Club Permit Renewals and admissions:- Your club signatory is a fellow club member and volunteer. He doesn t get paid to sign your vehicle renewal or new application. He is putting his reputation on the line by virtue of his signature, for you. He lives 48 kilometres from Ballarat, Runs his own business, works an average 12 hours a day, and has commitments just like everyone else. Please do not expect him to be available at a minutes notice to sign your renewals or check your new admissions to the scheme. As the vehicle s owner, it is your responsibility to make it happen and not the other way around. Read the rules and Regulations and update yourself on the Club Permit Scheme Requirements, Plan in advance, Book in advance, Network in advance and the signatory will do his best to work with you so that you can enjoy your pride and joy. His address is david@transportablehomesvic.com.au. Our annual Christmas Breakup Autocross is also known as the Geordie Fawcett Memorial Autocross. Some have asked who is this Geordie Fawcett. Geordie is the brother of Mark and Ben Fawcett who in the early 90s was known to punt a well prepared Volvo around our beloved Autocross track along with his 2 brothers. The Volvo in the hands of any of the 3 boys was very competitive much to our dismay when we all still thought of it as a block of flats. Sadly Geordie was killed in a tragic plane crash just behind our Club Rooms. The Fawcett family of Andrew and Jenny as parents along with Mark and Ben as brothers chose to donate a large perpetual trophy to the club to be awarded each year as the Geordie Fawcett Memorial Autocross in memory of Geordie. This autocross is a little different to the others we run throughout the year where its decided on the single fastest lap of however many laps we can squeeze in on the day. Its normally run after a free lunch at the clubrooms as part of our Christmas break up where Santa comes along with a gift for the young at heart, and then those of us so inclined can make some dust there after. Preceding all this there is also a car display where we can show off any pride and joy we might have. Any part of this day is always good fun so put the day aside, get the car and or kids ready and roll up! Website info 4

5 Well Christmas isn t far away, and I for one are looking forward to a rest over the summer months, it s been a huge year for the BLCC and motorsport in general. The club has organized many events this year, with most events having a great turn out and ran successfully. It s a shame that in the latter part of this year there were some of our stronger events fell short with entries and had to be cancelled. One being the final round of the Autocross series (and a day nighter) and a CDC and the other was Cogs Carnival. With these two events not attracting entries has me a bit bemused in why this would happen? Are we running to many events? Are the events to long such as Cogs over two days? I have asked members at club nights but these are usually the same 60 or so members that turn up day in day out. So if you have any feedback let us know. Our last event for 2015 will be the Geordie Fawcett Memorial Autocross, this event is in honor of a young member of our club, that was killed during the prime of his youth doing something that he loved working on planes. Geordie was an active member with competing, being part of the committee and working on equipment around the complex. I would have to say that I haven t seen a block of flats (Volvo) move so quickly around the autocross track. The Fawcett family arranged to have the Xmas autocross named after Geordie, the format is different to all our other autocrosses, its scored on your best lap only, so you need to try and put that one perfect lap together sounds easy yeah? Not really. The whole day is based around Family with a tyre warming exercise in the morning for juniors and another for the big kids. The 4x4 track will be going also. Lunch and a car display at the clubrooms with the Presidents Trophy to be awarded. And the funny fat man in a red suit comes along and has a surprise for the kids. Then onto the competition of the autocross, with a presentation at the end of the day for the winner and a few refreshments at the end of the day. It is with sad new that I advise the club that Patricia Ellis past earlier this month, Patricia was the wife of Jack Ellis, and the mother of current members Ian and Peter. I would like to on behalf of the BLCC like to pass on our condolences to Ian, Peter and Simon. I wish all BLCC members and their families a safe and fun Christmas full of family and laughter. 6 FOUR WHEEL DRIVE NEWS SIMPSON DESERT TRIP PART 3 - by Garry Doyle Day 15 and day 2 in the desert. Along the WAA line you cross several salt lakes and traverse the boundary of another. For a brief moment you enter the Northern Territory so on this trip we had now driven four states and one territory. We arrived at Poeppel Corner where we took the photos we needed. This was our last corner of corner country so it had some special significance. Lunch here and we continued on our way. WE travelled the French Line which was extremely slow and rough. We averaged 13kph along this section and it s due mainly to the soft sand and the fact that people were towing and had become stuck leaving holes on the up and down sides of dunes. Mid afternoon we arrived at Knolls Track which is where we turned off to make our way south. The going was much easier except for the limestone outcrops close to the Approdina Knolls but once past that the track certainly smoothed ou. Travelling the swales between the dunes is much easier. We had a plan to set up camp by 4:00 each afternoon so we stopped along Knolls Track. There was plenty of wood, dead bushes everywhere. We didn t need the wood we brought, but that was in case. That night we set up the projector and watched the film about Tom Kruze. There s nothing like sitting around a fire in the desert, having eaten dinner and then watching a film. Day 16 and more to see. We reached the Rig Road and continued south. Our target was the Lone Gum. Now that s one big gum tree out here in the middle of nowhere. We reached here in time for lunch and while we were eating, someone spotted a koala in the tree. Not believing them, we all rushed for the tree to find there was in fact a koala. It had obviously been there for a while as it was stuffed. It wasn t real of course, but made a great talking point. Interesting fact is that there are at least 4 more trees growing from seeds around the massive Coolabah. We returned the way we d come for a short way before turning onto the WAA line. This track runs through the centre of the Simpson Desert and like the Rig Road, has many clay topped dunes. Normally the trip from East to West is harder with the climb up the steeper part of each dune. This year the trip was easier as the approaches were much smoother, obviously from cars sliding down the steep face. The western side was quite chopped up. We stopped near Lynnies Junction to view a memorial to a past club member of the Ballarat Light Car Club who was killed in a motor cycle accident. The day was getting on and we wanted to be past the junction so we had about 5 more kilometres before setting up camp. This put us in a good position to make Dalhousie next day. Day 17 and the last day in the Desert. We travelled on the Rig Road back to the French Line and the roughness again. All cars were travelling well, even the broken Landcruiser and Rod heard via the HF radio that Adam had arrived home safely, so that was great news. He d used more than 8 litres of oil, so his decision to miss the desert was the right one. The first stop of the day was the sign announcing the Simpson Desert. The cars were positioned and we gathered by the sign as cameras were loaned out for the photos. 6

7 A brief stop at Purni Bore and a toilet break then on to a roadside stop for lunch. The track had now changed from the sand and the dunes to gravel once more. The corrugations had also returned. A couple of stops for photos and to dump rubbish in the tip at Dalhousie Springs and onto the campsite and it was only mid-afternoon. That meant one thing, set up camp and wash the dust off in the spring. An hour and a half in 38 degree water is just the ticket after 4 days of dust and dryness. Everyone had a great swim and relax. There are no fires allowed at Dalhousie and combined with the fact we d camped over a wide area, meant socializing aroi8nd the fire wasn t going to happen. It was also very cold, so we ended up putting the little fella to bed and 10 minutes later following him just to stay warm. Day 18 and leaving the desert, we travelled toward Mt Dare. The rains a month or so earlier had made Pirdirka Track impassable, although that was open again but we d planned a fuel stop at Mt Dare. The trip was reasonable and we arrived at the Mt Dare Hotel around 11:00am. The first thing I noticed was a sign on the diesel pump No fuel delivery tomorrow. Fortunately tomorrow was today and the truck should arrive anytime. We waited about an hour and there were quite a few others there also waiting for fuel. We drank and ate and there isn t much more to do so I checked on how much fuel we had and ended up with just enough to get to Oodnadatta maybe. Anyhow it would be close enough to get towed. Josh and Tik were staying as we d phoned ahead and organized parts by plane from Alice Springs. They d arrive the next day and Josh and Tik would be on their way a day later. We said our goodbyes and left for Oodnadatta. We stopped for lunch at a water hole and passed the fuel truck coming in from Port Augusta. If we d waited it would have delayed us by 3 to 4 hours so our decision was the right one. All we had to do was hope we had enough fuel between us. We stopped a little later and pumped tyres up as the track was excellent. Passing Hamilton Station we noticed the fuel tankers rear trailer he leaves it there to be picked up on the return trip. What we did know was that Oodnadatta had just received a fuel drop so we should be OK. With low fuel warning lights on, we made it to the Pink Roadhouse. I took 143 litres into a 145litre tank. Others took similar amounts, but fuelled up and fed, we made off for Algebuckina where we d set up camp for the night. Now Algebuckina has a big steel bridge from the old Ghan railway and it s a magnificent site. We set up camp on the top of the ridge which was great when we got there but overnight when the wind picked up, the light weight tents gave us grief. Day 19 and the last day the group would be travelling together. Heading off down the Oodnadatta Track we stopped a few times to take in the sights. The Bubbler was a terrific example of the springs in the area. We helped a stranded Navara owner change his tyre. He couldn t get the car high enough with the standard jack. It pays to read the owner s manual to see how you locate the jack in the rear and it s not under the sill. Not much further and the William Creek Pub was a great stopping point for lunch. The weather had also warmed up and when we left, the Navara owner was just leaving with a new tyre still at highway pressures. Lake Eyre was our next stop and Lake Eyre South has plenty of water so it was a great picture. The day was getting on and we wanted to look around Marree. The original plan was to get to Farina another 50 odd kilometres, but we decided to stop at the Marree Caravan park and have a pub tea for the final night together. The Caravan park was OK and the pub great. We had to visit the Tom Kruze room which we did and take photos of his truck as well as Scobie s truck. Marree isn t big but it was a great place after where we d travelled. The next morning we had our group photo at the railway station before heading off in different directions. 7

8 Day 20 and we were travelling up the Birdsville Track to collect our camper. Greg and Su joined us as they were heading for Mt Isa. Pat and Joe and Rod and the fellas headed south toward Morgan where they d split up the next day. Rod and Tine stayed an extra day in Marree to let Dakota rest. It was a sad departure, but there were a few days left yet. The trip up the Birdsville Track was fast and smooth. We stopped on the track where Burke and Wills crossed it many years ago (I don t think it was there then) and had lunch and a kick of the footy. Now not many people can say they have kicked a footy on the Birdsville Track for a half an hour and not been disturbed by passing traffic. Into Birdsville and a quick stop at Burke and Wills tree and back to the caravan park. We collected the camper and put it up for the last time before getting ready for the trip home next day. Once again the pub beckoned so we had a final dinner before settling in for the night. It was also the warmest night of the trip with the temperature hovering around 21 degrees. Over night there were a few drops of rain, but the warmth and wind kept it dry. Day 21 and we met Greg and Su for breakfast at Dusty s bakery before saying goodbye to them and heading south by ourselves. There was no real plan on how far we would get that day, but it started out with a challenge passing several caravans and their dust. In clear air, we were able to get a good few kilometres under our belt before reaching Mungerranie where we stopped for a coffee. The track had been a little damp and I found out we d had 2mm of rain over night. That was perfect, however after leaving Mungerranie the track got decidedly wetter. In fact it was a challenge keeping car and camper on the track with the slippery conditions. It didn t improve much all the way to Marree where we had to stop for fuel. We d used a fair bit due to the head wind and the mud. The total rig must have weighed close to maximum with the build up of Birdsville Track under the wheel arches. Back on the road south, we stopped to pump tyres up to normal cruising pressures before heading off. A brief stop at Farina to check out the ruins and the camping area before settling back to the bitumen. We started looking for a place to stop as the day was getting on and with Hawker being still 60 kilometres away, we opted to free camp on Mooralanna Scenic Drive. What a magnificent night, plenty of red gum, great views of the Flinders in the setting sun and peace and quiet. A great finish to a great trip, but we still had to get home. Day 22 and as it turned out, our final day on the road. We left our camp and were on our way by 8:15 am. Through Hawker and onto Peterborough for morning tea and a fuel up. This was a nice break but we were soon on our way again heading for Vic. We stopped by the Murray River at Morgan for lunch and another kick of the footy. Almost back in our home state. We followed the Murray and decided to cross on the ferry into Waikerie. Evan thought that was excellent, going on a boat with the camper as well. We took a short cut to Pinaroo where we fuelled up and had another ice cream. The final 100 kilometres to Ouyen where we had planned to stop the night. Josh and Tik were also making their way there from further north so we planned to meet up. WE got to Ouyen around 5:30pm and we weren t going to catch up as Josh s GPS took him in the wrong direction. It was getting on; we were in Victoria; there was only one place open for something to eat; only 4 hours to drive home; Evan are you OK to keep going? He was so we ate tea and continued on our way. It was soon dark and lucky we d stopped for something to eat, the Sunraysia is a lonely place on a Saturday night. Hardly any cars, nothing else open but an easy drive. We got home around 9:45 and were looking forward to our own beds. It was a great trip and we had a six year old that knew all about Burke and Wills, Tom Kruze, the Birdsville Track and plenty of Lee Kernaghan s songs. In fact he was judging the size of towns by saying there s a pub, a store and not much more. Bring on the next trip in

9 Darren Windus Takes VRC Series Recently whilst looking at Competition Rule Changes it was suggested that it might be time to outline what the CDC in Ballarat Light Car Club terms is. CDC is short for Club Drivers Championship. The Club Drivers Championship is usually made up of 8 rounds across various disciplines within our competition calendar. It is a highly sought after trophy and perhaps the closest thing we have to a Sheep Station. Originally set up by Frank Devine and Keith McElroy and others it aims to recognize the best driver over 12 months across various types of events. The CDC is usually made up of 2 Autocross Events, 2 Motorkhana Events, 2 Hill climb Events and 2 Bitumen Sprint Events. This is so half is on bitumen and half is on dirt/gravel surface. The CDC usually uses the even round numbers of our Autocross and Motorkhana series. This tends to bolster numbers a bit in those rounds but not always as we found recently. Ballarat has a new state champion after the weekend with Darren taking the Focus on Furniture VRC Series, in his Subaru WRX with Ballarat s Jamie Sargent in the co-driver s seat. It started out easy but towards the end the team had to overcome the pressures of Wal in the Evo and a young up and comer some young kid, in a blue Subaru? Mechanical issues with a stick in the radiator at the Akodemos and a sticky valve at the Begonia during the series. Darren and Jamie needed to finish at least in the top 3 to beat Wal. On the Wednesday prior to Begonia Wal had to pull out, this should have given Darren the title but he needed to win as the series rules state that you must drop a round. The Windus/Sargent show rolled into to town hungry for the win in the Begonia (Something Sarge has been trying to win for many years) they may not have won the Begonia but they did secure the series. Well Done Darren, but I would be watching my back with that kid of yours. Arron Secombe An outright trophy is awarded each year and the winner gets their name on the honor board in the clubrooms. A few people have won it more than once (10 times in one person s case) and a few others just once. The point scores from any given round of this series is a sliding scale as follows 20 points for 1 st, 16 points for 2 nd, 14 points for 3 rd then 12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 etc all the way down to 15 th place. The class awards use the same points but continue with 1 point each after 15 th place. Its a great series and very much sought after trophy. Being able to get your name on that honour board is a pretty mean feat. As per the rules for most of our series we all get to drop our worst round from the tally which can be zero if we don t do an event or anything above that. Give it a go you might surprise yourself and your mates even if its only a class win before working up to Outright one. the big one the Written by Rod Hall 9

10 November Competition notes from Sports Sub At our Sports Sub-Committee meeting it was resolved that for 2016 the Club Driver Championship (CDC) would remain as it has previously with 2 Hill climbs, 2 Sprints, 2 Motorkhanas and 2 Autocrosses. The notion of including a couple of rounds of our Khanacross series although receiving positive support was seen to give the CDC a bit too much dirt flavor. We will revisit this idea at the end of Towards the end of 2016 we have the opportunity to be part of a Quad Series Hillclimb Championship. The idea is 4 hiilclimbs run by 4 different club s at our respective hillclimb venues in October, November & December It will be similar to the Triangle Autocross Series we used to have between Bendigo, Geelong and ourselves. The Quad Hillclimb Series will be at Mt Gambier, Ararat, Port McDonald and Mt Leura (BLCC). The rules are still being sorted out as are the dates. The BLCC round at Mt Leura will be a round of our Club Driver s Championship. The events will be all run under a multiclub permit so will be slightly lower status than the State Rounds. Ph Robert on Hello all. Recently we had to cancel both Cogs Carnival and Round 4 of our Autocross Series due to insufficient entries being received. If you know why this happened please tell us. Some suggestions are : long weekend, Autocross on Saturday vs Sunday, money is short, just wrong weekend, too many events, date confusion. We can address some of these issues but not all of them. Our calendar for 2016 is now taking shape. Its frightfully busy. Early next year we have a couple of events that need some good volunteer response from members to kick in some much needed funds into our coffers. The Swapmeet although at a slightly different venue will again need our car parking expertise on Saturday 28 th Feb. The following weekend we will be down at Camperdown running a State Round Hill climb at Mt Leura. Then just when we thought its all over we need a few cars in the Begonia Parade on Labour day and then have to follow that up with the Daryl Tunbridge Trial on 14 th April. Bring on the Anzac Day long weekend is all I can say as a spell might be needed! The CDC for next year just needs a couple of sprints added once suitable dates and event are found. Yours Rod Hall In last months edition of the Bulletin I wroteabout my disappointment in some members attitudes toward the Club Vehicle Permit Scheme and the requirements for it. Since that time, I have renewed some vehicles and checked over some new applications for the scheme together with talking to other club members who have approached me for a chat both in person and via telephone. Well, so as not to be seen as biased, this month I am writing again. But this time it is to thank those that I have mentioned above (and they all know who they are) for their moral support and understanding. Small field of 11 competitors with 3 goes at each test and the fastest time count. It was amazing how many people got the fastest time on their 3 rd run. 15 On Saturday the 14 th and Sunday the 15 th of November, the BLCC come out of the rallying wilderness to conduct the final round of this year 2015 Focus on Furniture Victorian Rally Championship. The event was run as two heat in the Avoca, Ben Major and Mount Lonarch areas. With 3 stages (50 kms competitive) in both heats. On Saturday crews pace noted the stages with a lot of mixed thoughts about SS1 Major Ben and how tricky it was to compete on notes. Sunday was a different story with 25 starters and a showroom start with the 3 top seeded cars in the background of drivers briefing in what stated as the best Rally HQ in the series at the Avoca Turf Club. With recently crowned Tasmanian Champ Craig Brooks drawing car one on the road, followed by BLCC Members Darren Windus and Jamie Sargent starting car 2 and Viv and Tracey car 3. SS 1 to no surprise Windus/Sargent shot out to a big lead in there WRX from another Windus motorsport car the time of BLCC member Arron Windus and Joe Brick followed by Craig Brooks. SS2 seen both the Windus entries run within ½ a second of each other followed again by Brooks. Special mention to BLCC pair of Darren Whyte and Davis Parkinson sitting well within the top 10 at this stage and pleasing the crowds with their sideways actions. After SS 2 there was a remote fuel stop at the Elmhurst township, at this stage both the Windus cars were starting to show signs that the cars weren t 100%, with the Windus/Sargent car requiring oil and the Windus/Brick car needing water due to a suss blown head gasket. Ballarat s Jacob McCashney was starting to show great pace and was looking for a top 3 in the heat. SS 3 Mount Avoca started to sort the men from the boys a 28km stage across the top of the Pyrness ranges. This stage was won by Windus /Sargent, but seen 2 nd place Windus/Brick lose 9 mins with a flat tyre and broken shifter with only about 2 inches of shifter to change gears with. Craig Brooks also broke a shifter on this stage. The Commodore of Coleman found it s self-beached on an embankment and had to be dragged back on. Richard North clipped a back and broke a hub on the Excel putting an end to their event. Heat 1 Results 1 st Windus/Sargent 2nd Brooks/Glenny 3 rd McCashney/Allan. 9 th Wythe/Parkinson, = 13 th Stapleton/Ellis. With 4 cars retiring in heat 1. Service After being crowd VRC champions Windus/Sargent retire due to engine issues and put the service crew to work on Arron and Joe s WRX. Brooks fixed the limp gear shift. Majority of the field changed tyres due to the stages being demanding on the black things. Heat 2 SS4 repeat of SS1, this time it was Windus/Brick well out in front taking 12 seconds out of Brooks/Glenny with McCashney/Allan a further 9 secs behind. With 6 RWD cars in the top 10 during this stage. SS 5 It was starting to look like the decision to retire the number 1 car and put all efforts into the 2 nd car to win the Bendigo Tyres Pace noted series was going to pay off with Windus/Brick winning the stage by 12 secs from Brooks/Glenny and McCashney/Allan. With Wythe/Parkinson 8 th and Stapleton/Ellis 9 th. SS 6 the last stage Windus/Brooks had a 27 sec lead over Brooks/Glenny and a huge lead over nearest competitor in the Pace Note Series Reed/Murphy. The Windus car was on a mission taking 35 secs out of the field at the 1 st split, and by the 2 nd split they were 45 secs ahead, but the tyres were going off and become hairy, Arron backed off but the WRX didn t want to turn in and clipped a back bending the front end and destroying the tyres. They managed to finish the stage but were out of the rally. The stage was won by Reed/Murphy from Brooks/Glenny and Moore/Daniell. 7 th was Wythe/Parkinson in the Dunnydore and 9 th Stapleton/Ellis. Outright for the event and he did say he was coming to win it was Craig Brooks and Steve Glenny in their Subaru WRX from Tom Reed and Will Murphy EVO 3 and Paul Eccles and Tom Ruessman WRX 3rd. 1 st 2WD was Tony Moore and Andrew Daniell from Stephen Eccles and Carrie Kereru and BLCC s Darren Wythe and David Parkinson. These 3 2WD s also took up 4 th to 6 th outright. Out of 25 starters only 17 finished with most being mechanical failures. I would like to thank all the officials that made the event safe and secure for the competitors and public. It s was a long hot dusty day and I thank you for supporting the event. What an awesome team that kept the event on time and dealt with issues on the spot. I have to admit this has been the toughest event I have directed and it took a lot out of me in the last week,the directing team really pulled together to get it over the line. And we had great support from Ross Runnalls, VRP Chair David Lambie, Scott Spedding and Dinta and Kate Officer, without these guys I think I may have pulled my hair out. I would also like to Thanks Kylie, Abby and poppy for their support over the last few months, there have been some testing times and family life has consisted of Bush tracks, and dusty days. I will now take a rest for the next couple of months and recharge the batteries as per orders from Kylie, Dinta and Kate Officer and the directing team. Would I do it again? 16 Sunday Drive Poker Run 1 st of November 2015 Our Sunday drive started well with the weather holding out with some sunshine, which stayed with us for the day. We had six classic cars arrive, three Porsches, one RX7 Mazda, one range rover 4x4 and a MG Midget. So after handing in their entrée fee of one bottle of wine and explaining a few directions of the maps that were distributed, off we went for our first scheduled stop at the old post office at Buninyong. After giving the cards a quick shuffle I handed one card to each car entrée which hopefully set the scene for a winning hand at the end of the drive at the Boat House Daylesford. We all drove off in convoy towards our next scheduled stop with a pleasant drive through the back roads too Ballan stopping at the Greendale Hotel were the second card was handed out to all participants, with some saying I ve got no chance of winning at this early stage, me being one of them. However, we all drove on through the scenic and winding roads through the Wombat state forest with all cars performing well at this stage and stopped at Blackwood for a scheduled stop and stretch so I can distribute the third card of the poker hand. A couple of us still had nothing to show of value with our cards so far to our disappointment so off we went in convoy through the Wombat State Forest with all cars still performing well with our next scheduled stop at Trentham for a coffee stop. At this stage I handed out the forth card to everyone at a nice bakery/café we found for a social chat and hot beverage which was very good. After we had our coffees we decided to head to Daylesford for lunch for the final stop for the day, however, we had one of our entree vehicles fail to start at Trentham with starter motor problems, without giving too much away it was a Porsche, green in colour. With one of the other Porsche owners attempting to jump start the other which would have made a great photo, however, none were taken. Anyway after making arrangements for the Porsche to be picked up we headed to the Boat House café for lunch with the sad sight of leaving this lovely car behind. On arriving at the Boat house Café at Daylesford we gathered around in the car park with the bottles of wine in the middle of us. As I handed the cards out I heard grumbles of nothing and might have a chance. However the winners were Wayne and Deidre Hollness with a pair of Kings that enabled them to choose three bottles of their choice with Ross Barnett coming second with a pair of Jacks who chose two bottles of his choice and third was Chris Hall/Russell Kinnersly which had nothing but an Ace who come third receiving the last bottle left, the rest of us Andrew & Don McMaster, Chris Bourke and myself had not much at all. We then headed into the Boat House café for a very nice lunch and a social chat ending an enjoyable Sunday drive. A big thank you to all who participated and hoping you had a pleasant days drive. 18 TECHNICAL BULLETIN Schedule D Apparel, Helmet Clarification REFERENCE: RATIONALE: Define the style of helmet applicable for use in motor sport events held under CAMS permit. ACTION: Amend Schedule D to read as follow: 4.3 Helmet Requirements and Advice (a) Style In addition to the helmets approved for use above, each helmet shall be one of the following design types; full face or open face. An open faced helmet is defined as a helmet that, as a minimum, covers the hair line of the average person and includes covering the ears. Specifically excluded are helmets that do not cover, when viewed in side elevation, the area from the top of the ear to the bottom of the jaw, commonly referred to as a skull cap style. (a)(b) Modifications Other than as provided in this regulation, and then only for the purpose of fitting anchorage points for the attachment of an approved head restraint device, no helmet may be modified from its specification as manufactured except in compliance with instructions approved by the manufacturer and one of the standards organisations listed above, which certified the model concerned. (b)(c) Frontal Head Restraints The fitment of tether posts for an approved head restraint device must be carried out strictly in accordance with the restraint manufacturer s fitting instructions and any guidelines published by the helmet manufacturer. Any holes drilled for the fitment of anchorage points must fall outside the impact test area defined by the relevant helmet standard. Without limiting the general prohibition of helmet modification outlined in 4.3(ab), it is nevertheless permissible to anchorage points for the attachment of approved head restraint devices to helmets complying with the following standards: Snell 2000 and 2005; SFI Spec 31.1, 31.2, 31.1A and 32.2A; BS Type A and A/FR; and FIA CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Ltd) 18

19 (c)(d) Communications Systems The FIA has advised that communication systems in helmets must have been tested with that model of helmet for standard assessment. Any subsequent additions or modifications to facilitate communication or breathing devices may invalidate helmet certification. (d)(e) Decoration Decoration of helmets is potentially dangerous, and members are warned of the hazard of using paint on approved helmets. Paint, stickers and transfers, or surface treatments can react with helmet shell material and affect its protective capacity; therefore, where a manufacturer provides guidelines or restrictions on the painting or decoration of helmets, these must be followed, using only paint or surface treatment specified by them (eg, air drying acrylic, polyurethane enamel or others) and preferably a painter having their approval. This is particularly important for injection-moulded shells which are not usually suitable for painting. The shell being painted should be efficiently masked as paint penetrating the interior can affect the performance of the helmet liner. Paints requiring heat curing should not be used and any process should not exceed the maximum temperature of conditioning of the helmet in the standard to which it is approved. The manufacturer s instructions should also be consulted for any considerations on the use of stickers and transfers. (e)(f) Accidents & Damage Competitors are cautioned against using a helmet which has been damaged or involved in accident. Helmets shall be deemed by the Event Officials to be in a suitable condition for motor sport use. 20 EDITOR S REPORT With Sean Payne Hey all, well its done and dusted the Begonia has been run and won. I have to say that most people would not have any idea how much work went into this event, I have watched a couple of my good friends battle through paper work from councils, fire departments, environmental agency's, police and many other departments and people. I have to give a big hand to Arron Seacombe, Clare Bennett, Ash Mabbit, Big George Davidson, and many others behind the scenes. My part in these was insignificant compared to what these people did. But it was an experience as officials coordinator. And I want to thanks all those who stuck there hand up and sat in the bush all day and watched us drive past, You are the backbone of this club and you deserve a round of applause.
