From the President We are really coming to the pointy end of the season at a rate of knots with preparations well under way by all competitors for the Junior, Senior and Master States Competitions at in March as well as the Aussies in April in QLD and the Boaties travelling to NSW for the ASRL Championships this weekend. Congratulations to Justin, Meg, Jacqui, Brittany and Sally who have been selected to represent Western Australia in the U/23 Women s division of the Australian Surf Rowers League in NSW. The senior competitors are heading to Trigg this weekend for a full carnival including those boats not travelling interstate and our Juniors were there last weekend for their qualifying carnival. Well done to all our junior competitors who have qualified for events at the SLSWA Surf Life Saving Championships, a great achievement in itself. The logistics and manpower required for these events are huge for our club and I encourage all members not competing to help and contribute in some way, a few hours officiating or helping with setups and pack ups are always appreciated and go a long way to assisting our competitors and Area Coaches and Captains. Thank you to those who have been assisting up until now. It hasn t gone unnoticed. A reminder that our canteen will be open over both the Junior States weekend and the Senior States weekend with the assistance of our sponsor Kinky Swell. Coffee, fresh rolls and pastries, ice-creams and cold drinks will all be available from 6am-1pm on the Saturday and Sunday of those weekends, your support and patronage will be appreciated. Finally a reminder that we have a briefing from the MRA scheduled from 5.30pm on Monday 23 February in the club hall. This is an opportunity for members to find out first-hand how the redevelopment of the foreshore area will impact our club. Kieran Kinsella CEO of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority will be on hand to answer questions and give us information for our informed comment on the project. The City of Stirling have also been invited to address the proposed pool. I look forward to seeing members at the event. See you on the beach Elise Irwin
Great weekend of competition for our competing age groups, with beach events at Sorrento on Saturday and water event at Trigg on Sunday. All did extremely well with good numbers across all age groups qualifying for the State Titles in a few weeks time. A fairly big swell greeted us on Sunday morning at Trigg with a spinal and a few head clashes with boards in the U/14s arena. A permanent rip in the U/11s arena made for a interesting day of competition. It certainly sorted a few clubs out, but with our brave girls and boys getting out and amongst it. It did us all proud and at the end of the day saw some great results come our way. Now just have to fine tune a few areas to be ready for the States. We are sure to enjoy some well-earned results here as well. Rumour has it that on a paddle back to Scarboro on Sunday a certain age manger almost lost a toe to a vicious and errant nor west blowie, got to keep your legs up buddy and keep your toes out of the water. Dave Locke s surf swim training sessions is continuing on Tuesday evenings at 5.00 6.00pm and Saturday mornings 8.00 9.00am, with good numbers turning up, and Dave passing on some valuable information regarding competition and the best way to get an advantage over our rivals. This will continue up until States, and then we will possibly have a look at some pool rescue techniques, for the up and coming pool rescue season.
