Visit Our Website: www.pvschools.net/smhs October 5, 2015 Make every day count! ½ Day on Tues 10/6 On Tuesday, 10/6, we will have a ½ day for professional development. What are we going to work on? We are using AVID strategies to help improve academic rigor and engagement in the classroom. AVID is a program at Shadow Mountain that helps students achieve their dreams of going to college. The strategies taught to students help them organize, take notes, study, read critically, and write effectively. AVID helps to prepare our students for University and beyond. Teachers who use and teach these strategies have students who are more engaged and able to perform at much higher levels of academic success. Another aspect of our ½ day is that we are implementing a mentoring program. Volunteer upperclassmen have been paired with our freshmen to help them through the transition to high school during 6 th and 7 th period on Tuesday. Thank you to our STUGO, AVID, and our teachers for making our ½ days valuable for staff and students! Week of Oct 5 Mon 10/5- Orchestra Concert at Horizon High School Auditorium at 7:00 pm Tues 10/6- ½ Day for Professional Development. Students are dismissed at 11:30, GYRO HOUSE/PTC Fundraiser Thurs 10/8- Choir Concert at Horizon High School Auditorium at 7:00 pm 10/9- Paint Phoenix Purple at SMHS vs. North Canyon Football Game Future Matador Night at Football Game! Our auditorium may be out of commission, but our performing arts programs are going strong. Please try to make it to our Orchestra and Choir Concerts this week at the Horizon High School Auditorium! Our concerts are always incredible shows!

Homecoming 10/23/2015 What you need to know and what your student will forget to tell you! First, some tips for parents. Homecoming can be an amazing experience for our students. Please help make homecoming special. Talk to your student about making good choices. Let them know most kids are NOT using alcohol, are NOT using drugs, and are NOT promiscuous. If they say everyone that they hang out with is doing it, it s time to find some new friends. It may be hard to have these discussions, but it will be even harder after they make a poor choice. Know how your student is going to and getting home from the dance. Make sure they can contact you if they need to. If they are getting a lift, meet the driver. Make sure that the driver is someone that you can trust to make good decisions. LOTS of students go to the dance without a date. Tell your student that it s fine to go to the dance with friends. Wear comfortable shoes. Every single dance our ladies wobble in on the most uncomfortable looking shoes, then they take them off and hide them in a corner until they are ready to leave. I am absolutely sure that somewhere there is a comfortable, yet fashionable shoe. OK now for the real information.. (Continued page 3) Gyro House Fundraiser SMHS Project Safe Grad Money raised will be donated to Project Safe Party Graduation 2015. Tuesday Oct 6 th from 11:30 am-9:00 pm 10652 N. 32 nd St. in the YouFit Plaza 2
