game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Sunday, June 3 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA new orleans baby cakes (26-30) vs. memphis redbirds (35-22) RHP Sandy Alcantara (3-1, 3.43) vs. RHP Kevin Herget (3-4, 3.61) THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes conclude a five-game set today against the Memphis Redbirds, in search of their first series win since sweeping four games in Omaha from May 4-7. The Redbirds have won eight of the last 12 meetings at the Shrine and 13 of the last 21 overall across the last two seasons. YESTERDAY S NEWS Memphis erased a 5-0 deficit and defeated the Baby Cakes, 6-5 in 10 innings. New Orleans scored five times in the third inning, capitalizing on a pair of Redbirds errors and four walks. Tomas Telis broke the ice with a fielder s choice grounder, and Austin Nola drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. A wild pitch by Ryan Helsley allowed a run to score, and a throwing error by third baseman Ramon Urias made it 4-0 before Cito Culver s RBI single. A leadoff home run by Adolis Garcia in the fourth got Memphis on the board, but was the only blemish against Zac Gallen, who scattered four hits and four walks in 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts. Mike Kickham allowed three runs in the seventh, all coming with two outs. Tyler O Neill delivered a two-run single, and an error by Cristhian Adames extended the inning for Andrew Knizner, who came up with an RBI single. Another error an inning later put a runner in scoring position with two outs for Patrick Wisdom, whose double tied the game. The Redbirds used a bunt and a sacrifice fly to push across the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th, and Edward Mujica made quick work of the Baby Cakes in the bottom half. ON THE HILL Sandy Alcantara gets the nod for his 11th start of the season, the second straight Cakes starter to square off against his former organization. Alcantara spun 7.0 innings of one-run ball in a win at Iowa on Tuesday, and is 3-0 with a 3.15 ERA (12 ER/34.1 IP) over his last five outings. After issuing 16 walks in April, second-most in the PCL, Alcantara has walked five batters over his last five starts. Opponents are batting.236 against him, the fourth-lowest mark among PCL starters, including a.202 average (25x124) for right-handed hitters. In four starts at home, Alcantara owns a 1.85 ERA (5 ER/24.1 IP). HOME SWEET HOME Zac Gallen recorded his seventh quality start in 11 outings, and has turned in quality starts in nine of his last 13 dating back to last year. The home run surrendered to Adolis Garcia was the first run allowed at home this season, snapping a streak of 29.0 consecutive shutout frames. His home ERA now sits at 0.28 (1 ER/32.0 IP). HOT SOUP After snapping a 0x20 slump with a two-run homer on Thursday, Eric Campbell notched his eighth multi-rbi effort on Friday and drew three walks with a stolen base last night. Over his last 31 games, dating to April 26, Campbell is batting.360 (40x111), fourth-best in the PCL in that span, while his.460 on-base percentage trails only Sacramento s Austin Slater (.477). DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean reached base at least once for the 13th time in 14 home games since joining the Cakes on April 29 (0x3 with a sacrifice fly on May 13 vs. Omaha). Dean was hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games with AA Jacksonville and was named April s Southern League Player of the Month after pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.120). His.350 overall batting average places 19th in all of MiLB, and he is hitting.348 (16x46) in 12 games since moving into the leadoff spot. On This Date... 2005: New Orleans falls behind 5-0 after one inning at Omaha, but rallies for six runs in third and five more in the fourth en route to a 15-9 win over the Royals. Juan Melo goes 5-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and four runs scored and Brandon Watson has three hits and three RBI. ARMS RACE Over the last six games, Baby Cakes starting pitchers own a 1.46 ERA (6 ER/37.0 IP) and have five quality starts in that span, with only Dillon Peters falling one out shy of qualifying. The Cakes starters had a 2.25 ERA (45 ER/180.0 IP) in a 27-game stretch from April 18-May 17 before the staff held a 7.94 ERA in its next 10 games. SEIZE THE DAY The Baby Cakes are 6-8 in day games, hitting.250 (110x440) as a team, though the average drops to.229 when excluding the 16-0 win over Omaha on May 15. The pitching staff has a 3.09 ERA (40 ER/116.1 IP) under the sun. TOMAS THE TANK Tomas Telis has a hit in 15 of his last 19 games, batting.377 (26x69) with nine multi-hit efforts and 12 RBI. Since joining New Orleans on May 4, Telis ranks 14th in the PCL with a.333 average, with singles accounting for 32 of his 34 hits.. Dating back to May 23 last season, Telis owns a.343 batting average (86x251) over his last 65 games with New Orleans. STEAL AWAY The Baby Cakes have 44 stolen bases this season, tied for fifth-most in the PCL. Rafael Ortega is 10x10 in stolen base attempts, the most of any player in the league without being caught, and with Isaac Galloway (13) account for one of three sets of PCL teammates to reach double-digit steals, joining Colorado Springs Keon Broxton (16) and Nate Orf (10) and Tacoma s Ian Miller (14) and John Andreoli (12). NEXT OF KIN Tyler Kinley has yet to allow an earned run in eight relief appearances (9.2 IP) and has given up just two hits in 30 at-bats (.067). Kinley s save on Friday was his second at Triple-A, joining a save for New Orleans in Omaha on June 21, 2016. NOLA S NOLA Austin Nola has hit in 16 of his last 21 games, amassing a.319 batting average (22x69) with five doubles and 12 RBI. He is 11x28 in throwing out baserunners, a 39.3% rate which would tie for second among PCL catchers to Oklahoma City s Rocky Gale (45.8%) if he had enough games to qualify. LONELIEST NUMBER The Baby Cakes have played 20 one-run games, going a PCL-worst 6-14, and 31 games decided by one or two runs (11-20), tied for second-most in the league (Round Rock, 33). Both defeats in this series have come by one run, after NOLA had won its previous five one-run affairs at home, and the team has lost all 11 on the road. ROSTER MOVES The Marlins have purchased the contract of righthander Drew Rucinski, who pitched to a 1.42 ERA (2 ER/12.2 IP) in seven appearances in May. New Orleans has added left-hander Jose Quijada from AA Jacksonville, where he was 0-2 with a 2.42 ERA and four saves in five chances with the Jumbo Shrimp. NAWLINS NOTES The five-run third inning was the eighth time this season New Orleans has plated at least five runs in a frame, matching the total from all of last year... The Cakes drew nine walks last night to equal their season high (May 15 vs. Omaha)... Magneuris Sierra has collected a hit in each of his first four games against his former organization, going 5x16 with two doubles and a home run... Alcantara limited the Sounds to one hit in six at-bats with runners in scoring position. HIGH QUALITY Alcantara recorded his first quality start on 4/17 vs. Colorado Springs. He blanked the Sky Sox until two outs in the sixth inning, when a walk and consecutive singles scored a run to leave him with a no-decision. Right-handed hitters went 1x14 on the night. TREAT YO SELF Alcantara produced the only run of support during his 4/23 start vs. Oklahoma City with a fifth-inning double, his first career RBI after starting 1x17 at the plate. WINNER WINNER Despite allowing just one run in three of his first five starts, Alcantara did not break into the win column until 5/4 at Omaha, when he logged a season-high 7.0 innings and held the Storm Chasers to one run and four hits. The 7.0 IP matched his career best, established five other times. EIGHT IS GREAT For the first time in 76 career starts, Alcantara pitched into the eighth inning on 5/17 vs. Round Rock. In 8.0 IP, he allowed five hits, including a pair of solo homers, to pick up the win. 2017 IN REVIEW FAST RISER Alcantara made his MLB debut with the Cardinals after going 7-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 25 games (22) starts with AA Springfield. He finished 11th in the Texas League in strikeouts (106) and 12th in innings pitched (125.1) and his 15 hit batsmen were second-most in the league. San Francico s Tim Federowicz began Alcantara s big league career with a home run on his first batter faced on 9/3, but he recovered to fan Buster Posey for his first strikeout. WILD THING After blanking Frisco for 6.0 innings in his season debut on 4/7, Alcantara unleashed six wild pitches while allowing seven runs in 3.2 innings against the RoughRiders six days later. His 20 wild pitches on the year were the most in the Texas League. SECOND HALF SURGE Following the All-Star break, Alcantara went 4-0 with a 2.77 ERA (17 ER/ 55.1 IP) and limited opponents to a.222 batting average (45x203). Included was a three-appearance stint in the bullpen from 8/23-8/29 before having his contract purchased on 9/1. K MAN Alcantara twice fanned a season-high eight batters in a game, in a loss at Tulsa on 5/6 and a victory at Corpus Christi on 8/12. Four of Alcantara s eight major league outings were scoreless and he recorded a strikeout in seven, including striking out the side in order against the Cubs on 9/15.
