HOW SWEEP IT WAS: The Padres completed the three-game sweep of the Cubs on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory, the first series-sweep of the season and their first over the Cubs since August 6-8, 2012 in San Diego...the Cubs had won five consecutive games at Petco Park dating back to May 20, 2015 Entering the series on Monday, the Padres had a Major League-high 33 losses...per ELIAS, it was the first time in 44 years that this late in a season in terms of games played the team with the most losses in the Majors proceeded to sweep a series of at least three games from the defending World Series champion...that had last been done in 1973, when the Rangers took three games from the Athletics, after Texas began the series with an MLB-high 91 losses. The Padres have now won four consecutive games, their longest winning streak since they won five straight from August 17-22, 2015. WHAT A RELIEF: LHP Brad Hand and RHP Brandon Maurer each tossed scoreless and hitless outings on Wednesday, marking the fifth consecutive game that Padres relievers have tossed scoreless frames...the Padres bullpen has now strung together 17.2-scoreless innings, the longest active scoreless innings streak among all Major League bullpens. Over the last five games, opponents are 1-for-53 (.019 average) against the Padres bullpen...per ELIAS, it s the first time in almost a year that a team had a five-game span in which its relief corps allowed no more than one hit...oakland s relievers limited opponents to one hit in 38 at-bats over five games in June 2016. The Padres have now won 97 consecutive home games when they have led entering the ninth inning dating back to July 2014...the longest active streak in MLB (ELIAS). Since 5/23, the Padres bullpen is 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA (7 ER, 37.1 IP) while converting all five of their save opportunities...the four wins are tied with the Blue Jays for the most in the Majors and the four saves rank tied for first with the Blue Jays and Rays...the 37.1 innings pitched are tied with the Phillies for the second-most since 5/23, behind only the Dodgers 39.2 IP, and the 1.69 ERA ranks fourh. RUNS EQUAL WINS: Per STATS Inc., when scoring at least four runs this season, the Padres have the second-highest winning percentage in all of MLB at.864 (19-3), behind only the Houston Astros (.882, 30-4).
