Today s Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) look to end a seven-game drought when they host the Grasshoppers (A, Marlins) in Game 2 of this 4-game series. The Hopper used a pair of home runs to top Kannapolis, 2-1, in the series opener, extending their season-series lead, 5-games-to-3. The Intimidators offense will try to end a stretch of scoring just five runs over the team s last four games, including a shutout loss in the previous series against the West Virginia Power. Mike Recchia makes his fourth start for Kannapolis and first appearance against Greensboro on the heels of a rain-shortened outing in Hickory. The Hoppers counter with Daniel Oliver, who will make his third start against the Intimidators this season. Party Like It s 1999: Tonight the Intimidators will Salute to the Piedmont Boll Weevils, the former moniker of the Kannapolis-based Minor League Baseball franchise. The team will don throwback uniforms, which fans can bid on through a silent auction, which runs through the end of the sixth inning. The Boll Weevils served as the Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1996-2000 after the team relocated from Spartanburg, playing the 1995 season as the Piedmont Phillies. The team changed MLB affiliates and nicknames for the 2001 season, becoming the Kannapolis Intimidators, Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Sally League Standings: Kannapolis has lost a league-high seven straight games to fall into last place in the SAL Northern Division standings. The Intimidators are 6.5 games out of first place while Greensboro ranks third, 1.0 game behind first-place Hickory (13-8). Intimidating Starters: Mike Recchia, 24, has worked just 6.0 innings in July after his most recent start was limited to 1.0 inning due to rain July 6 at Hickory. The former Yankees farmhand earned a win two starts ago against Augusta, his third of the season. He has struck out 17 batters while walking two in 15.2 innings this season. Recchia has yet to face the Hoppers in his career, including 22 games with Charleston in 2011 when he went 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in the SAL. The Sox signed Recchia out of the independent Frontier League where he opened the season with Windy City. Last season he went 11-3 with a 2.51 ERA and a league-high 177 strikeouts in 150.1 innings for the Thunderbolts and was named the league s Pitcher of the Year. Recchia went undrafted out of Eastern Illinois and was signed by the Yankees in 2010. Hoppers Hurler: Daniel Oliver, 22, makes his tenth start of the season and third against Kannapolis after taking no decision in his first two starts. He has 2.70 ERA (3 ER/10 IP) in two games against the Intimidators. His last two appearances have come out of the bullpen, his only relief appearances of the season. Oliver earned a win in his most recent start, a quality outing against Delmarva in which he allowed a run over 6.0 innings. He is holding left-handed hitters to a.200 average (18-90) while righties are batting.271. He spent last season as a reliever for Greensboro, facing Kannapolis four times, going 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA (3 ER/8.2 IP). Oliver finished the 2012 season with High-A Jupiter after going 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 29 games in the SAL. The Marlins selected Oliver in the eighth round of the June 2011 draft. About Last Night: Jesus Solorzano and Blake Barber hit solo home runs, and Greensboro s pitchers took care of the rest, limiting the Intimidators to a run on 10 hits in a 2-1 win Friday. Chad James (1-2) earned his first win of the season with 5.0 scoreless innings. Kannapolis found the scoreboard in the sixth as Keon Barnum doubled, and Brent Tanner drove him in on a base hit, one of his three on the night. Euclides Leyer took the loss despite a quality start, working 6.0 innings and surrendering two runs for his league-leading 12th loss of the season. Triple the Tanner: Brent Tanner went 3-3 with an RBI and a walk Friday as the DH, his second 3-hit game with Kannapolis. On May 25 at Hickory, Tanner was 3-4. This season, he is batting.286 (8-28) as a designated hitter compared to.240 (24-100) when playing the field. Hard-Luck Leyer: Euclides Leyer spun his team-leading seventh quality start but suffered a loss Friday, his fourth straight defeat in a quality start. He worked 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on a pair of solo home runs, three hits while walking three and fanning two. The loss is his SAL-leading 12th, tied for the most in the Minors. He leads the league with 18 games started, at-bats against (361), total batters faced (416), earned runs allowed (56) and is tied for the SAL-lead in hit batters (13). Leyer is tied for third in innings pitched (91.0) and tied for fourth in home runs allowed (11). He has now taken a loss in his last nine decisions. Leyer gave up two home runs, the fifth time an Intimidators pitcher has allowed two in a game. Anderson Aboard: Tim Anderson went 1-5 Friday, extending his on-base streak to a careerhigh 10 games, reaching base safely every game since June 30. The White Sox first round pick is batting.302 (26-88) with six RBI, four doubles and two triples 22 games. After going 0-4 in his professional debut, Anderson went on a nine-game hitting streak, batting.390 (16-41) from June 21-29. He has reached safely in 20 of his 22 career games played. The NJCAA named him the 2013 David Rowlands Award winner as the nation s top male student-athlete. Slippery Slope: Kannapolis has lost seven straight, it s second-longest skid of the year. The Intimidators dropped nine straight games April 25 through May 6, snapping the streak with a 4-2 win over Greensboro in the second game of a doubleheader. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native is the highest drafted shortstop to come straight from a two-year college since Glen Franklin of Chipola (Fla.) was taken with the ninth overall pick in the 1978 draft. Leading all of DII baseball with a.495 batting average in 2013, Anderson ranked 12th in DII with 18 doubles and hit 11 triples - third most in DII. The first team All-American recorded 10 home runs on the year, compiling an.879 slugging percentage - second highest in the DII ranks. Anderson drove in 45 RBIs during the season and ranked fourth in DII with 41 stolen bases. Closing out his career as a Warrior, Anderson spurred East Central on to a 32-21 record and the Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges championship.
