Ponderosa UK Stud Blue Riband Tarbes Race 1 st Open 1 st SE Section Lou Severe of Chichester with Chris Delight How in no time at all our Blue Riband race was upon us. (it s a shame the weather hasn t caught up with the fact that it s now almost the end of June). For the Classic s most prestigious race 141 members sent 572 birds. As you know for Tarbes the London and South East Classic Club convoy our birds and the favour is returned for Bergerac. After waiting for conditions to improve on site the birds were liberated at 6.55am in to no wind but becoming a strong south westerly on their line of flight. We would like to thank Rube and Ian for all their help and for looking after the birds. 36 birds were verified on the winning day and congratulations must go to everyone who clocked. A fantastic achievement by Lou Severe timing 2 pigeons within 22 seconds and another one at 19.13.35 to also take 11 th Open. Tony Leggatt put in another top performance making Tarbes seem like a training race. Lee Patterson clocking 2 within 69 seconds taking 10 th and 12 th Open. Tony Barrett sending 2 pigeons and timing both 7.32pm and 7.59pm. Anner Smith, Phil Newton and Bill Morris must be commended on their great performances with a very Strong South Westerly wind timing in the North West Section. Anner flying 591 miles, Phil flying 578 miles and Bill flying 604 miles. In the South West Section we have 6 Salisbury Flying Club pigeons timed in the top 7 of the Section. The Tarbes Blue Riband goes to Lou Severe of Chichester winning 1 st & 2 nd Open 1 st & 2 nd South East Section. Lou is a retired lorry mechanic who for most of his working life worked for Parkers of Chichester. He has been married to Chris (hence the name of the winning pigeon) for 47 years and they have one daughter Jackie. Lou has kept pigeons for just over 50 years with a break early on of about 3-4 years. It began when Lou was roughly 14 years old and his next door neighbour was Dave Cave from Emsworth. Lou would pop round to Dave s to help with the birds and wait on race day. Dave became like a mentor for Lou. Lou has lived for 32 years in Chichester and races in the Bognor and Chichester Club. He started the season with 39 old birds which were raced to perches. The birds were then paired up for the Classic Tarbes and the NFC Tarbes races. This was their first round of eggs which they had been sat for a total of 14 days and they will now stay on eggs for the rest of the season. The corn fed is just a normal mixture.

He has about 20 young birds but doesn t breed them himself. Fanciers gift Lou youngsters for him to try and last season he bought in 10 young birds. The two winning hens both dropped together. First in the clock was a 3 year old chequer white flight which on the Sire s side is down from Bert Shepherds 2 nd Open Tarbes NFC and the Dam s side is through Lloyd & Kelly s Little Margaret 1 st Open Pau NFC. The second hen is a 5 year old chequer from Lou s own Janssen lines. Lou Severe. Runner up to Lou is Kevin King from Havant in 3 rd Open 3 rd South East Section. I would just like to start with congratulations to Lou Severe of Chichester on a fantastic performance 1 st & 2 nd Open. I ve been very lucky to have won Club and Fed races, a car & two Classics but timing a bird on the day from over 500 miles really is a great feeling. The bird was entered into Opportunity Lofts One Loft Race in 2010 by John and Kevin Zerafa of Portsmouth proving fanciers really do enter their best birds. I rang John to tell him and I have to say, he was as happy as I was, many thanks John. Thanks to Unikon for without my ETS clock I would not be able to race. Last but not least thanks to the CSCFC for giving us the opportunity to race 500 plus on the day of liberation. Kevin King.

4 th Open 1 st South West Section is Mark and Julie Gower of Fordingbridge. My 2 year old chequer is a widowhood hen and is bred from my CSCFC Dax winner LJB (who is half de-weerdt via Guy Reed) when paired to a direct De-weerdt hen (Gdt of Magnus & Joan). As a yearling she flew Messac & Saintes twice being my first bird from Saintes NFC however her ETS ring would not register. This year she has flown Carentan (club) & Messac with the CSCFC where she recorded 12 th Open, she was then worked around the loft with one 50 mile training toss. She came home in great condition and clapped around the loft before trapping. Congratulations to Lou Severe on his great double and to all the Salisbury lads who always put up fantastic results from this race. Mark Gower. Our 2010 Tarbes Blue Riband winners Nick and Christine Smith from Salisbury are 2 nd South West Section 5 th Open. We clocked our 2 year old pencil blue hen at 19.15 sitting 12 day old eggs. Her preparation was 2 x Seaton with the Wiltshire Fed, Carentan with the BBC and Fougeres with the NFC where she was 88 th Open. Her Sire is from my Fred Bloor family and her Dam is Deweerdt x Jan Aarden of Mark Gilbert origin. Nick and Christine Smith. Never far away from the top of a long distance race is Tony Leggatt from Havant 6 th Open 4 th South East Section. Congratulations to Lou and Chris Severe for 1 st and 2 nd from Tarbes. This year has been an unusual one for me so far, as I recently retired in April.

My pigeons took a back seat for a while as I lost use of my works van so training became difficult until I was able to get some new wheels!! Racing this year so far has been slow as I have only competed in the Classic races and a few club races, so for me to send such a large team of 15 birds to the race "Tarbes" was a calculated risk of which had paid off. I had 5 birds on the day and 5 the next morning and timed my first bird, that was 4 th Open CSCFC Bergerac last year and a classic double, whilst going about my garden chores. I would like to thank the complete Classic team for all of their hard work too. Good luck to you all for the remainder of the season. Tony Leggatt with Rebekah and Mitchell Leggatt. In 7 th Open 3 rd South West Section we have Stuart Jack from Tisbury, nr Salisbury. Stuart was our South West Section winner from Messac. All four pigeons sent to Tarbes were timed in. His first one is a 3 year old blue cock which so far this season has been 18 th Section 159 th Open NFC Fougeres and 44 th Section NFC Cholet. He only races cocks, all on widowhood and all four timed are the same way bred from Andy Parsons, Ken Hine and Alan Parker s Blue Gem Busschaert s families. The second pigeon has also been up there for him, taking 31 st Section NFC Cholet 2012, 10 th Section NFC Fougeres 2011 and 21 st Section NFC Nantes 2011. Stuart Jack.

8 th Open 6 th SE Section goes to Hamid Laakvand from Portsmouth with a 3 year old Blue Bar hen. I am a member of Parade IFC in Portsmouth and Solent South Rd Federation. I have not raced in the Classic for a few years so this is a good come back for me. This bird has only been sent across the channel to France a few times and she has never taken any major cards before. She was sitting for seven days at the time of basketing and was in very good condition. Her breeding is a Jan Aarden from Ponderosa UK blood line. She has now been named Jubliee to mark this occasion. I am very delighted with this result as I have never taken a good position like this before. Hamid Laakvand. 1 st North West Section 9 th Open flying 591 miles is Club Chairman Anner Smith from Wotton Under Edge. This 2 year old red hen is a Jan Aarden x Busschaert now known as Phoebe after our latest Grand daughter. She was sent to the race sitting 8 day eggs at basketing after being re-paired on 2 nd June to a stock cock due to loses early on. She has been a steady performer up until now. The Grand parents on the Sire s side being a red cock with 6 x 1 st s plus many other cards crossed with the Dam of my 2005 Pau Classic winner Margaret. On the Dam s side the Grand Sire is a gift bird from Stewart Luff of the Luff and Walker partnership being of Invincible Spirit lines x. Dam is a Steve Wright House of Aarden hen, a daughter of Jan Polders Bonte Beer. I would like to finish by congratulating the winner. Anner Smith.

Lee Patterson of Portsmouth 10 th & 12 th Open. My provisional 10 th open pigeon, GB10N39166, was having his fourth race of the year. He had previously flown 3 consecutive races taking 5 th club Carentan then flying Messac in the Club and Cholet in the NFC. He was my single nom for the Tarbes NFC race, run by Paul O Leary, but looked so well I decided he would have to go with the Classic instead. He also was 33 rd open CSCFC Bergerac Classic last year. In 2010 I gifted a nest pair of cocks bred the same way to my good friend Michael Moon. One cock won 1 st club Saintes and the other was 31 st open CSCFC Bergerac in 2011. In fact the Saintes winner was also timed in this Tarbes Classic at 19:50 and is provisionally 23 rd open. His Sire and Dam are both stock pigeons. The sire is a Jan Aarden and was bred by Robert O Jones of Resolven in Wales, being a direct son of his Thurso Cock twice 1 st club Thurso and 2 nd and 6 th section National on the day when paired to an inbred daughter of Patrick Bros Somerset Lad. The Dam is a direct daughter of 1 st and 2 nd Pau CSCFC 2007 for my good friends Tony Hounsell and Joey Hopkins and is a Cattrysse cross Busschaert. Unfortunately Joey is no longer with us. He was fancied to do well, being one of my two Classic Double birds, the second of which is provisional 12 th Open. I d like to take the opportunity of congratulating Lou Severe on taking 1 st and 2 nd open, all the section winners, especially Anner Smith for the outstanding performance of his bird in winning the NW section and all other members who timed on the day and to thank the CSCFC officials and marking team for all their hard work during the year. Lee Patterson s cock bird. Phil Newton from Weston Super Mare is having another cracking season. He wins the 2 nd North West Section position, timing in one of only 3 pigeons on the day in that Section with a very strong wind against them. This bird is a 2 year old blue cock flown on the natural system. He was a late bred in 2010 and hatched in July. He was not raced as a young bird but was trained to the coast after the racing season. He is well bred, being a Grandson of my Bergerac Classic winner on one side and a Great Grandson of my NFC Certificate of Merit winner on the other. He was sent to this race on a one day old youngster. Thanks to Tess for all her hard work on the birds.

Phil Newton. It is two seasons on the trot for Jack and Sally Baden of Swindon, who once again top the North East Section from Tarbes also taking the runners up spot as well. We started in pigeons in 1988 trying all of the methods. We now fly total widowhood with the exception of a few old hens which will be trained with the young birds for the OH Classic. Our birds are from families that have been with us for some years, then crossed into some good distance stock. My first pigeon is a blue chequer cock flown on widowhood and bred down from some superb Busschaert s from Colin Croucher (to whom we are forever grateful), of Young Vinnie lines and a Haelterman hen of Filmstar lines from Dave Kimber. Second bird is a blue cock, son of a Louella V.D.Wegan and a great granddaughter of Young Vinnie once again. Most of our good birds have this blood in them, they say good blood always comes through. Our third pigeon is a blue chequer, won 1 st Sect 16th Open in this section last year from Tarbes and is a Hartog/V Loon x Shy Lass Busschaert from D Vardy. Jack and Sally Baden.
