FISH BITES The Marlins rap up a three-game series at Tampa Bay today to conclude the 2018 Citrus Series. Trevor Richards is making his 14th start of the season, and is 0-2 with a 10.66 ERA in Interleague play, including a no-decision vs. Tampa Bay on July 3 (5.0 ip, 9 h, 4 er, 0 bb, 5 k). Following today's game, Miami will return home to face Atlanta in a two-game series on Monday-Tuesday, and conclude the homestand with a four-game set against the Nationals (Thursday-Sunday). The homestand will begin a stretch of 13 straight games against NL East opponents. In fact, Miami plays 44 of their remaining 62 games (71%) against their division foes. SWEEPING FEELING The Marlins are looking to complete their first series sweep of the season. This series marks the sixth time this season Miami has won the first two games of a three-game set (dropped the finale in the previous five). Are looking to sweep the Rays in a series of at least three games for the first time since May 18-20, 2007 at Tropicana Field. LAST NIGHT'S RECAP The Marlins won their fourth straight game with a 3-2 win at Tropicana Field. Pablo López allowed just one run (on a solo HR) on three hits in 6.0 innings pitched (1 bb, 6 k). DH Martín Prado went 2x4, recording the Marlins' lone multi-hit effort in the game. CF Cameron Maybin hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh. Kyle Barraclough struck out two batters for his 10th save of the season. GROWTH POTENTIAL Miami has shown month-over-month improvement in nearly every offensive category in 2018, highlighted by batting average and runs-per-game. The Marlins are one of two teams (also Colorado) in the Majors this season to increase their batting average each month. The last time the Marlins increased their monthly avg. each month through July was in 2005. Prior to this season, the Marlins had never increased their month-over-month runs per game through July, and they are one of three teams to do so this season: also Cincinnati and Colorado. VS. THE RAYS Miami leads the 2018 Citrus Series, 4-1, securing the season series win for the third time in the last four years. Miami dropped the 2017 Citrus Series, 1-3, with the only win coming on May 3 at the Trop. The Citrus Series is the closest of the seven natural Interleague rivalries (see series notes at right). Of the 112 games played in this series all-time, exactly half (50%) have been decided by two-runs-or-less (35, 1-run; 21, 2-run). When Miami scores first, they have gone 38-17 (.691), and when the Rays score first, they are 39-18 (.684). Miami is 25-29 in St. Petersburg. - Stats LLC UP NEXT...THE BRAVES The Marlins are 2-5 vs. the Braves this season. Dropped the 2017 season series, 8-11, despite winning the series in Miami, 5-4. It marked just their third home season series win over Atlanta since 2010. The Marlins trail the overall series, 176-245, including a 20-38 mark at Marlins Park. MAYBIN MANIA Cameron Maybin has hit safely in 13 of his last 17 games since June 29, batting.321 (17x53) with three home runs over the stretch. He has homered in two of his last three games after collecting just one home run over his first 88 games of the year. FLIPPING THE Since June 5, the Marlins have gone 23-18, and have won nine of 13 series in that span, including consecutive series wins against then-first-place Milwaukee and Philadelphia to end the first half. Only the Dodgers (25) and Cubs (24) have more wins among NL teams over the stretch. Miami opened the season 20-39, and dropped a season-high six straight games just prior to this current stretch. The Marlins have won four straight games, matching their season-high winning streak (also April 28-May 1). Have won seven of their last nine games and 11 of 18. Are looking to record a five-game winning streak for the first time since winning seven in-a-row from April 24-30, 2016. Miami is 10-8 on the road since June 5 after beginning the season 10-21 away from Marlins Park. Miami is batting a Major League-best.280 on the road over the current stretch. LET THE CONVERSATION START In his final game before the break, Brian Anderson recorded his sixth three-hit game of the season to run his season hit total to 109. His hit total prior to the break tied Rocco Baldelli for the second-most by a Major League rookie since 2003, behind only Hideki Matsui (114 in 2003). He is the only Marlins rookie in franchise history to record 100+ hits prior to the break. Anderson recorded 101 hits over his first 92 games of the season, becoming the 142nd rookie since 1958 to record 100+ hits in 92-or-fewer games. Of those, 34 went on to win Rookie of the Year honors, including most recently Aaron Judge (2017), Corey Seager (2016), Carlos Correa (2015), José Abreu (2014), Mike Trout (2012) and Buster Posey (2010).- Stats LLC He leads all MLB rookies in at-bats (386), hits (109), runs (56), and RBI (49); ranks second in doubles (23), walks (38) and on-base percentage (.359), is third in slugging percentage (.420), tied for third in triples (3) and fourth in average (.288). HEATING UP WITH SUMMER Since May 28, Miami's offense has hit at a.261 clip (443x1695) with 210 runs scored. The 443 hits rank as the fourth-most among Major League clubs in that time, behind the Cubs (463), Red Sox (450) and Rockies (449). The Marlins average in that time ranks fourth in the NL, behind the Rockies (.285), Reds (.281) and Cubs (.275), and seventh overall in the Majors. INTERLEAGUE NOTABLES The Marlins' 191 Interleague wins all time are the second-most all-time among National League clubs behind only Washington (195), and they have the fourth-best winning percentage (.500; 191-191), behind St. Louis (.507; 177-172), the Mets (.505; 190-186), and the Cubs (.504; 175-172). Miami's offense is the all-time leader among NL clubs in Interleague runs (1,758), hits (3,465), and doubles (688). CLOSE CALLS The Marlins are now 13-12 in one-run games this season, having won their last four such games and eight of their last 11.
