Our best showing of the year began with sixty-two club members driving thirty-two sparkling Corvettes. Bob and Sue Matula once again rocked our vette world with a brand new 2013 60th Anniversary '427 Convertible. Congratulations guys it will be even more special in the future. After our great trip to Hot Springs, we began May with the scholarship presentations to students from Lake Career & Technical Center and the Eldon Career Center. Our PR officer Fred Mueller joined Vice President Gary Cooper and me in this annual event which is probably the most rewarding aspect of being the Club President. The genuineness and enthusiasm of the recipients provides some very positive feedback that there are young students who are going to make a positive contribution to the Automotive Field. The Eldon Career Center Director told me that our two recipients from last year are both doing very well in their studies at Texas Technical Institute where they are roommates who remain in contact with him. We hosted an advance team of three couples from the Quad Cities Corvette Club who were finalizing arrangements for their scheduled 50 Corvette visit to the lake from October 17-20, 2013. Many thanks to Mike Craig for giving a private showing at the Car Barn to the team and also to Steve & Connie Swanson, Gary & Linda Markus and Craig & Nancy Beach for joining us for breakfast at Port Arrowhead and dinner at Culpeepers. This team was a great group and are enthusiastic about a joint dinner during their October visit as well as a potential ride on the Celebration. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Springfield Cardinals game on the 7th, our first Hot Summer Nights next Friday the 10th and at Warm Springs Ranch on the 14th - otherwise on the 19th at Captain Ron's! Members are encouraged to watch the Clydesdale video sent out on email. It features a trainer modeled after John Soto, ranch manager, proud Vette owner & friend to LOCC. Museum Ambassador, Denny Pennington: The Museum continues to accept donations and memberships in their campaign to complete the race track and grounds. Cones or other objects used to save places will be confiscated by the police. In order to be near your friends it will be best to travel together and arrive early. Public relations: Fred Mueller: Fred is out of town, but Don Sturn reminded members that all media submissions must be timely to be included in local newspapers. Old Business Don thanked those who participated in the St. Patrick s Day Parade. The day was chilly, but LOCC was represented by 22 Vettes gaily decorated for the occasion. The Club was awarded third place in the Civic Group category. Earlier in the month Don forwarded an email inquiry from another Missouri Vette club regarding a possible road trip to the St Jude s Children s Hospital in Memphis. Only two members expressed interest; Don would talk with them after the meeting. 4/20 Dogwood Parade. Contact Bill Dotson if interested The following events are scheduled before the next meeting: 5/3-5 Magic Dragon Car Show on the Strip 5/4 Capitol City Corvette Show in Jefferson City 5/10 Hot Summer Nights begins 5/14 Warm Springs Ranch trip 5/18 Oma-Noma Festival at the dam. One Corvette from each decade is needed. The Craigs will start with their beautiful 1955. A sign up sheet was available at the meeting. Don asked members to please sign up to fill the quota or direct calls would be made as this is an excellent opportunity to highlight the Club and participate in a community event. 10/17-20 The Quad Cities Corvette Club has 35 Vettes, more are possible, signed up for their trip to the Lake. They are looking for help in providing an all day scenic road trip from 9am to 3pm. including a lunch stop. Also, they would like to find a restaurant where we could have a joint evening dinner. Those interested in forming a working group were to meet with Don at the end of the meeting. New Business 5/7 Youth Day at the Springfield Ball Park. They would like to have us there on this date for an 11:00 game. Once again, we would parade around the infield prior to the opening pitch. There was some discussion about sitting in the reserved area where food is provided or sitting in regular seats and ordering our own food with no final decision made. A lot is happening in May, but it was decided not to go on a later date because people get busy with family and friends during the summer months. A sign-up sheet was provided as a firm count is needed prior to ordering tickets. Don will send an email later in the week with specifics. Secretary's Report continued on page 3. Sunday, April 14, 2013 The April LOCC Meeting was held on the 14th at Port Arrowhead Resort in Lake Ozark. What a turn out! The weather was beautiful and the parking lot was in bloom with color ~ displaying all the various makes and models of beautiful Corvettes. Once again Port Arrowhead provided us an enjoyable buffet, along with courteous wait staff who took care of us in their friendly style. Thank You! The fifty-fifty winner was Denny Pennington ~ so guess who's selling tickets at Captain Ron's? Congratulations Denny! Did you tell J.C. about this? Oops, she knows now! The next LOCC Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 19th at Captain Ron's in Sunrise Beach. Arrive at noon, buy your 50/50 tickets, order your meal and enjoy spending time with some of the best people at the lake. President Don will start the meeting around 1:00. See you there! April 18-21, 2013 Hot Springs Weekend ~ The trek down to the 15 th Annual Hot Springs Corvette Weekend began as a nasty dance with the rain gods as four once clean & beautiful vettes sloshed their way for almost seven hours through tons of wind and rain with more than a little bad visibility. Looking at the cars upon arrival, it did not bode well for competing with other show cars that had either been trailered in or simply never been exposed to the inclement weather. But club members checked into their hotels, picked up their registration packets and then had a spirited dinner together - enjoying the company of each other with the usual amount of tall tales and just plain lies about themselves and their various adventures in life. Friday morning saw the Rosenthals & Beaches head out on the Cannonball Run with Eric and Craig joining up with three other wannabe racers for some serious speed as they completely broke away from the other forty Cannonballers which made their respective wives happy they had worn dark slacks for the run! The Sturns & Markus's joined the more sedate scenic run of forty some vettes which was uneven at best but did actually see some very beautiful country. Upon returning from the runs, it was time to put some serious wash time in on the club's show entries. Several members later met on the veranda of the historic Arlington Hotel and watched the long parade of 175 sparkling Corvettes down Central Avenue. All members met up to walk to a local Latin American bistro where food and spirits were imbibed with gusto! 1 2 3 Saturday brought an early (6:30am) arrival at Summit arena where an estimated 175 entries were parked under the bright lights. Since the judging did not begin until 10am, club members joined others on their hands, knees and backs doing the final detailing necessary in this highly competitive show where the judging is keen.(for those interested, it is still possible to get a cold beer before 8am in Summit Arena!) When the judging and tabulating were done, it was an unprecedented win for LOCC as all four cars received a Finalist Award in their class including: 1-Eric & Sue Rosenthal in their gorgeous 2013 60 th Anniversary 427 Convertible 2-Don & Peggy Sturn for their beautiful 2012 Grand Sport Convertible 3-Gary & Linda Markus in their stunning black 2008 Z51 Coupe (who says black vettes cannot win??) 4-Craig & Nancy Beach in their 2005 Yellow Rocket perennial winner which has now turned over 80,000 miles! Jack & Yupin Rice drove down for the show and joined the club members for Happy Hour and another great meal at a local steakhouse where we toasted each other and all things Corvette especially the black ones! Cannot wait for next year! ~Don Sturn 4 Craig & Nancy Beach ~ Eric & Sue Rosenthal Don & Peggy Sturn ~ Gary & Linda Markus Peggy Sturn Pictures courtesy of : Craig & Nancy Beach and Don & Peggy Sturn. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 ~ Old Kinderhook First LOCC Ladies 'N Vettes Luncheon ~ Wednesday, May 1 st marked the first of hopefully many club outings for the Women Vette-Setters with Attitudes. The weather smiled on our group with sun and warm temps and the line of 12 gorgeous Corvettes with their hot cargo was a sight to behold! We had an impressive turn-out of 19 women at Old Kinderhook. Lunch was served on the Trophy Room patio and was the perfect setting for our first lunch together. The chef prepared a special chicken salad/fruit and cheese plate as an option just for our group in addition to anything on the Hook Café menu he did well, because every single one of us ordered it! Lunch was delicious, many toasted each other and our day with a bit of the vine and conversation flowed. After much debate over the feasibility of our front ends clearing the Evergreen driveway, several intrepid souls headed up it (and later down it) without any problems at all in search of treasures. The consensus was unanimous that we must do this again, so any venue/activity suggestions are welcome. Thank you to all who were able to participate for making it so special an event! ~Peggy Sturn Photos courtesy of Peggy Sturn & Connie Swanson May 2013 * Volume No. 13 * Issue No. 5 Page 7

SCHOLARSHIPS ~ On May 2, 2013, the Lake of the Ozark Corvette Club presented a scholarship at the Ninth Annual Student Recognition Ceremony hosted by the Lake Career and Technical Center in the R.C. Worthan Auditorium at Camdenton High School. The club presents an annual scholarship to a worthy student who will be furthering their career in the Automotive Field. Cooper Smith was the recipient for 2013 and was selected by the educational staff and faculty of the center. Pictured are LOCC President Don Sturn, Cooper Smith, PR Officer Fred Mueller and VP Gary Cooper The Lake of the Ozarks Corvette Club presented two scholarships to two students at the Eldon Career Center on May 3, 2013. The club continued their tradition of honoring two students who are continuing their education in the Automotive Field. Students apply for the scholarship and are selected by the faculty at the Career Center. This year's recipients were Payden Henson and Jordan Glynn. March 2013 In visiting with LOCC Member Jeff Warford, we learned of his trip to the Sebring International Raceway. We asked him to share his story. This is the second consecutive year I ve driven my 2009 Corvette to the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida to attend the Mobil 1; 12 hours of Sebring race to cheer on Corvette Racing. I left my home in Sunrise Beach at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday. March 12th and drove to my first motel just north of Atlanta, GA. On March 13 th I left my hotel at 4:00 a.m. so I could drive through Atlanta with less traffic. I arrived in Haines City, FL. (location of my hotel around 40 miles from the race track) around 3:00 p.m. on the 13 th. I met up with friends and Corvette owners from New Jersey that I met the previous year. On Thursday, March 14 th we drove to the racetrack and checked into the Corvette Corral. The Corral is located on turn 17 of the racetrack and provides parking and a place for approximately 300 Corvette owners to park their Corvettes. The Corral is run by Chevrolet. We had a private showing of the 2014 Corvette and guest speakers were: Tadge Juechter, Vehicle Chief Engineer; Harlan Charles, Product Marketing Manager; and Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing Program Manager. That evening at 7:00 p.m., 100 of the Corvette owners were allowed three parade laps around the race track. That was great! On Friday morning (March 15 th ), the Corral had a drawing for one lucky person to ride in a high speed lap around the racetrack in a 2013 ZR1 Corvette. The first raffle number was drawn, but no one claimed the number (had to be present to win). So they drew a second number and it was MINE! The lap was super fast and something I ll never forget. Later that morning around 11:00 a.m., I helped my friends (from New Jersey) during the Drivers Autograph Sessions at the Corvette Racing Garage. The line for driver autographs was over 200 people so I helped organize the lines. The people who had children with them were allowed to have the child come around and stand next to the drivers, which allowed the parents to get their children in the photograph with the driver(s). On Sat. March 16 th the race started at 10:30 a.m. and ended at 10:30 p.m., with Corvette Racing coming in first place. ~ Jeff Warford May 2013 * Volume No. 13 * Issue No. 5 Page 9
