters. Over the last nine home games, the Cakes are 59x304 (.194) and have scored just 24 runs, 14 of which have scored on home runs (eight solo). BARNYARD Brandon Barnes snapped out of a 0x16 skid over his last six games by going 2x4 with an RBI last night. It marked his 12th multihit effort, second-most on the club to Steve Lombardozzi (13). Barnes leads the club with a.344 batting average (11x32) with runners in scoring position. SHALL NOT PASS Baby Cakes catchers have combined to throw out 20x45 baserunners this season, a 44.4% rate which is second-best in the PCL to Colorado Springs (52.9%). New Orleans backstops gunned down 30.9% of runners last year. STEAL AWAY New Orleans baserunners are 38x48 on the year (79.1%), the third-best success rate in the league behind Reno (82.5%) and Sacramento (81.3%). The Baby Cakes 38 steals rank fifth in the PCL. BREAKING OUT Ramon Cabrera went 2x4 with a three-run homer last night to bust out of a 2x31 (.065) slump over his previous 11 games. He has hit safely in seven of his last 11 starts behind the plate with four multi-hit games, two doubles, two homers and nine RBI. IN A PINCH Chad Hinshaw has reached base safely in all three of his pinch hitting opportunities, delivering an RBI single and a pair of walks. Baby Cakes pinch hitters are 6x27 (.222) with four walks on the year. CATCHING UP Although Cakes catchers are hitting.145 (10x69) over the last 17 games, Tomas Telis, Carlos Paulino and Ramon Cabrera have all homered in the last five games. ROSTER MOVES Right-hander Drew Steckenrider has been recalled by the Marlins, who placed David Phelps on the bereavement list. This is the first big league promotion for Steckenrider, who leads all PCL relievers with a.125 batting average against (9x72) and had notched a 0.59 ERA (1 ER/15.2 IP) over his last 13 appearances. Scott Copeland was re-added to the active roster in a corresponding move. NAWLINS NOTES Chris O Grady turned in the Cakes third start of at least 5.0 scoreless innings in the last five games... Nick Noonan charted his first multi-hit effort as a Baby Cake... NOLA finished 5-11 in a stretch of 16 consecutive games against Pacific Conference foes... New Orleans added three runs to its eighth-inning season total of 38, their highest-scoring frame... He made 102 pitches, the first time he reached the century mark since his last MLB start on 5/4/14 against the Marlins. THAT S QUALITY Despite pitching on short rest and taking the loss on 5/8 at Tacoma, Fife turned in his first quality start since July 8, 2014 by limiting the Rainiers to five hits and two runs (one earned) in 6.0 innings. Fife had not completed 6.0 innings since that 2014 quality start while with Albuquerque. LEFTOVERS Through his first five outings, Fife yielded a.576 batting average (19x33) to left-handed hitters. Overall, the opposition was batting.381 (40x105), the highest mark among PCL starters. WINNER WINNER With 5.0 scoreless frames on 4/22 vs. Omaha, Fife earned his first victory in nearly three years. His last win came on on June 27, 2014 vs. Reno, as he made just three more starts before undergoing Tommy John surgery. INDECISIVE Fife did not factor into the decision in either of his first two starts on 4/10 vs. Memphis and 4/17 at Omaha. He allowed a combined eight runs in 9.2 innings, with opponents batting.386 (17x44), but limited the damage by yielding a.167 average (3x18) with runners in scoring position. 2016 in review WITH IOWA Due to injury, Fife was limited to seven starts for the Iowa Cubs. In his season debut vs. Round Rock, he was roughed up in three innings, giving up four earned runs. However, he bounced back in his second start on 4/13 limiting New Orleans to two hits in 4.1 scoreless innings before leaving with a right side strain. After spending six weeks on the disabled list, Fife worked 4.0 shutout frames with five strikeouts and two hits vs. El Paso on 5/23. ON THE DL After his start on 5/23 vs. El Paso, Fife was placed on the disabled list on 5/24 and missed nearly three months of the season. REHAB Fife made three rehab starts in the Arizona Rookie League. His first on 8/3 was a 3.0 inning game in which he gave up one run on one hit (10 AB). Overall in his three starts, he went a total of 8.0 innings with a.281 against leading to a 4.50 ERA. FINISHING STRONG On 8/17, Fife rejoined the Iowa rotation in a game vs. Sacramento in which he allowed three runs across 4.0 innings. In each of his remaining four starts, pitched 4.0 innings, including scoreless outings on 8/22 vs. Memphis and 9/1 at Nashville. WINTER BALL Once the season concluded, Fife made five starts for Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League, going 1-1 with a 4.64 ERA (11 ER/21.1 IP). 2017 season W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 2-2 4.32 8 41.2 56 23 20 11 32 Home Games: Away Games: Day Games: Night Games: vs. Left-handers: vs. Right-handers: April: May: June: July: August/September: 2017 splits (aaa) 2-0, 4.05 ERA 0-2, 4.57 ERA 0-0, 5.79 ERA 2-2, 4.14 ERA.411 (30x73), 0 HR, 5 BB, 10 K.265 (25x91), 3 HR, 6 BB, 22 K 1-1, 5.03 ERA 1-1, 3.68 ERA 0-0, 0.00 ERA 0-0, 0.00 ERA 0-0, 0.00 ERA 2017 highs/lows (aaa) Innings: 6.0 Three times (recent: 5/18 vs Salt Lake) Most Hits Allowed: 10 5/4 vs. Iowa Least Hits Allowed: 5 5/8 at Tacoma Most ER Allowed: 5 4/10 vs. Memphis Least ER Allowed: 0 4/22 vs. Omaha and 5/18 vs. Salt Lake Strikeouts: 6 4/22 vs. Omaha Walks: 2 Five times (recent: 5/13 at Reno) Homers Allowed: 1 Three times (recent: 5/13 at Reno) Winning Streak: W1 Twice Losing Streak: L2 4/28-5/8 Shortest Start: 4.0 5/4 vs. Iowa Pitches Thrown: 102 5/18 vs. Salt Lake last time (AAA) Win: 5/18/17 vs. Salt Lake Loss: 5/8/17 at Tacoma Quality Start: 5/18/17 vs. Salt Lake Complete Game: - Shutout: - career vs. opponent W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 0-1 17.36 1 4.2 11 9 9 1 1 day-by-day starts DATE OPP.
