Have you ever been on a ski bus, on the slope, or at après ski bar and heard some people talking ski tech and wondered what they were referring too? Well by learning and remembering some important, and some not so important, terms and phrases, you too can talk like a real skier. D I N setting: an important term that you should know especially if doing a demo day or checking your bindings. It is the number in the window on the binding that the binding is set to that determines the release of the boot when un-normal pressure is applied. This needs to be set by a ski tech because the number comes from a complicated formula that includes skier s age, weight, height, ability, and boot sole length. Boot sole length: another number you should remember, again especially if doing a demo day. It is the length of your ski boot sole (the part that goes in the binding) stamped on the side of the heel of the boot. It is a 3 digit number in millimeters like 296, or 305, depending on the size of the boot. Although two boots the same foot size (also expressed metrically like 27.5 (which is 9 &1/2) may not have the same boot sole length, close maybe, but could affect the release of the binding if not properly adjusted. Underfoot: refers to the ski width under the binding. Skis are listed with three widths, most times printed on the ski, tip, mid (the underfoot one) and tail measurements in millimeters, like 125-85-106. When underfoot is being talked about it gives the general idea of how wide a ski is in total and how much float it would have in powder or soft snow. A 75 mm underfoot is a fairly narrow ski that would turn more quickly, whereas a 115 mm underfoot is a wide ski, probably built for powder. In the east here, skis from 70 to 90 mm are more the norm. Ski length: a measurement of the length of the ski in centimeters, like 155cm. The average length of a ski should be to about your nose, higher or lower depending on type of skier or type of ski. Mathematically you can take your height in inches and multiply by 2.53 to get an approximate ski length Turn radius: an informative number that can tell you how quick a ski should turn. A number, expressed in meters, that if the ski was to make a complete circle using its side cut would be the radius of that circle. Many skis have it printed on the ski as R-15 or radius 15. The smaller the number the tighter the circle or turn. So a ski with a 13 meter turn radius should turn quicker that a ski with a 22 meter radius. Average skier slalom turn radius is from 14 to 17 meters. 18-25 is more a giant slalom, and powder skis can go to 40 meters. Ski make and model: Skis, like cars, come in many types. When talking it is good to know the model ski you are on as well as the make. MMM, I drive a Chevy. OK, Corvette or Malibu, big difference. This is more important when talking more high end or high performance skis. Hope this helps some. 4
