4 MIZZOU 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Tigers Take Big 12 Title into Inaugural SEC Season After a historic season in which the Tigers claimed their first ever Big 12 Tournament title and advanced to their eighth NCAA Regional in 10 seasons, history will again be made in 2013 as the Mizzou baseball program embarks upon its inaugural season in the SEC. As Mizzou head coach Tim Jamieson enters his 19th season, the University recognized that he is indeed the right man to lead the Tigers into the nation s premier baseball conference as he was rewarded with a contract extension that will keep him at Mizzou through the 2015 season. This year, Jamieson will have a team comprised of 16 newcomers and several key returners as he will look to guide his team to new heights in the SEC. PITCHING During his tenure at Mizzou, Jamieson has coached some of the best pitchers in college baseball. Names like Crow, Scherzer and Gibson immediately come to mind and this year, the Tigers may be able to add another name to that list as lefty ace Rob Zastryzny returns to Mizzou for his junior season. The Corpus Christi native has been the Tigers Friday night starter for much of his first two seasons in Black & Gold and will figure to be the ace again this season. In 2012, Zastryzny put together a complete season, posting a 3.80 ERA in a team-high innings while starting 17 games for the Tigers. He started three games in the postseason for the Tigers as well and Mizzou won all three of his starts, including a 6-0 shutout in the Big 12 Tournament opener in which he tossed 8.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just five hits. He came back on three days rest and defeated Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game as well and then beat New Mexico State in the NCAA Tucson Regional. Zastryzny struck out 76 batters last season against just 31 walks en-route to honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. After a dominant fall, he looks primed for a breakout season in After Zastryzny, the Tiger rotation is somewhat unknown heading into the winter. Sophomore righty Brett Graves, the 2011 Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year, will likely figure into the mix as he made great strides in the fall after an up-anddown freshman season. The righty was drafted by his hometown St. Louis Cardinals coming out of high school and possesses a 93 MPH fastball that will give him the 2013 Missouri Baseball Quick Facts Location... 5 chance to shut down and compete against SEC hitters all season long. Junior Eric Anderson, one of the team s best leaders, will look to return to the mound this season as well after recovering from Tommy John surgery last May. Anderson has ace stuff but has been slowed by injury in his first three seasons at Mizzou. If he can return to the rotation, he gives the Tigers a great option at one of the starting spots; he was the Tigers Friday night starter during the second half of the 2011 season after coming back from shoulder surgery. Newcomer Alec Rash, a Adel, Iowa, will be one of the main storylines for the Tigers all season long. He was the highest-drafted high school player (second round by the Phillies) to elect to come to school rather than begin his professional career. He has a power arm with a very fluid delivery that has caught the attention of scouts across the country. Still very raw, Rash has all the tools to become a very dominant college pitcher. The bullpen will be anchored by lefty Jake Walsh, who had eight saves last season in a team-high 34 appearances. Righty Ryan Yuengel possesses a great curve ball as an out pitch that will help him play a major role out of the pen while newcomer Keaton Steele, who will also play along the infield for the Tigers, figures to be the team s closer. A junior college transfer, Steele has a live arm and a firm delivery. Junior lefty Rob Zastryzny Senior Scott Sommerfeld CATCHER One of the best position battles during fall camp was at the catcher position as the Tigers have a variety of viable options to make up the second half of the battery. After fall ball, junior college transfer Dylan Kelly appears to be the top option for the Tigers at the backstop as he is a lefty with plus tools as both a hitter and defender. That combination likely has him at the top of the list as he is likely the most complete allaround catcher that the Tigers have on their roster. Also, look for Patrick Quintanilla, who likely has the best bat of the Tiger backstops, and Jake Ivory to each figure into the mix at the position this season. INFIELD If there is glaring hole left by the departure of last year s senior and draft classes, it is along the Tiger infield where they will need to replace their shortstop, third baseman and first baseman. Starting at first base, Keaton Steele will be the man expected to take over that job, replacing senior Andreas Plackis, who became the team s all-time first baseman late in the season in Steele, who also figures to be in the mix towards the back end of the Tiger bullpen, is the Tigers best defender at the position and has an above-average bat to go along with his defensive ability. Moving around the horn, junior Dillon Everett has been a mainstay on the Tiger infield, starting at second base for the majority of the last two seasons and figures to be in that role again this season. He is arguably the Tigers top defender on the infield and hit the weight room this offseason to ensure more pop with the bat in The left side of the infield will be comprised of a pair of newcomers, most likely Shane Segovia, a solid hitter and plus defender, at shortstop while Josh Lester, a 30th round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, will likely man the hot corner for the Tigers. Interestingly enough, Lester has dreams of playing in the College World Series after playing in the Little League World Series in Look for junior Michael McGraw to figure into the mix in the infield as well after he played a vital role in getting the Tigers to the NCAA Regional round last season. OUTFIELD The Mizzou outfield will again figure to be one of the strengths of this year s team, just as it was in Scott Sommerfeld returns to left field for Mizzou after leading the Tigers with a.312 batting average a season ago while Dane Opel, who was the first Tiger to ever lead the Big 12 in home runs last season with 11, will return to right field. An interesting battle will be the starting job in center field as both Brannon Champagne and Sal Belfonte will both figure into the mix there. Champagne matched a school record by reaching base safely in 32 straight games last season, but his production fell off late in the season. Belfonte is the best pure athlete on the Tiger roster and is a plus defender 5

6 MIZZOU and will always be a threat on the base paths. Belfonte improved his bat in the fall, giving him a very good chance to overtake the starting job in center this season. Aside from those mainstays, look for Logan Pearson, a junior college transfer from Crowder Junior College, to break into the mix. The Tiger coaching staff believes that he is one of the best pure athletes on the team and as he adjusts to the Division I level, he will continue to get plenty of chances in a loaded Tiger outfield. SCHEDULE The 2013 season will mark the Tigers inaugural season as members of the Southeastern Conference, which is widely regarded as the premier league in college baseball. In all, Mizzou s schedule will feature 30 home dates, including 15 home games against SEC competition. As usual, the Tigers will open the first two weekends of the 2013 season on the road and will travel to cities in the heart of SEC territory, beginning with a three-game series at Southern Miss from Feb Following that trip, the Mizzou will pay the Memphis Tigers a visit from Feb in Memphis before returning home for a 14-game homestand to kick off the month of March. Of course the three-game series at Memphis comes following last year s meeting between the two teams at Taylor Stadium. Big Ten foe Northwestern will be the first team to pay visit to Columbia this season as the Wildcats visit for a three-game stint from March 1-3. Mizzou will then host Eastern Michigan for a pair of midweek games on March 5 and 6 before hosting San Francisco for a three-game series from March 8-10 at Taylor Stadium. Of course, the series with Junior Dillon Everett San Francisco is highly-anticipated as Tiger pitching coach Matt Hobbs coached at USF before coming to Mizzou two seasons ago. Also, the Dons swept the Tigers in San Francisco last season. Mizzou will host Jackson State on March 12 before opening SEC play with powerhouse South Carolina on March 15 at Taylor Stadium. The Gamecocks have played in the College World Series final in each of the last three seasons, winning two straight before losing to Arizona last season. Of course, Mizzou played Arizona in the NCAA Tucson Regional last season. Following the series with South Carolina, the Tigers will close the homestand with a pair of midweek games against Arkansas State on March Following that, the first SEC road trip Pronunciation Guide Sal Belfonte... bell-fon-tay Brannon Champagne...CHAM-pain Gerrion Grim...JERRY-In Andrew Hohn...Hone Jeff Oracion...O-RASS-EE-OWN Patrick Quintanilla... 7 will be on tap for the Tigers as they head to Knoxville, Tenn., for a three-game series with the Tennessee Volunteers from Mach A midweek game with Nebraska-Omaha on March 26 is sandwiched between the Tigers series in Knoxville and a three-game home series against SEC powerhouse LSU from March at Taylor Stadium. With LSU coming to Taylor Stadium in late March, Mizzou fans will get to see the Tigers against two of the most storied programs in college baseball with South Carolina and LSU both playing series at Taylor Stadium in the month of March. The excitement continues the next week as the Tigers and Illini have resumed their rivalry at Busch Stadium, marking one of the premier non-conference neutral site games in all of college baseball. That game will be played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, which is home of the 2011 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Tickets for that game will be on sale through both the StlCardinals.com and on MUTigers.com. Of course, Mizzou won last year s tilt, 5-4, keeping it undefeated in three games inside Busch Stadium. The Tigers will then be on the road at Georgia from April 5-7, April 9 at Missouri State and April at Vanderbilt. Mizzou returns home for a game with Missouri State on April 17, beginning a ninegame homestand. Mizzou will host SEC powerhouse Florida from April at Taylor Stadium, a midweek game against Murray State on April 23 and then another three-game SEC series with Auburn from April Of course, Mizzou defeated Auburn in a three-game series in Auburn last season. The nine-game homestand concludes with an April 30 contest against in-state rival SEMO. The Tigers will then hit the road again for two straight weekend SEC series at Texas A&M (May 3-5) and Alabama (May 10-12) before closing the regular season with an SEC home series against Kentucky (May 16-18).
