game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Thursday, May 3 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes conclude a fourgame homestand tonight with the series finale against the Round Rock Express. The Cakes dropped 11 of 15 meetings with the Express last year, including six in a row during one stretch, the longest drought in the 13- year history between the clubs. YESTERDAY S NEWS Tommy Joseph homered and added an RBI single to lead Round Rock past the Baby Cakes, 4-2. Joseph opened the scoring with a home run leading off the second. After the Baby Cakes answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Austin Dean, the Express strung together three straight two-out singles against Adam Conley, capped by Joseph s run-scoring knock to left field, and a second run crossed the plate when Dean misplayed the ball. Conley settled in to retire the next 11 batters en route to 8.0 strong innings, and the Cakes capitalized on a pair of defensive miscues in the sixth inning to get back within a run. But Round Rock scratched out an insurance tally against Sean Burnett in the ninth, and RJ Alvarez worked around Cito Culver s leadoff single in the bottom of the frame to record the save. The Cakes piled up 10 hits, but struck out 14 times and went 2x10 with runners in scoring position. ON THE HILL Zac Gallen is set for his sixth start of the season, looking to win a third consecutive start for the second time in his career, having won three in a row from July 16-26 last season with AA Springfield. He got the victory on Saturday in Nashville after yielding four runs and seven hits in 5.0 innings with nearly all of the damage coming in the Sounds four-run third, after which Gallen retired the final seven batters he faced, including the last four via strikeout. The right-hander has yet to surrender a run at home, tossing 13.0 shutout innings across a pair of wins while permitting a.178 batting average (8x45). new orleans baby cakes (11-15) vs. round rock express (10-17) RHP Zac Gallen (3-1, 3.10) vs. LHP Yohander Mendez (0-3, 6.66) On This Date... FOR STARTERS Baby Cakes starting pitchers have given up only 22 earned runs in 83.1 innings (2.38 ERA) over the last 14 games and opponents are hitting.207 (64x309). In the last nine home games, the opposition is hitting.184 (37x201), as Colorado Springs hit.173 (13x75) with one extra-base hit in four games against Cakes starters on the last homestand, and Oklahoma City was 9x46 (.196) before Round Rock went 15x80 (.188) the last three contests. CRAZY EIGHTS One day after Trevor Richards tossed 7.1 innings, establishing the longest outing by a Cakes starting pitcher this season, Adam Conley turned in 8.0 innings yesterday. It was the first time a New Orleans starter completed eight innings since Ivan Pineyro did so on August 25, 2015 vs. Las Vegas. Conley equaled his career high in innings pitched, matching his 8.0 shutout frames for the Marlins in a win over Atlanta on June 22, 2016. 2009: Chris Coghlan s three-run homer in the 10th inning caps a 4-for-5 night in a 12-8 win in Oklahoma City. Coghlan drives in four and scores three times and is promoted to the Marlins five days later, going on to win NL Rookie of the Year. BATTLE OF THE BAMBINOS The Baby Cakes and Scranton/Wilkes- Barre RailRiders, aka the Baby Bombers, are engaged in an online contest to determine which team has the better baby mascot. Fans are asked to visit www.battleofthebambinos.com and vote on Twitter through July 30. The team that loses the hashtag voting competition will donate $2,500 to the winning team s charity. The Baby Cakes have chosen the Junior League of New Orleans, and will be hosting five diaper drives at upcoming games to promote awareness. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean has gone 5x13 with three walks and three RBI in his first four Triple-A games. Dean was hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games with AA Jacksonville, the fourth-best average in all of Minor League Baseball, and yesterday was honored as the Southern League s Player of the Month for April after pacing the circuit in average, hits, total bases (53), slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.120). Dean s 39 hits overall are tied with former Marlins farmhand Josh Naylor, now with AA San Antonio, for the most in the minors. His.415 batting average (39x94) ranks third in the minors behind Peoria s Juan Yepez (.442) and Buffalo s Tim Lopes (.429). HOT SOUP Eric Campbell notched the third multi-hit effort in his last seven games, hitting safely in six of those contests. Over his last 12 games, Campbell is hitting.324 (12x37) with two doubles, a home run and 10 RBI, picking up at least one RBI in seven of those games. He is 10x27 (.370) in nine games at home, compared with 6x36 (.167) in 10 games on the road. THE WHIFF The Baby Cakes struck out 14 times, equaling a season high set on April 18 vs. Colorado Springs. The 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup fanned in each of their first seven at-bats and finished 1x12 with 10 strikeouts, including four by Jon Rodriguez, who also whiffed four times on April 7 vs. Nashville. BULLIED Over the last 21 games, the New Orleans relief corps owns a 5.12 ERA (44 ER/77.1 IP). The pen has six blown saves, tied with three other clubs for the most in the PCL. CLOSE CALLS Eight of NOLA s last 11 games have been decided by one or two runs, with the Cakes going 4-4 in those contests. New Orleans has played 15 such games, one more than Omaha for the league high. RISPY BUSINESS New Orleans went 2x10 with runners in scoring position yesterday and is a hitting PCL-worst.229 (53x231) with RISP on the year. NOLA ranked last in the league in each of the last two years, batting.250 with RISP in 2017, and.257 in 2016. He owned 19.64 ERA through his first three starts, during which opponents batted.488 (20x41). JUMBO-LAYA Jumbo Diaz has converted each of his four save chances, putting him tied for third place in the PCL, while the rest of the Cakes bullpen has gone 3x9. Diaz has surrendered one hit in 14 at-bats (.071) with runners in scoring position. He walked eight, struck out three and opponents batted.577 (15x26) with three homers. GALLANT EFFORT Gallen blanked Nashville on four hits for 6.0 innings in his season debut on 4/6, becoming the first New Orleans pitcher to finish with at least 6.0 scoreless innings in his team debut since Sam Dyson shut out Reno for 6.0 innings on August 5, 2013. SEVENTH HEAVEN With 7.0 shutout innings on 4/21 vs. Oklahoma City, Gallen became the first Baby Cakes pitcher to work at least 7.0 innings since Scott Copeland went 7.2 IP on August 17, 2017 vs. Round Rock. Gallen held the Dodgers to four hits and fanned five to record his second victory. 2017 IN REVIEW MOVING FAST Gallen saw time at three levels of the Cardinals system in his first full professional campaign, combining to go 10-8 with a 2.93 ERA (48 ER/147.2 IP) between High-A Palm Beach, AA Springfield and AAA Memphis. He ranked sixth among St. Louis farmhands in ERA and tied for fifth in victories. ALL-STAR Florida State League All-Star honors were bestowed upon Gallen after he went 5-2 with a 1.62 ERA in nine starts with Palm Beach. He surrendered one or no earned runs in seven of those starts and struck out 56 batters against 10 walks in 55.2 IP. YOU COMPLETE ME Gallen was credited with a 6.0-inning complete game in dropping the first game of a doubleheader on 4/13 at Clearwater, despite yielding just one run. He then fell one out shy of a complete game in his final FSL start on 5/30 vs. Lakeland, giving up one run and four hits in 8.2 innings. He owned the league s second-best ERA and third-best opponents average (.215) when promoted. DEBUTS With 5.2 innings of one-run ball on 6/6 at NW Arkansas, Gallen picked up the win in his Double-A debut. He then moved on to Triple-A for three starts from 6/26-7/7, including a win over New Orleans on 7/1 where he gave up one run and four hits with eight punchouts in 6.0 innings. IT S A MAJOR AWARD Upon returning to AA Springfield on 7/16, Gallen allowed one baserunner in 7.0 innings against NW Arkansas to be named Texas League Pitcher of the Week. He retired the final 14 batters he faced, including four of the last five via strikeout, after allowing a third-inning single. A REDBIRD RING Gallen joined the Memphis rotation in September, getting a pair of no-decisions at Colorado Springs, first in the regular season finale on 9/4 and again in Game 4 of the PCL Semifinals. He then took the loss in Game 4 of the PCL Finals at El Paso, yielding five runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. 2018 season W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 3-1 3.10 5 29.0 34 10 10 8 23 2018 splits (aaa) Home Games: 2-0, 0.00 ERA Away Games: 1-1, 5.63 ERA Day Games: 0-0, 0.00 ERA Night Games: 3-1, 3.10 ERA vs. Left-handers:.298(17x57), 1 HR, 5 BB, 12 K vs. Right-handers:.288 (17x59), 0 HR, 3 BB, 11 K April: 3-1, 3.10 ERA May: -- June: -- July: -- August/September: -- 2018 highs/lows (aaa) Innings: 7.0 4/21 vs. Oklahoma City Most Hits Allowed: 10 4/16 at Oklahoma City Least Hits Allowed: 4 4/6 vs. NAS and 4/21 vs. OKC Most Runs Allowed: 4 4/16 at OKC and 4/28 at NAS Least Runs Allowed: 0 4/6 vs. NAS and 4/21 vs. OKC Strikeouts: 5 Three times (recent: 4/28 at NAS) Walks: 3 4/21 vs. Oklahoma City Homers Allowed: 1 4/16 at Oklahoma City Winning Streak: W2 4/21 - current Losing Streak: L1 4/11 at Colorado Springs Shortest Start: 5.0 4/16 at OKC and 4/28 at NAS Pitches Thrown: 95 4/28 at Nashville last time (AAA) Win: 4/28/18 at Nashville Loss: 4/11/18 at Colorado Springs Quality Start: 4/21/18 vs. Oklahoma City Complete Game: -- Shutout: -- career vs. opponent W-L ERA G IP H R ER BB K 0-0 0.00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 day-by-day starts DATE OPP.
