2 About George Woods George Woods competed for many years in all facets of motor sport. At the same time he encouraged others, especially novices, ladies, youngsters and the like to have a go, too. George always used a very standard Peugeot for his motor sport. George s Peugeot 403 (and later his 404) went in everything, whether it was a motorkhana, a trial (anything from club event to national championship), an open race meeting (in the early 70s, you could see George s 403 fighting Peter Brock for a corner George proudly wore a tee-shirt emblazoned with the words Ecurie Mobile Chicane accompanied by a picture of him and Brockie disputing the same bit of bitumen), a circuit sprint, a hillclimb or an observed section trial. He was an important part of CAMS, being Chairman of the Victorian State Council for several years in the late 70s; he was awarded CAMS Service Award in George lived life to the full. As well as motor sport he was passionate about music, particularly jazz. An accomplished musician, he played his guitar at many a function, motor sport or otherwise, either solo or with his group. George succumbed to a heart attack in In honour of the man and his enthusiasm for motor sport our event is called the GEORGE WOODS NOVICE RALLY. This is the 34 th George Woods Novice Rally; as such, it is the longest running introductory event on the calendar and one of the longest running events of any kind. Many of today s top rally competitors cut their teeth on this event before going on to bigger and better things. While for many other club level competitors it is the only rally they compete in each year. Please participate in this event in the spirit George always embodied trying as hard as he could no matter what sort of machinery the rest of the field was running, but above all having fun. If you drive in the event knowing, as George usually did, that you have to drive the same car to work on Monday, you will be able to get a lot of enjoyment out of the sport without needing to be a millionaire. You will also find that with a bit of experience, you will regularly embarrass those with deep pockets but the wrong attitude! Have Fun, but be safe.

4 Further Regulations page 4 1. COMPETITION NUMBER See attached entry list. If you missed the ballot due to an incomplete entry form, you will be allocated a competition number on satisfactory completion of your entry. 2. SCHEDULE 2.1 Documentation and Scrutiny Documentation and Scrutiny is on Wednesday, 29 th March 2017 from 18:00 to 20:30 at J C Autos, 578 Canterbury Rd, Vermont: ph Vehicles are to be presented in a Ready to run condition with exception of tyres. Vehicles will be checked for safety and eligibility as well as per the Supplementary Regulations, the NCR and the NRC. When both Documentation and Scrutiny have been completed satisfactorily, you will be given a signed scrutiny form that you must exchange for your Route Instructions at the start of the event. No scrutiny form, no route instructions, no start. Entries close at 20.00hrs on Wednesday, 29 th March 2017 at the scrutiny venue. 2.2 Event Start: The event start/finish is at the Powelltown Recreation Reserve, Yarra Junction/Noojee Rd, Powelltown. Rally HQ is in Powelltown Sports Club pavilion (200M S of RJ at GR RS Beenak map). Book-in will open at 15:30. All competitors must report by 17:30. Route Instructions will be available from 16:45, at 1 minute intervals in car number order. You will need to surrender your signed scrutiny/documentation form in exchange for your route instructions. Cars will start each component of the event at 2 minute intervals in order as on Entry List. The first car will start at 18:53 (Novice component) or 19:32 (Historic component). Your actual start time may be a few minutes earlier than shown on the entry list if cars ahead of you have withdrawn. You must be ready to start at the actual start time, so be in the vicinity of the start control in plenty of time. 2.3 Competitor Briefing There will be a compulsory competitors briefing held at 18:00. Both Crew Members must attend. 3. OFFICIAL MAPS Beenak & Toorongo RS 1:50,000. You will need to supply your own copy of these maps. In case you are having trouble getting a copy, we will have some copies of the maps available for sale at scrutiny and at the start (but best ring us Glad if you want one as we may sell out). 4. OTHER ROAD USERS This event has road closure controls to avoid members of the public from driving on the roads used in competitive sections of the rally. Because of the navigational nature of some sections of the event, it is possible to encounter other competitors travelling in a different direction to you, please drive accordingly at all times. 5. RUNNING DETAILS The event will be run in 1 Division with Late Running Time being 90 minutes. PROCEDURE AT PASSAGE CONTROLS Crews must stop at all Passage Controls and present their road card to the control official for endorsement. Reduce speed at P board, stop your car beside control official, open your navigator s window, place your road card on your lap (under map light), allow control official time to mark your card and to step back from your car before you proceed.

5 Further Regulations page 5 7. CAUTION BOARDS AND SAFETY TRIANGLES All competitors must drive appropriately when a caution board (or a competitor s safety triangle) is displayed. There may be caution boards on the road that are not called up in the route instructions. Wherever the word caution is used in an instruction or by use of boards, its degree shall be indicated as follows: (i) One Caution Board ( ) indicates a hazard where no significant reduction in speed is required but where difficulty might be encountered if crews were unaware of the hazard. (ii) Two Caution Boards ( ) indicate a situation where damage to a vehicle or crew could result from negotiating the hazard at speed. (iii) Three Caution Boards ( ) indicates a severe hazard which cannot be negotiated without a significant reduction in speed. 8. NO WHEEL SPIN RULE Drivers note, you will incur a 30 minute penalty if you spin your wheels excessively at or within 50 metres of a competitive start line. This is for the safety of the officials and to minimise road damage. Avoiding wheelspin is also the quickest way to get mobile! 9. ODOMETER CHECK The official distance measuring device read 8.00km between the YJ8 and the YJ16 signs on Yarra Junction - Noojee Rd. Both signs are on top of Armco barriers on the North side of the main road the YJ8 is just East of Mt Beenak Rd (RJ at GR ) and the YJ16 is just West of the intersection with the Powelltown Recreation Reserve entry (RJ at GR RS Beenak map). Please take care when doing U-turns not over double or solid single white lines and avoid using residents driveways there is plenty of room to turn at Mt Beenak Rd at the Recreation Reserve. 10. FUEL AVAILABILITY No fuel will be available at the start/finish area. You will have to refuel from your own supplies. The nearest 24 hour pump fuel is at Lilydale (40km from Powelltown). In the afternoon, there is fuel available at Launching Place (the Log Cabin Roadhouse). 11. AWARDS Awards will be as set out in Supplementary Regulations ACCOMMODATION Camping is permitted at the start/finish location. 13. CATERING Food and drinks will be available at HQ before, during and after the event. If you have any special dietary requirements e.g., vegetarian, please contact gladfish@netspace.net.au ASAP. 14. CONTACT NUMBERS Clerk of Course Glad Fish Road Directors Ray Garrad , and Nick Wright Officials Co-ordinator Val Knight AMENDMENT TO SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS Supplementary Regulation 1(a) is amended by the replacement of the word Novice in the first sentence by the word Introductory; this is to ensure that the component falls under the definition of an Introductory Rally as set out in NRC Also, NRC 1.34 (iv) is replaced by NRC 2.35 (d). The revised wording is shown below in italics. 1 THE EVENT The event will have two components conducted on public and/or private roads in the State of Victoria on 1-2 April 2017 and hereinafter referred to as the event. a) The George Woods Novice Rally a Multi-Club Non-Special Stage Novice Introductory Rally. This component will incorporate the Rookies Ramble, a shorter event for Novice and Rookie competitors only. As well as its primary role in introducing new competitors to the sport of rallying, this component will also form Round 1 of the Historic Rally Association (HRA) 2017 Standard Car Challenge and insofar as this is concerned, NRC 1.34 (iv) 2.35 (e) shall not apply. b) The George Woods Historic Rally a Multi-Club Non-Special Stage Rally; this component will form Round 1 of the HRA 2017 Rally Championship.
