Wood's RBI single in the fourth was his first hit since August 21, 2016 at COL, and it his first RBI since May 18 of last season at MIL. STRIKEOUT MACHINE: Tonight's starter, RHP Dinelson Lamet (Dee-NEL-son luh-met) has strikeouts per nine innings pitched (with at least 10 games started)...the mark ranks second in the NL, behind only WSH Max Scherzer's and sixth in the Majors. HOME (AND ROAD) IMPROVEMENT: Entering the All-Star break, the Padres'.227 collective batting average ranked last in the league, but since the All-Star game, the Friars have the most hits in the Majors (149), most triples (eight), second-most RBI (80), and the secondmost runs scored (83)...the club has hit.283 following the break, which is the sixth highest average in the NL...the Pirates'.285 mark ranks fifth in the NL. IN A SAFE HAND: With his sixth save of the season last night, LHP Brad Hand has four saves in four consecutive save opportunities, tying CHC Wade Davis for the longest active save streak in the Majors...Hand has three saves in the last three team games, and if he gets the save tonight, he'll become the first Padre since Craig Kimbrel (who saved five straight in July 2015) to log four saves in four team games...the only pitcher to do so this season is SEA Edwin Diaz, following the All-Star Break (ELIAS). With a 19.1 inning scoreless streak, Hand has the third-longest active scoreless streak in the Majors, trailing PHI Lucas Garcia's 20.1 and BOS Chris Sale's Hand's scoreless streak is the longest by a Padres reliever since Fernando Rodney pitched 22.0 consecutive scoreless innings in FORTNIGHT FRONTRUNNER: INF Cory Spangenberg has 17 hits, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored in the past two weeks since July 15...he is only one of four NL players to have 10-ormore hits, RBI and runs over the last two weeks, per STATS...he has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games, hitting.354 with two triples, three homers and 11 RBI. COMING IN CLUTCH: In their last nine games, the Padres bullpen's 1.89 ERA (7 ER, 33.1 IP), is the best in the National League and third-lowest in the Majors...opposing hitters are batting only.157 against Padres relief arms. RAMPANT RENFROE: OF Hunter Renfroe is the only Major League rookie this season to have 20-or-more home runs and doubles (he has 20 homers and 21 doubles)...his 20 home runs are tied for third-most among rookies with CWS Matt Davidson, behind LAD Cody Bellinger's 28 and NYY Aaron Judge's 33...his 21 doubles lead all National League rookies and rank second-most in the Majors, behind HOU Yuli Gurriel's 27. Renfroe enters tonight's game having had five extra-base hits in his past four games (three homers and two doubles). RISP-ECT: Since the All-Star break, the Padres have hit.317 (39-for-123) with RISP, with eight doubles, three triples, and six HR...it is the fourth-highest average in the ML. TOUGH WITH TWO DOWN: The Padres'.207 average and 118 RBI with two outs are the lowest marks in the Majors this season. PADRES ON DECK: After hitting his 11th triple and 13th home run of the season for Triple-A El Paso last night, OF Franchy Cordero looks to top the Padres minor league record of 16 triples that he set last season. Rehabbing INF Yangervis Solarte went 2-for-5 with two RBI, playing the entire game at shortstop for El Paso. LHP Joey Lucchesi allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work in Double-A San Antonio s 4-1 loss at Frisco. RHP Emmanuel Clase allowed one hit with six strikeouts in the AZ Rookie League. CF Jeisson Rosario went 3-for-4 in Arizona with a home run. DATES IN PADRES HISTORY: On July 29, 2007, while Tony Gwynn delivered his induction speech at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Padres scored 11 runs in the first inning of an win over Houston. On July 30, 1984, LHP Dave Dravecky pitched the ninth one-hitter in Padres history, shutting out the Dodgers on one-hit with four strikeouts in a complete-game, 12-0 win at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. 2 #64 - DINELSON LAMET - RHP ON YOUR MARK, LAMET, GO: RHP Dinelson Lamet (Dee-NEL-son luh-met) is set to make his 11th career start tonight, fifth at home, against the Pittsburgh Pirates Earned the win an improved to 4-4 in his last start on 7/23 at SF, working 6.2 innings of two-run ball, striking out six and walking one in the Padres' 5-2 victory. Has allowed three earned runs or less in six of his 10 starts this season, posting a 2.52 ERA (10 ER, 35.2 IP) in those outings...24 of his 32 earned runs have come in his other four outings, posting a ERA (24 ER, 16.0 IP) in those four starts. Posted three consecutive quality starts from 6/17-29, going 1-0 with a 2.37 ERA (5 ER, 19.0 IP) with a 25-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio while limiting the opposition to a.159 (11-for-69) average. STRIKEOUT MACHINE: Struck out a career-high 12 batters in his start on 6/17 at MIL, the second-highest single-game total by a Padres rookie in franchise history, behind only Oliver Perez's 13 on 7/7/02 at COL. The 12 strikeouts match the highest single-game total by any rookie this season (also CIN Amir Garrett on 4/19/17 vs. BAL). Among pitchers with at least 10 games started, Lamet ranks sixth in the Majors with a strikeout per nine innings ratio and second in the National League, behind only WAS Max Scherzer (12.45). RARE COMPANY: Improved to 2-0 in his Petco Park debut on 5/30 vs. CHC, tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out eight in the Padres 6-2 victory. Per ELIAS, with his eight strikeouts, he became the first rookie since 2014 to fan eight batters in his first two MLB starts since NYY Masahiro Tanaka in 2014 he is the 13th rookie to accomplish the feat in the modern era (1900-present). DINELSON S DEBUT: Made his Major League debut on 5/25 against the New York Mets at Citi Field, tossing 5.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and striking out eight in the Padres 4-3 victory. Lamet became only the second player in franchise history to earn the win and strike out at least eight in their MLB debut...lhp Bob Shirley earned the win and struck out 11 in his 8.2 innings pitched on 4/10/77 at CIN.( ELIAS).
