A A A B : ; < = >? ; > =? ; @ @ B : C D 9 : ; < = >? ; > =? ; @ @ Saturday, April 15 Werner Park Papillion, NE THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes continue their first road trip of the 2017 campaign tonight with the first of a three-game set against the Omaha Storm Chasers. New Orleans took 10 of the 16 meetings last year against Omaha including five of eight at Werner Park. New Orleans and Omaha have met 390 times with Omaha holding a slight advantage 193-197. The Cakes and Chasers are scheduled to meet just thirteen times this season after playing each other 16 times over the last 14 seasons. YESTERDAY S NEWS Scott Copeland needed just 63 pitches and faced the minimum through seven innings and combined with Hunter Cervenka and Brandon Cunniff to no hit the Iowa Cubs in a 11-1 victory. Matt Juengel had three hits including a second inning three run home run to open the scoring. The Cakes led 4-0 when the offense batted around in the eighth scoring a season high seven runs in the frame. Matt den Dekker drilled a three run home run and Peter Mooney added three RBI in the win. Brandon Barnes scored three runs and belted a pair of doubles. The I-Cubs worked a pair of walks and the Cakes defense faltered in the eighth with two errors and an unearned run scored for Iowa. The Cakes won book-ends of the series taking game one and four. ON THE HILL Odrisamer Despaigne takes the ball for the first time, coming off the disabled list. After suffering an oblique strain early in spring training, the Marlins placed Despaigne on the 10-day disabled list. He made a rehab start with Class A Jupiter on 4/10 and spun 4.0 no-hit innings with seven strikeouts, then was activated the following day and optioned to New Orleans. Last season he made three stops Baltimore for 16 games (0-2, 5.60 ERA), AAA Norfolk for 18 games, 17 starts (1-9, 3.87) and after the Marlins claimed him on waivers in September made three relief appearances for the Miami (0-0, 9.00) THE SKIPPER Arnie Beyeler returns to New Orleans for his second season at the helm. Entering his 14th season as a minor league manager, during which he has gone 872-827 (.513), Beyeler is 229-196 (.539) in three seasons at the Triple-A level, including an International League crown with Pawtucket in 2012. He spent the last previous three years as the first base coach and outfield instructor for the Boston Red Sox, with whom he won the World Series in 2013. Last year, he guided NOLA from a deficit of nine games below.500 on June 1 to get back above the breakeven mark in August, the second-largest such deficit in team history. PLAYING FROM BEHIND Opponents have scored in the first inning in six of nine games, outscoring the Baby Cakes 9-0 in the opening frame. Across the first three innings, New Orleans has been outscored a combined 22-7. UNDER THE HOOD After starting the season 2x15 through his first three games with seven strikeouts, Destin Hood has gone 10x20 over the last five games and is riding a six-game hit streak, the longest by a Baby Cake this season. Hood had 19 RBI and three home runs season against Storm Chasers pitching. RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Luke Farrell (1-0, 5.06)! " # $ % & ' '' 2000: Lance Berkman goes deep three times and drives in seven runs in a 14-9 win at Las Vegas. All three homers were two-run shots - in the first, fifth and sixth innings - and Berkman added an RBI single in the ninth. A NO-NO - The Cakes fired their third no-hitter in team history last night and first combined no hitter. Of the 146 no hitters in league history it s only the third time in the PCL that three pitchers accomplished the feat. Brian Powell of New Orleans no-hit the Omaha Golden Spikes in 2001 and Scott Taylor no-hit Buffalo in 1994. The last time New Orleans got no-hit was by Chris Rusin and the Iowa Cubs in 2014. BUSTING OUT- The Cakes offense scored double digit runs last night for the first time this season, the club did it three times in 2016. The Cakes have scored 44 runs, seventh highest in the league. OPENING TRENDS New Orleans has lost at least six of its first eight games for the third time in the franchise s 25-year history. The 2000 club began 2-6, and the 2014 team opened 1-7. RISPY The Baby Cakes went 6x8 with runners in scoring position yesterday. The team had been 8x52 (.154) over the previous five contests. NOLA ranks 11th in the league with a.248 average with RISP after finishing last in the PCL with a.257 mark last year. STRANDED The Cakes drew a season high seven walks but stranded 8 baserunners. The Cakes have left 77 runners on base through eight games, most in the league.. DO NOT PASS GO Cakes catchers Tomas Telis and Ramon Cabrera have combined for six caught stealings in nine attempts, the best mark in the league. New Orleans catchers ranked sixth in the PCL last year by nabbing 30.9% of would-be basestealers (42x136). FOR STARTERS Through eight games, Baby Cakes starting pitchers own a 4.77 ERA (23 ER/43.1 IP) and Copeland s effort last night was the first to pitch beyond the fifth inning. STEAL AWAY The Cakes are second in the PCL with 12 stolen bases, trailing Salt Lake (15), and have been caught only once. Eight different players have accounted for the 11 steals; Salt Lake (7) is the only other team with at least five different players to record a stolen base. ROSTER MOVES The Cakes have added pitcher Odrismar Despaigne. He opened the season on the Marlins disabled list, made a rehab start in Jupiter and was optioned, he will start today s game in Omaha. Additionally, following Thursday night s 16-inning loss to the Mets, the Marlins optioned right-hander Nick Wittgren to New Orleans.
