PEBLDS Adopted in 1995 to support the implementation of the CBD in the pan-european region Sept. 2009, Council decision to develop a new Strategy / Secretariat provided solely by UNEP Bureau meetings held in Nagoya (CBD COP10) and Geneva (Apr 2011), stakeholder conference in Gabala, meeting with biodiv MEAs (Geneva, Jan 2011), Council meeting in Geneva (June 2011) to review, amend and endorse a draft Pan-European 2020 Biodiversity Strategy

New Pan-European 2020 Strategy for Biodiversity Reinforces the added value of a pan-european approach: Integrates biodiversity into landscape concerns Addresses all biological and landscape diversity initiatives under one pan-european approach Promotes the integration of biological and landscape diversity into social and economic sectors

New Pan-European 2020 Strategy for Biodiversity Implementation and follow-up of SP at pan-european level While EU countries have their own coordination mechanism, non-eu ones rely on a pan-european approach Regional forum for the preparation, implementation and follow-up of CBD Flexible platform to debate and give answers to political and technical questions

New Pan-European 2020 Strategy for Biodiversity Informal platform of exchange for CBD implementation in pan-europe; Sounding Board for policy development and implementation; Enhancing coherence at national and pan-european scale of biodiversity policies and priority actions; Informal platform of exchange of views, expertise and experience to support the pan-european contribution to incountry TEEB activities and other relevant biodiversity international processes.

PEBLDS 2020 Action Plan and Activities(2) Capacity building via the Implementation of CBD Strategic Plan through Capacity Building, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Thematic supporting actions and capacity building at pan- European or sub-regional level on topics related to restoration of ecosystems, indicators development linked to SEBI process, TEEB Biodiversity in Europe Conference in Georgia in 2013 and CBD NBSAP workshop in Moldova (Sept 2012)

PEBLDS 2020 Activities: 2012-2013 Capacity building training for government officials, policy makers, and NGOs to implement the CBD Strategic Plan 2011-2020 in EECCA countries focusing on ecosystem restoration, preservation of wetlands and the ratification of ABS Protocol. Supported by

Capacity building training Key elements of the preparation phase (First semester 2012): Technical analysis to understand how knowledge should be aggregated/presented in order to be easily assimilated by trainees Discussions with CBD, Ramsar to verify/validate the content of the modules Development of the first modules (Ecosystem restoration)

Capacity building training Key elements of the implementation phase (Second semester 2012 2013): Sub-regional and regional workshops will be organised and managed by local partners Training Packages will be adapted based on the results of these workshops First workshop to take place in September 2012, Moldova
