CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA Hickory Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2010 A Message from your 2010 Golf Committee Spring is coming and so is another season for the Hickory Chapter A.S.G.A. We look forward to a successful year and to insure this, we have a few ideas for our association: Our "nine and dines" will be played at Rivercrest, Catawba Springs, Hampton Heights and Granada Farms. Our nine hole format will be stroke play so we can work on our games and achieve a ASGA handicap. 5- nine hole rounds need to be recorded for a legitimate handicap and qualifies you to compete. 18 hole rounds can be light-hearted like Captains Choice, Shambles and other fun formats that are chosen by the host. We all need to sign up to host an event at a course of your choice. The golf committee will help you negotiate prices or help in area you need. Please let your host know if you are playing by specific cut-off days. Thurs. is the cut-off for Sat. rounds and Fri. is the cut-off for Sun. play. A day before should be sufficient for "nine and dines". To qualify for the championship, 5 events need to be played. In order to speed up our play, we need to play "ready golf" and keep up with the group ahead of you. Keep players moving within your own group. Course marshalls will evaluate our speed. "In the leather putts" will be allowed, to speed up play around the greens. If it isn't one of your better holes, double par should be taken and pick up. Men 65 and older can have the option to play Senior tees. We want to make it easier on our handicap person. Could you please note on your scorecard which tee box you are playing that day. Full names should be written instead of initials and please post real numbers for strokes, not + 1 or - 1 etc. Our 1 club relief, no closer to the hole rule will be in effect. No relief is taken in hazards. When playing for individual prizes, men and women will receive winnings from their respective pots. We will publish the calendars of our neighboring ASGA groups, as they have welcomed us to join them. We need to network, publicize, invite people, and find new ways to grow our chapter. Any ideas and help with publicity is welcome. The rules of golf should be observed. A USGA rule pamphlet will be given to everyone to keep in your bag. If you have something questionable, go to your book. Rules are made to keep a game fair and free of controversy. Everyone get involved! This is Your association and one of the greatest games in the world. Please call with questions or concerns... ~Kim Welch, Will Sloan, Larry Hollifield, Harlin Murray, and Gary Ikerd Hole In One - Joanne Harvey Friday Jan 22nd, Highlands Ridge North, Sebring, Fla. 120 yd par three, 7 wood. Rules and More Rules Larry was having a particularly bad start on hole number 7 last weekend. After a beautiful practice swing he stepped up to the ball on the tee and made a stroke at the ball and caught nothing but air. While this is a good term if shooting hoops, it is a whiff when playing golf. Somewhat embarrassed, he again addressed the ball but accidentally knocked it off the tee. He lifted it back on the tee and said, well I guess this means I am now lying one (1), hitting two (2). Was Larry correct? What is the correct answer and why? A. Yes Larry is correct, Lying One (1) hitting two (2) is correct. Take a penalty for whiffing your tee shot, but replace your ball without penalty for accidentally knocking it off the tee. B. No, Larry is not correct, he still hitting one (1). No contact was made on the whiff stoke, so no stroke is counted. Likewise, a ball falling off a tee does not incur a stroke. Larry may have looked awkward, but he was still lying zero (0) and was facing his first stroke. C. No, Larry is not correct, he is lying two (2) hitting three (3). Count one stroke for his whiff and one penalty stroke for moving his ball while it was in play and replace it. D. No, Larry is not correct, he is lying two (2) hitting three (3). Count one stroke for his whiff and one penalty stroke for moving his ball and play it as it lies. And the Answer is.. The correct answer: C. When Larry made a stroke at the ball, it was a stroke and counted as a stroke, even though he whiffed the ball. At that point the ball is deemed to be in play. Rule 11-3 regarding a ball falling off the tee no longer applies. When the ball moves after it is addressed, you incur a penalty stroke and must replace the ball as per (Rule 18-2b). Larry is lying two (2) hitting three (3). Count one stroke for his whiff and one penalty stroke for moving his ball while it was in play and replace it.
