game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Monday, May 7 Werner Park Papillion, NE THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes continue an eightgame road trip tonight with the finale of a four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers. After losing each of their first nine road games of the season, the Cakes have won five of the last six to return to the.500 mark for the first time since April 12 (4-4). YESTERDAY S NEWS JT Riddle had three hits and drove in two runs to back 7.0 strong innings from Trevor Richards as the Baby Cakes won defeated Omaha, 5-2. Riddle got the Cakes on the board with an RBI single in the fourth to cash in Eric Campbell s one-out double. Riddle moved to third on a single by Tomas Telis and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Wallach, and Austin Dean added an RBI single to cap the three-run rally. Riddle s two-run single in the fifth pushed the New Orleans lead to 5-0. Richards struck out four without issuing a walk and had retired 12 in a row until Jack Lopez doubled in the fifth and scored on a two-out double by Parker Morin. Frank Schwindel homered in the seventh to draw the Storm Chasers within 5-2, but Severino Gonzalez turned in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to pick up his third save. ON THE HILL Dillon Peters gets the call for his Triple-A debut. The left-hander went 7-3 with a 1.57 ERA in the minors last year to earn a September promotion to Miami, then opened 2018 in the Marlins starting rotation. In six games (five starts), Peters was 2-2 with a 6.31 ERA before being optioned to New Orleans last Wednesday. He brings a streak of 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings in the minor leagues into tonight s start, dating back to last August 13 vs. Mississippi while with AA Jacksonville. FOR STARTERS Baby Cakes starting pitchers have given up only 26 earned runs in 111.1 innings (2.10 ERA) over the last 18 games and opponents are hitting.193 (80x415). NOLA starters have worked at new orleans baby cakes (15-15) at Omaha Storm chasers (11-19) LHP Dillon Peters (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Scott Barlow (1-0, 0.75) On This Date... least 7.0 innings in seven consecutive games after doing so just once in the season s first 23 games, charting a 1.61 ERA (9 ER/50.1 IP) over that span. The Cakes improved to 10-2 when receiving a quality start. HIT PARADE New Orleans reached double-digit hits for the third straight game, and has outhit Omaha 43-16 in the series. The Cakes are hitting.364 (43x118) in the three games, after entering the weekend with a PCL-worst.225 team batting average. DOMINANT DEBUTS Dillon Peters is the fourth Baby Cakes starting pitcher to make his Triple-A debut over the first month of the season, joining Sandy Alcantara (April 7 vs. Nashville), Ben Meyer (April 8 vs. Nashville) and Trevor Richards (May 1 vs. Round Rock). In the other three starts, the debuting hurlers combined to allow three runs in 17.0 IP (1.59 ERA) with 22 strikeouts, five walks and a.177 (11x62) average. 2014: Iowa s Chris Rusin pitches the second no-hitter in Zephyr Field history, blanking New Orleans 3-0. The only three baserunners were two walks to Josh Rodriguez and a catcher s interference. Center fielder Matt Szczur s running catch on a shallow fly ball by Rodriguez preserves the final out. GOLDEN GOPHER Right-hander Ben Meyer was honoured today as the PCL s Pitcher of the Week, after going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (3 ER/14.0 IP) in a pair of starts. Meyer gave up just five total hits, limiting opponents to a.109 average (5x46) to lower his league-leading batting average against to.172 (21x172). He also leads the PCL in WHIP (0.84) and ranks fourth in ERA (2.10). The University of Minnesota alum had finished 7.0 innings in two of his 26 career starts before doing so in both outings last week. Meyer is the first New Orleans pitcher to win the weekly honor since last July 3-9, when Justin Nicolino captured the award. LEGION OF BROOM The Baby Cakes are in search of their sweep of a series of more than two games since taking four straight in Las Vegas from August 12-15, 2016. The Cakes then dropped their next game in Salt Lake before embarking on the club s most recent five-game winning streak from August 17-21. New Orleans has not swept a series of at least three games in Omaha since taking five straight at Rosenblatt Stadium, May 19-22, 1997. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean has gone 9x26 with seven walks and six RBI in his first eight Triple-A games. Dean was hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games with AA Jacksonville and was honored as the Southern League s Player of the Month for April after pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.120). Dean s 43 hits overall are tied for third-most in the minors, two behind Salt Lake s David Fletcher, and his.402 batting average (43x107) is tied for fifth in MiLB (Fresno s J.D. Davis,.425). Dean also ranks ninth with a.471 on-base percentage. HOT SOUP Eric Campbell extended his hitting streak to nine games, the longest by a Baby Cake this season. Campbell is batting.417 (15x36) during the streak, and has picked up 13 RBI in his last 16 games. The last NOLA player to hit in 10 straight games was JT Riddle from August 20-31, 2016. JUMBO-LAYA Jumbo Diaz has converted each of his four save chances, putting him tied for seventh place in the PCL, while the rest of the Cakes bullpen has gone 3x9. Diaz has surrendered one hit in 17 at-bats (.059) with runners in scoring position. RIDDLE ME THIS JT Riddle recorded three hits for the fourth time in five starts since joining the Baby Cakes. In six games overall, he is hitting.500 (12x24) with six runs, three doubles, one triple, one home run and nine RBI. Riddle joined the Baby Cakes on a Major League rehab assignment. Riddle began last season with New Orleans and hit.286 in 16 games before making his MLB debut with the Marlins, batting.250 in 70 games. He has now hit safely in all six career games vs. Omaha, going 12x27 (.444) with nine RBI. RISPY BUSINESS The Baby Cakes have gone 16x37 (.432) with runners in scoring position in the series to move out of the league basement, as their.253 (70x277) with RISP on the year is 12th. NOLA ranked last in the league in each of the last two years, batting.250 with RISP in 2017, and.257 in 2016. ROSTER MOVES Scott Van Slyke has been placed on the disabled list and Cito Culver has rejoined the Baby Cakes after a two-game stint with AA Jacksonville, where he went 3x5 with three RBI. After appearing on his first Opening Day roster with the Marlins, Peters went 2-2 with a 6.31 ERA (18 ER/25.2 IP) in six games, including five starts. He was optioned to New Orleans on 5/3. SHOOTING BLANKS In his season debut on 4/1, Peters shut out the Cubs on six hits for 6.0 innings. It marked his third career scoreless start, including a 5.2-inning performance against Atlanta in final start of 2017, giving him 11.2 consecutive innings without allowing a run. NOT SO GRAND Peters saw his scoreless streak end on 4/7 at Philadelphia, when he surrendered nine runs in 2.2 innings. He served up two grand slams, becoming the first pitcher in Marlins history to do so in the same game, and the first MLB hurler to do so since Mike Fiers in 2015. BOUNCING BACK Peters rebounded to win his 4/13 outing vs. Pittsburgh, turning in a quality start by limiting the Pirates to two runs and four hits over 6.0 innings and lowering his home ERA to 1.50. 2017 in review THUMBS UP Overcoming a broken left thumb which sidelined him for three months, Peters went 7-3 with a 1.57 ERA (11 ER/63.0 IP) in 13 minor league starts to earn his first MLB promotion in September. STARTING FAST Peters opened the year with AA Jacksonville, where he allowed two runs on six hits across 11.1 innings in his first two starts, both wins. He then suffered a fractured thumb when he was hit by a line drive on 4/17 vs. Pensacola. ON THE MEND In four rehab starts, Peters allowed just one earned run (three total) over 17.1 innings and rejoined the Jacksonville rotation on 7/27, tossing 5.0 frames of one-run ball at Mississippi. DOG DAYS Over his final six starts with the Jumbo Shrimp, Peters pitched to a 1.87 ERA (7 ER/33.2 IP) while limiting Southern League opponents to a.200 batting average (33x165), including just two hits in 34 at-bats (.059) for left-handers. He held the opposition scoreless over his final 13/2 innings. DAZZLING DEBUT The Marlins selected his contract on 9/1 and Peters made his big league debut that night vs. Philadelphia, spinning 7.0 shutout innings of three-hit ball with eight strikeouts in a no-decision. Peters tied the club record for innings pitched in a big league debut, joining Justin Nicolino (6/20/15) and Brad Penny (4/7/00), and for strikeouts in a debut, joining Jose Fernandez (4/7/13). WINNER WINNER Peters picked up his first Major League victory in his season finale on 9/28 vs. Atlanta, yielding two hits in 5.2 scoreless frames.
