FISH BITES The Marlins open a three-game series in San Francisco against the Giants tonight. Miami will hand the ball to lefty Caleb Smith tonight; he made his first career start against the Giants in his last outing, on June 13 at Marlins Park (ND, 6.1 ip, 8 h, 3 r, 3 er, 4 so). The Giants will counter with lefty Andrew Suárez, who was matched up with Smith for his first career start against the Marlins in the June 13 meeting (ND, 5.0 ip, 5 h, 2 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 3 so). The Marlins opened this 10-day, nine-game road trip in Baltimore (2-1) over the weekend, and finish it in Colorado (June 22-24) next weekend. YESTERDAY'S RECAP Miami couldn't complete a three-game sweep of the Orioles in Baltimore, suffering a 10-4 setback. Baltimore scored two runs each in innings 2-5 to put the game away. Justin Bour got Miami on the board with a solo home run in the fourth, and added a three-run shot in the sixth to account for all of the Marlins' runs. Bour notched just the second multi-homer game by a designated hitter in Marlins' history, joining Miguel Cabrera (June 16, 2007 at Kansas City, 2 HR). Starlin Castro added a two-hit effort, with two doubles, while Derek Dietrich led off and reached base four times (2x3, 2 bb). Merandy Gonzalez tossed 4.1 innings in relief, throwing 91 pitches, the third-most in a relief outing in Club history, behind Jason Vargas (101 on 7/8/06 at NYM) and Kevin Slowey (94 on 6/8/13 at NYM). TODAY'S TRANSACTION The Marlins today reinstated LHP Caleb Smith from the Bereavement List and optioned Merandy Gonzalez to Double-A Jacksonville. VS. SAN FRANCISCO The Marlins lead the season series, 3-1, after going 5-1 against the Giants in 2017; the 8-2 record is the club's best against any NL opponent since the start of 2017. Miami is 19-9 (.679) at AT&T Park since 2010, the best record in the Majors in that time (min. 10 GP), ahead of Pittsburgh (.600; 15-10). The all-time series is still in favor of San Francisco, however, 107-84. DOUBLE THE FUN Justin Bour recorded his fifth career multi-homer game (second this season) yesterday in Baltimore, just a day after J.T. Realmuto notched his fourth career multi-homer game (second this season). Bour's was the seventh multi-hr game by a Marlins' player this season. The seven such games are tied with Arizona and Colorado for the second-most in the National League, behind Washington (8). K-ALEB SMITH Caleb Smith rejoined the team from the Bereavement List today and will make tonight's start for Miami. His 83 strikeouts this season lead all Major League rookies, ahead of Tyler Mahle (68). Among starting pitchers, he also leads rookies in ERA (3.75), average against (.213), and is tied for the lead in wins (5). Only José Fernández (103 in 2013) had more strikeouts as a rookie before the All-Star break in Club history. STILL FINDING A WAY Despite going 0x7 over his last two games, Brian Anderson has extended his on-base streak to a career-best 15 games, tied with J.T. Realmuto for the longest streak on the team this season. It is the fourth-longest active streak in the NL entering play today, and is the second longest all season by a rookie, behind Jesse Winker (22 from April 10-May 6). - Stats LLC TEAM WORK Miami, led by Brian Anderson (34) and Justin Bour (33), have six players with 25+ RBI this season. That is tied with nine other clubs for the second-most players with 25+ RBI this year, behind Boston, Houston, the Dodgers, and the Yankees, who all have seven players. Lewis Brinson (27), J.T. Realmuto (26), Starlin Castro (25), and Derek Dietrich (25) are also on Miami's list, while Miguel Rojas is on the brink of joining, with 24 RBI. DON'T FEED THE BEAR Kyle Barraclough tossed a perfect ninth inning Friday night at Baltimore, extending his career-long scoreless streak to 15.2 innings over his last 16 appearances, and his career-long hitless streak to 8.2 innings over his last nine. Also from Stats LLC: Tied with Victor Arano (March 30-April 22) for the longest hitless streak by a reliever in the Majors this season. Tied with Yoshihisa Hirano for second-longest active scoreless streak among all NL pitchers, behind Jared Hughes (19.1). Tied with Justin Wayne (2004) for fourth-longest hitless streak by a reliever in Club history, behind Armando Benitez (14.1 in 2004 and 12.0 in 2004) and Ryan Webb (10.1 in 2013). LIFE ON THE ROAD Miami is 29 games into a stretch in which the club will play 25-of-35 games on the road between May 18 and June 24, the end of this road trip. The Marlins are currently 12-17 overall during the stretch, and 8-11 away from South Florida. By the end of the current road trip, Miami will have played 55.1 percent (43-of-78) of its games on the road, third most in the Majors. Only Tampa Bay (55.8; 43-of-77) and Baltimore (55.3; 42-of-76) will have played a higher percentage away from home by June 24. - Stats LLC Also by the end of this trip, Miami will have traveled 22,063 miles. Only Boston (22,803) and Seattle (22,336) will have traveled farther through June 24. - Stats LLC Miami wraps up its road schedule at NL West ball parks when it closes out this road trip at Colorado next weekend. Of the 10 Eastern division teams in either league, only Boston will finish its west coast trips faster, wrapping up in Seattle tomorrow. Philadelphia and Toronto (10 each) will have the most remaining after June 24, while Washington and Tampa (three each) will have the fewest. #KEEPINITREALMUTO Since coming back from the 10-day disabled list on April 17, J.T. Realmuto leads all Major League catchers in hits (60), runs (33), doubles (13), and slugging percentage (.533), is tied for the lead in triples (3), is second in average (.302) and on-base percentage (.362), and fifth in homers (9).
