June 2016 Newsletter Introduction Hopes of fishing Kinkaid well into June are no more. As of June 2nd the water temperatures were reaching the mid 80 s by early evening. It s time to find your way up north to hunt muskies. The St. Clair outing and the Gil Hamm are two opportunities. See Future Events for details about these outings. Recent Events We had our Border wars tournament on May 21. This was the first outing where you did not need to dress like an Eskimo. The weather was perfect for both the Friday night get together and Saturday s tournament and awards dinner. Pomme had 16 members represent their club and we had 22. We want to thank our members that participated in this year s event and hope you will be able to make it to Pome de Terre with us next year. Shawnee won the tournament for the 7th year. Pomme has won 2 and there was 1 tie. We had 161 inches of muskies and Pomme had 67.5 inches. After taking in account the number of inches divided by the number anglers, we had 7.32 inches per angler and they had 4.22 inches per angler. Big fish went to Carrie Owens with a 38.5 inch muskie. The winning team of Jim Beaty, Kyle Beaty and Lenny Goldsmith. They caught 2 muskies of 37 inches and 26 inches. Next year it will be back to Lake Pomme De Terre. Look for date in next year s calendar and plan on attending this fun event. The meals at both Friday night and Saturday night were outstanding. Carrie Owens with her Pomme/Shawnee Challenge BIG Fish

Upcoming Events June 11 th we are will hold our Kids Fishing Day on Lake Murphysboro. There could be over a 100 kids at this year s event. We need volunteers from our club to make this a fun event for the kids in the community. Volunteers are needed from 8 to noon to set up the rods, sort out bait and other things needed to make this event a success. The Bunk house will be rented for our members to stay Friday night June 10 th. We are planning a club sponsored Boat and Float trip to Kinkaid on July 16 th. This event is in the planning stage so we will have more information in the July newsletter. See the email attachment for current details. Future Events Some of the big events that are coming up are: The Lake St Clair Trolling Outing which will be held July 29 th &30 th. Finns and Grins Charter will be the lead charter and Jason has treated us very well. We had openings for 18 spots. We have 17 people committed to go on the trip. This is one place where you can catch a fish of 50 inches or more. We have had more than 10 fifty-inch fish caught by our members on the past trips. Some things you need to bring with you for the 2-day outing. The first is an Ontario fishing license. If you do not have an Ontario Out Door Card, you will have to apply for that at the time you purchase your fishing license. The card is good for 3 years and cost $1. You can get it and license on line at the Ontario Dept. of Recourses (https://www2.on.wildlifelicense.com/start.php?lang=1). This year you will need another form of identification with you. Jason said any one of the following will work, driver s license or birth certificate or pass port. You do not need to get a Michigan fishing license unless you are going to fish on your own other than just the charter. They have changed the laws from previous years. If you are fishing on your own after or before the charter, you have to do the following: call every day to the Ontario Customs office to get a number to enter and fish Ontario waters, Ontario Fishing License and carry your pass port to get back into the US waters. This is just in case you get stopped by ether Canada or US border patrols. The fine could be $1000 or more. Contact Ken Ryder for more detail. The Chapter Challenge is being held on Lake of the Woods. Red Wing Lodge in Morson, Ontario is the host lodge for the event. We arrive on Saturday August 20 th and depart on the following Saturday, the 27 th. If you have never fished a challenge before, it is a lot of fun and another chance for a fifty-inch fish. Contact Jim Beaty if you have any questions or plan to attend. A $100 deposit will hold your spot for the challenge.

Tidbits The club, again, has a raffle going for a trip with Captain Jason Quantano of Fins and Grins Muskie Charters on Lake St. Clair. The trip is for either 2 anglers casting or a trolling trip for up to 6. It must be used on a weekday. The tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Contact Ol Snagger (Ken Ryder) (618-917- 1664) if you are interested. The drawing will occur during the banquet at the Fall Brawl. The Shawnee Muskie Hunters participates in escrip, a fundraising program where participating business partners contribute a percentage of your purchases to our club. If you are interested there is more information on our website here: http://www.shawneemuskiehunters.org/about-ourclub/escrip We still have Shawnee Muskie Hunter Challenge coins for sale. Contact John Wright if you would like one. His contact information is at the end of this letter. Trip Report This new section is devoted to summaries of fishing trips. We will eventually have a standard form to make submitting trip reports easy. Until then, if you d like to submit a trip report, send it to Dan Johnson (djohns16@gmail.com)

Joke of the Month If you have a good fishing joke you think the rest of the club would enjoy send them to Dan Johnson at djohns16@gmail.com. This month s joke was submitted by Kevin Williams.

Member Profile We don t have a member profile this month. If there s a member you d like to nominate for the member profile send a note to Dan Johnson (djohns16@gmail.com).
