1 SUNCHASE Overview This presentation is intended to provide an overview of planned events during the 2019 SunChase Solar GoKart race. There are some significant changes from previous years, so please review this document carefully. All events are subject to change based on availability of locations/personnel/equipment, as well as weather conditions. We will do our best to communicate any changes with the representatives of each team. No changes (other than gear/sprocket ratios) can be made to the vehicle after inspection. 3 Day 1 Arrival Instructions Seidler Hall Boardwalk arking Garage 2 lease arrive on campus between 2pm and 3pm. Karts and team vehicles can be parked anywhere available in arking Garage 2. This lot will remain open until Saturday morning. Team resentations will start at 2pm, and should be done around 5:30pm. All teams should check in before their scheduled presentation time in Seidler Hall 114. Refreshments will be provided during presentations. Inspection of vehicles will start at 2pm and will continue 3 until all vehicles have been inspected.

4 Team resentations: Friday 2:00pm 5:30 pm resentations should be no more than 7 minutes each. Teams should attempt to cover the following topics to the best of their ability. Evidence of Technical Knowledge Overall demonstration of technical knowledge in the design and development of the solar go kart. Confidence and knowledge of the technical aspects required to retrofit the go kart for solar. Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems evident. Innovation in Modifications Modifications to the go kart over the basic instructions and/or prior year designs demonstrate innovation for solar collection, battery efficiency, wind resistance, and mechanical resistance. Team justifies choices for modifications with test data. Evidence of Teamwork and Knowledge Teamwork evident in the presentation. Team members were able to support one another. Questions were anticipated, answered correctly by multiple individuals, and additional information was readily available. resentation Skills Quality, relevant visual aids. 5 Kart Inspections: Friday 2pm 7pm Karts must be left in arking Garage 2 for inspection. At least 1 team member must be presented for their Kart s inspection. Teams who s carts do not meet the safety requirements detailed in the 2019 Rules and Regulations will not be allowed to race. Infractions on ower Supply that do not effect the safety of the vehicle will be subject to the following penalties: Batteries 1sec/lap penalty for every 2Wh above the allowed 960Wh. (Example: a kart with total battery capacity of 1000Wh, is 40Wh over therefore a 20sec penalty per lap would be applied.) anels 1sec/lap penalty for every 3W above the allowed 900W (Example: a kart with total solar capacity of 990W, is 90W over therefore a 30sec penalty per lap would be applied.) Karts will be assigned race numbers (on 8.5in x 11in laminated sheets) after clearing inspection. These numbers must be clearly posted on the Front, Left, and Right sides of the kart. Teams will also be assigned 2 Mentor, 4 Driver, and up to 4 it crew numbers. These areas include the pits and areas with only one lane reserved for race karts (near road crossings). assing zone, pass safely when road is clear. For all races karts must remain on the LEFT of the cones dividing the road. Cars will be driving on the right side of the cones, in the same direction as the karts. 7

10 Course Map (it & Start / Finish) Staging its Finish Line Starting Line Direction of travel for all karts. During the race. ath for Karts entering and leaving the race at the start and end of the race. Crew walking paths. Only designated crew members are allowing in the crew area. No persons other than race officials and designated crew should be on the shoulder of the road. Crew should only cross the road at the cross walk or as directed. Spectators and non active crew should remain on the 2 nd & 3 rd floors of the parking garage. All crew and spectators should follow the instruction of the police and race officials. Failure to follow these restrictions may result in penalties or disqualification. 10

11 Starting Each Sprint At the start of each sprint, Karts will line up for starting in the left and middle lanes of the road. Kart will be released 2 at a time, and start time will be recorded. The Karts lap and total times are calculated relative to the start times. Crew may push Karts up to the starting line up, but drivers should be in their Kart with the appropriate safety gear at the start of line up for the race. Crew should push their Kart from behind and the driver and crew should be sure to maintain a safe distance from of any other Kart. Keep in mind that most Kart s panels extend well beyond the front and rear of the Kart. No persons should enter the lane reserved for non race traffic. 11

12 Finishing the 1 st & 2 nd Laps Non Race ehicle Traffic Kart that is about to finish their 2 nd Lap. Kart that has just completed their 1 st Lap and is starting their 2 nd Lap. Kart that has finished their 2 nd Lap, and is coasting towards the Start Line and preparing to make a safe stop. At the end of the first lap remain in the middle lane and continue to travel at a safe speed. You may pass karts who have already finished, but you may NOT go around other Kart in the middle lane. After you finish your second lap, please coast towards the Start line and only stop when approaching the start line or another finished racer. Do not come to an abrupt stop at the finish line, as there may be Karts finishing behind you. 12

13 Stopping After Each Sprint. After completing their 2 nd lap for each sprint, Karts will safely stop in the left most lane (near the grass) at the start line or behind another stopped Kart. Leave no less than 10 feet nor more than 20 feet of space in front of your Karts. Any Kart that does not stop within 10 feet of another Kart will have a 1 minute penalty added to their sprint time. Any Kart that comes into contact with another Kart, the at fault Kart will be disqualified. Karts may be pushed by Crew from the back (not the sides) to position the Karts and make more room on the course for other Karts to finish. 13

14 Setting Up for the Next Sprint! Staging its Finish Line Starting Line Any Karts that do not finish the previous sprint within 15 minutes of their start time will be disqualified from the current and subsequent sprint and should be moved to the parking lot / pit areas. Race officials will help with ick Up of any Karts that cannot return to pits under their own power between races. Karts will line up for the next sprint in the Order that they finished the previous sprint. After all Karts have finished / timed out from the 4 th sprint, Karts will move back to the parking lot / pit areas for the presentation of awards. 14

15 Race enalties & Delays Race enalties: All teams will suffer a 1 minute penalty for the first of the following infractions. Subsequent infractions will result in disqualification. Failing to follow instructions of race officials or police before or during the race. Exceeding the 10mph speed limit inside the parking garage (this includes failing to decelerate prior to entering the garage, and accelerating prior to leaving the garage). reventing another kart from passing. Failing to stay in the right of the lane to allow other karts to pass on the left. Unsafe passing. assing on the right, passing on no passing sections of the course, passing in or near an intersection. Other unsafe or un sportsman like conduct as determined by race officials. Failing to come to a stop with at least 10 feet of space between karts at the end of a sprint. Additional any reckless behavior as determined by race officials will result in IMMEDIATE disqualification. Race Delays: All karts are required to follow instructions of race officials and police officers. Safety is our #1 priority. Any kart that is required to stop will have their total time reduced by 5 sec + the duration of the stop. 15

16 Awards: The awards Ceremony will be held in arking Garage 2, at approximately 1:30pm after all times have been tallied. 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd lace awards will be given for: Best resentations Fastest Total Race Time Total Race Time is calculated as the sum of all 4 sprint times + penalties. Additionally an award will be given for the best lap time in each sprint. A single team will only receive an award for their fastest time, and cannot win more than 1 award in this category. If a team has the fastest time in multiple sprints they will receive 1 award for fastest time, and the second fastest time will receive an award as well. Overall (combination of both races and presentations). Teams are awarded points based on performance throughout the event. 16
