A shootout win then is worth two points in the standings while the team that loses the shootout receives just one point for the tie. Teams play a 24-game conference schedule. NCHC Facts and Figures The NCHC continues to boast the best non-conference record among the six conferences by a wide margin with a 37-18-2 (.667) mark (WCHA is second at.529), going.500 or better against all the other leagues. The NCHC is 11-7-0 against the WCHA this season with No. 12/12 Omaha hosting WCHA foe Alabama-Huntsville in the only games in the NCAA this weekend. Colorado College swept UAH to open the season. NCHC teams are 16-10-2 against ranked non-conference foes this year. The NCHC s success shows in the national polls as the NCHC finished the first half of the season with five teams ranked in the top 12 of both national polls. The five ranked teams are the most by any conference in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. (page 6) Omaha enters its series with the Chargers on a three-game winning streak following a sweep of St. Cloud State, which earned the Mavericks the honor of College Hockey News Team of the Week. It s the second time UNO has claimed the honor this year and the fourth time a NCHC team has won it. (page 4) Friday s win over SCSU was Omaha head coach Dean Blais 100th victory behind the UNO bench. According to the latest KRACH Ratings, NCHC teams have played seven of the 17 toughest schedules in the NCAA. No. 10/7 Minnesota Duluth has faced the toughest schedule while UNO (second), No. 6 Miami (fourth), SCSU (fifth) and No. 2 North Dakota (10th) all rank in the top 10. Miami junior forward Sean Kuraly leads the NCAA with seven gamewinning goals this season while Omaha sophomore forward Austin Ortega is second nationally with six after scoring both game-winners last weekend to earn him NCAA Second Star of the Week honors. (page 4) No other player in the country has more than four game-winners. The NCHC is home to two of the top three goal-scoring defensemen in the country and four of the top eight. UMD junior Andy Welinski and Denver senior Joey LaLeggia are tied for second among defensemen with six goals each while WMU junior Kenney Morrison and UND freshman Tucker Poolman are tied for fourth with five goals each. Miami senior forward Austin Czarnik is yet to score a goal this year but ranks second nationally with 17 assists in 16 games. UMD sophomore forward Dominic Toninato, meanwhile, is tied for third nationally with 13 goals, three more than any other NCHC player. DU forward Danton Heinen ranks second nationally among freshmen with 17 points. Omaha forward Jake Randolph is tied for third with 16 points and UND forward Nick Schmaltz is tied for seventh with 15 as the NCHC has three of the top nine rookie scorers in the NCAA. WMU forward Frederik Tiffels seven goals tie for second among NCAA rookies. North Dakota junior goaltender Zane McIntyre is tied for the NCAA lead among goaltenders with 13 wins this year while Miami junior Jay Williams and UMD freshman Kasimir Kaskisuo are tied for third with 11 wins, which is the most among any rookie netminder in the NCAA. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation also helped pay for the Penrose Cup. The RedHawks are tied for first place in the NCHC standings at 7-3-0-0. The seven league wins and 21 conference points already surpass last year s total. While the RedHawks have been idle since Dec. 6, senior forward Austin Czarnik is still pacing all NCHC skaters with 17 assists, a total that ranks second nationally. Miami s offense has been impressively balanced thus far. Seven skaters have recorded at least 10 points through the first 16 games, including four with 16 or more points (Czarnik, senior Blake Coleman and juniors Riley Barber and Sean Kuraly). Defensively, the Red and White have shaved close to a goal off their scoring defense with a 2.19 figure this season (3.03 in 2013-14). UMD took the opener 3-1 before the host Huskies pulled out a 4-3 victory the following night by scoring the game-winning goal with 18.4 seconds remaining in regulation. With the exception of a two-game home series with Colorado College in early December, UMD has faced all nationally-ranked teams thus far, including last weekend s split with No. 4 MTU. The Bulldogs have played the toughest schedule in the country according to the KRACH Ratings. Sophomore forward Dominic Toninato, the reigning NCHC Offensive Player of the Week, scored three times in the two-game series at Michigan Tech to boost his season goal total to 13, which is a career high and ties for the third highest total in the country. Junior center Tony Cameranesi has pieced together UMD s longest active scoring streak -- five games -- while rookie right winger Karson Kulhman has points in eight of his last nine outings.
