Junior Report Wednesday 3 October 2018 Opening day was washed out, so we started the following Saturday, the 15 th September. Thanks to all those that assisted with all the admin on the two Saturday mornings that we have had, Suzanna, Sarah and Sue plus others. Thump Sports and Kim were there, ably assisted by Stacey. Emphasised on the day that Thump Sports are our club sponsors, and we would appreciate our members supporting them in return. Rhett Purcell, who also went through our tennis programme for a number of years and is currently ranked number two in New Zealand, was introduced to the players. We had 23 (out of our 25 coaches that we have available) assisting a total of 174 junior players that attended that first morning. 63 in the 8.30am group, 77 in the 9.30am group and 34 in the 10.30am Blue/Silver/Gold group. The second week, 22 nd September, we had 161 junior players. 61 in the first group, 69 at 9.30 and then 31 in the last group. We have discussed getting more of the older players down at 10.30am and looking at reintroducing music to make it a bit more enticing. I want to acknowledge all the junior coaches, the parent coaches, club members who coach and assist on the courts, Jac and Luke and everyone else who assist, all who contribute towards our Saturday morning programme. Would not happen without them! Monday singles started 10 September with 21 in attendance, followed by 22 the following week and the final Monday of the term we had 14 who attended on quite a cold day. Thanks to Jay Mason for his assistance with this. Junior Interclub: It looks as though we will five or six B grade teams, and most likely one (possibly two) C Grade team. No A grade teams, as most have gone into Men s and Women s Interclub. Holiday Programme: 74 different junior players taking part this is a record number, with 45 on Day 1, 49 on Day 2, most likely 57 on Day 3 and between 29 and 37 for Day 4 attending. Really pleasing numbers, lots of younger members as well as starting members attending, and we also a small group for the last two days from Palmerston North taking part that bolstered numbers.

Saturday s restart on 27 October. Monday s will restart the first week back at school next term, although no Monday tennis on Labour day. Junior Club Singles Championships: Plan is to get these underway early to mid-november. I have 58 entered so far. Entries close Monday 29 th October. Considering a Halloween dress up and play evening under lights with free sausage sizzle, lollies etc, possibly evening of Saturday 28 th or Monday 30 th or Tuesday 31 st.

Club Captains report Wow, where did that month go?!! What a busy time it has been for all, culminating in a great Spring Doubles tourney last weekend. Thanks to all those involved with that tourney, Sarah for the outstanding food, Stacey for the prizes, Luke and Sarah for organising the draw and so on. We re very privileged to have a club that has so many volunteers with a wide set of skills and a passion for the club and our Tennis family. Next year though, I think we need to consider a mixed grade and also bring in some more of the teenagers. Wondering if it s possible also to have all mixed, women and mens finals on together to generate more of a vibe and crowd down on courtside with a bbq, music, etc. Maybe the satellite container clubrooms will create some of the vibe that I felt was missing for the final this year. Containers update We have had quotes back, both very similar at around the $58k for 2. Suzannah has submitted the request for funding and we await the result of that. In the meantime the sub committee has been working on finalising design layout etc and possible placement of the containers, be it 1 or 2. Saturday clubdays As you are aware, I sent out an email to the senior club members regarding the experimenting of a social comp and a competitive comp on Saturday afternoons. This idea came about because of some feedback we received from several members of the Saturday group, felt they would like something a little more competitive. The response was great and positive with many emails in support of the idea. However the first day we were to trial it, the weather gods didn t play their part and we had very small numbers show up. This resulted in not enough people to get a good idea of how it could work, and the usual clubday format was played. We re into Spring now and I m sure there will be double the numbers for the next clubday at which we can trial the format again and monitor the results.

Saturday mornings Juniors Again, week 2 saw increased numbers of juniors turning up. We are so lucky to have such great coaches for these Saturday mornings willing to give their time freely. Feedback I personally have had from Parents is all absolutely positive about the sport and more particularly the club and the organisation. Credit to Luke and Jac for taking the sport to the schools creating an even greater awareness of our great game and no doubt having an impact on the growth of the junior numbers on Saturdays. Thump 2s Unfortunately not as successful this year as last for Greendale. However I suspect we were set up as is always the way when you are the favourite and top dog from the season previous. Interclub is coming and hopefully we can get some redemption for Greendale out of that. That s all for me for now, thanks again to you all for your outstanding, loyal and passionate work you are doing for HB s premiere tennis club. Cheers Gary.
