Hello and Welcome to the January to March edition of the Derbyshire Dales Walking for Health Guide. Entry Level Walk: Up to 30 minutes Suitable for people who have not walked much before, are working to be more active, or are returning from injury or illness. The walks are on flat ground or gentle slopes with mainly firm surfaces with no stiles. Very Easy Walk: 30 75 minutes Suitable for people looking for gentle exercise, to lose weight and have a more active lifestyle. Routes are chosen to ensure the walks are on good surfaces and designed to increase your heart rate. Easy Walk: 60 90 minutes The walks will suit walkers who would like to go that bit further. Walks may include stiles and slight uphill and downhill on rougher terrain. Moderate and Long Progression Walks: 90 120/120 180 minutes Longer, more challenging walks which are likely to include stiles, uphill and downhill walking on rougher terrain. The table below sets out the regular weekly walks around the district. If walking from a Leisure Centre, the route is chosen on the day. The walks are designed to be social and enjoyable and enable parents to share their experience and build on their fitness in a comfortable and safe environment without having to worry about childcare. Please bring your gold card as we often take the bus out of Bakewell and walk back. 5

Ashbourne Weekly Walks Wednesdays 10.30am, Long walks: 120 180 minutes Meet at Ashbourne Leisure Centre and share cars to go on the best walks in the southern Dales and beyond. Fridays, Moderate Walks: 90 120 minutes Meet at Ashbourne Leisure Centre. We sometimes walk from the Leisure Centre and sometimes car share to a starting point within a 10 minutes drive from the Leisure Centre. Tideswell Wednesday Easy Walks, Tideswell walks meet on the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of the month at Fountain Square, adjacent to the public toilets. We also share cars to walk further afield. Easy 60 90 minute walks around Tideswell and the surrounding area. Wednesdays January February March Tideswell, 4 18 1 15 1 15 Youlgrave Tuesday Easy Walk, 60 90 minutes, 10.30am Meet at Coldwell End Car Park in the village for an easy walk around Youlgrave area, Birchover and Stanton in Peak. Walking on the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday of the month. We also share cars to walk further afield. January February March 10 24 14 28 14 28 Wirksworth Weekly Walks Meet at Wirksworth Leisure Centre Reception Mondays 2.00pm Very Easy Walks (30 75 minutes) Easy Walks (60 90 minutes) A choice of 2 walks a very easy walk or a slightly longer easy walk you choose depending on how you feel on the day. Meet at Wirksworth Leisure Centre Reception - Wednesdays 9.45am Moderate Progression Walk (90 120 minutes) We share cars to walk further afield from different starting places. 6

The Derbyshire Federation for Mental Health Matlock Fridays 2.00pm Weekly Meet at the DFMH Base at Unit 7, Lime Tree Business Park, Lime Tree Road, Matlock DE4 3EJ at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start for local Easy walks for 60 90 minutes with a friendly group. All abilities welcome. Meet at 1.15 for a 1.30 2.30pm walk, with the opportunity for refreshments and a good chat afterwards! Our walks are short and Easy on good surfaces but may involve some stiles or ascents/descents over a short distance.in the event of extreme weather conditions, please contact the Centre beforehand on 01298 85162 to confirm the walk is going ahead Ashford in the Water: Meet near Holy Trinity Chuch, street parking available Thursday 5 January A walk around this historic village and across the fields towards Bakewell with lovely views of the river, lake and weir. Possibility of being a little muddy. Finishing with coffee and cakes at one of the local cafes. Hassop Station & Monsal Trail: Meet outside Hassop Station, car parking available Thursday 9 February A flat walk up the trail towards Thornbridge Hall Station and return. Coffee and cakes back at the Hassop Station café. Baslow to Chatsworth: Meet at main Derbyshire Dales Car Park at Nether End in Baslow behind the village hall. Thursday 9 March A lovely walk starting in Baslow village going through the wheelchair gate into Chatsworth Park, passing the cricket ground and following the river. Coffee afterwards. Disabled parking, good food, refreshments, accessible toilets (sometimes radar keys) and picnic tables are available bring a packed lunch or get some lunch at the cafes. 7 Monday 6 March Hassop Station on the Monsal Trail Come and join us at Hassop Station Café setting out at along the Monsal Trail from 11.00am for a lovely level walk. NEW, UP AND COMING EVENTS Spring Celebration Walks Wednesday 29 March 10.30am at Monsal Head Join us at spectacular Monsal Head - parking at the DDDC Car Parks (Fees) or on the road to Little Longstone. Walk options include: a long walk down into Monsal Dale following the river Wye up through Shacklow woods to Ashford In the Water and return (5.6 mls), up on to Longstone Edge (4.5 mls), over the top along Pennyunk Lane and down to Ashford in the Water (3.5 mls), and an Easy Walk into Great Longstone returning along the Monsal Trail (2.3 mls) New Nordic Walking - coming to the Whitworth Centre, Darley Dale in Spring Taster Sessions (45 minutes) in Whitworth Park from 3.00pm Wednesday 22 February and Tuesday 21 March 2017 We are planning to start some Nordic Walking this Spring in partnership with Lifefit. So here s a chance to try the basics of Nordic Walking in groups of 4 or 5 or individually if necessary. Nordic Walking has proven benefits for many health conditions including Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Parkinsons, Pulmonary Disease, and Menopause etc. Booking essential details to be finalised nearer the dates WE NEED YOU! Volunteer Walk Leaders Derbyshire Dales Walking for Health wouldn t exist without our fantastic walk leaders. We are now looking to expand all of our local walk leader teams. As a volunteer walk leader, you will be helping people in your community to get active and healthy, as well as ensuring walks are friendly, safe and well run. Walk leaders are also our ambassadors for walking, showing people that walking can really make a big difference to their lives.
