August 20, 2016 Page 4 of 32 FROM THE LA TIMES Angels Mike Scioscia appears safe even as his team falls to the Yankees, 7-0 Mike DiGiovanna Mike Scioscia walked to the mound in the fifth inning Friday night, clapped his hands once and took the ball from Jered Weaver, who trudged to the dugout after yielding four homers and 10 hits in a 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees in Angel Stadium. It was a familiar scene that has played out often the last two seasons, but it probably won t be repeated in Weaver, the 33-year-old right-hander with the fading fastball, is in the final weeks of a five-year, $85-million deal and is unlikely to garner much interest next winter unless he regains some velocity and takes a massive cut from the $20 million he made this season. The managerial half of that picture will likely return, though. The Angels record has thrust Scioscia s name into stories speculating about which managers might be fired, but the temperature under the seat of baseball s longest-tenured field boss is not as hot as some think. I have no reason to believe Mike won t be here managing our team next season, General Manager Billy Eppler said. I think he s done a great job. He s dealt with multiple plates full of adversity and handled them with energy and passion. He s kept guys optimistic, driven, and that s the mark of a good leader. The rotation has been ravaged by injuries, with Andrew Heaney (in April), Garrett Richards (May) and Nick Tropeano (July) succumbing to season-ending elbow tears, C.J. Wilson lost for the year because of shoulder problems and Tyler Skaggs not returning from elbow surgery until late July. I go back to something Ernie Zampese told me when I was 11 years old, Eppler said, referring to the former San Diego Chargers and Rams assistant coach. He said, You have to have the horses to pull the cart. So if your horses get injured or can t pull the cart for a while... you can only do so much. Weaver has been a horse he hasn t missed a start this season because of injury but he s had only a handful of games in which he s resembled the ace who went with a 3.28 earned-run average from 2006 to Weaver is 8-11 with a 5.47 ERA and has allowed an American League-high 30 homers, including solo shots to Jacoby Ellsbury in the first inning and Ronald Torreyes, Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann in the fifth Friday night.

August 20, 2016 Page 5 of 32 When he s going well, he has the ability to locate pitches and change speeds, said Scioscia, who has two years and $12 million left on his contract. He ll give you four different looks on any count, which is tough for a hitter. But Weaver has no margin for error. When he s off, like Friday night, his breaking balls hang and his fastball, which ranges from 82 to 85 mph, is useless. He was easily outpitched by Masahiro Tanaka, who allowed five hits and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings. Nothing hurts worse than letting your teammates down, and I ve been doing it on a pretty consistent basis, Weaver said. This is definitely a tough pill to swallow. Weaver, who has battled shoulder, back and hip injuries, doesn t need to morph into Nolan Ryan. His fastball averaged 86.3 mph when he went 18-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 2014, and he has touched 86 and 87 mph a few times this season. We all sense there could be a little more in him if some things are addressed in the offseason, Scioscia said. It s not so much that he s going to gain velocity, but he has to maintain it through a season.... Weav has shown he can have success pitching at 87 mph. MLB eyes 20-second pitch clock and other measures to speed up games Mike DiGiovanna Commissioner Rob Manfred is considering radical changes to speed up the pace of play and infuse more offense into games, including limiting the number of pitching changes and defensive shifts, but if installing a 20-second pitch clock is one of them, it could be met with some resistance. I appreciate the fact they re trying to speed up games, I get it, but it s tough to implement something that could change the flow of the game, Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker said. If you take seconds between every pitch, that s different. Most of the time, you re pitching within 20 seconds, but for the one or two instances where it might take 21 seconds, I m not a firm believer that you should get penalized for it. Any changes must be negotiated between Major League Baseball and the players union as part of a new collective bargaining agreement. The current agreement expires on Dec. 1. Manfred told reporters in Houston this week that a pitch clock has been effective in the minor leagues, where pitchers are given 20 seconds from the time they receive the ball from the catcher to deliver the next pitch.

August 20, 2016 Page 6 of 32 It had no effect on me, whatsoever, said Angels left-handertyler Skaggs, who made seven triple-a starts this season before returning from shoulder and elbow injuries in July. Honestly, I didn t even notice it. Skaggs, however, said he thought there was a 30-second pitch clock at triple A. When told Manfred would like a 20-second pitch clock, Skaggs said, I think that s a little extreme. Morris departs Hal Morris, the Angels professional scouting director for the last five seasons, is leaving the organization to work in athlete development for Fantex, a San Francisco-based financial services company that allows investors to trade securities tied to the cash flows of professional athletes. Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney became the first of several baseball players to enter into an agreement with Fantex last September, taking a $3.34-million up-front payment in exchange for 10% of his future earnings. It was a tough decision, Morris, who lives in Palo Alto, said in a text message. The Angels have been great to me in my time there, and I really liked Billy Eppler, Angels general manager. Eppler, who is also interviewing candidates for the vacant scouting director job, said he will consider internal and external candidates to replace Morris, 50, a former 13-year big leaguer. I m extremely excited for his opportunity, and it will allow him to stay put in Northern California and be around his family more, Eppler said. But we ll miss him here, no doubt. Short hops Third baseman Yunel Escobar left the game in the fourth inning Friday night after fouling a bunt attempt into his face....former Angels outfielder Garret Anderson, the franchise leader in games (2,013), runs (1,024), hits (2,368) and runs batted in (1,292), will be inducted into the team s Hall of Fame in a ceremony before Saturday night s game.... First baseman C.J. Cron, out since July 9 because of a broken bone in his left hand, rejoined the Angels on Friday after a six-game rehabilitation stint with triple-a Salt Lake and will be activated Saturday.... Albert Pujols is the first player in major league history with 95 RBIs or more in 15 of his first 16 seasons.

August 20, 2016 Page 7 of 32 Angels GM says Manager Mike Scioscia has done a great job Mike DiGiovanna The Angels poor record entering Friday night s game against the New York Yankees has thrust Mike Scioscia s name into recent stories speculating on what managers might be fired, but the temperature under the seat of baseball s longest-tenured manager might not be as hot as some think. I have no reason to believe Mike wouldn t be here managing our team next season, General Manager Billy Eppler said. I think he s done a great job. He s dealt with multiple plates of adversity and handled them with energy and passion. He s kept guys optimistic, driven, and I think that s the mark of a good leader. The Angels lost their two best starting pitchers, right-hander Garrett Richards and left-hander Andrew Heaney, to season-ending elbow injuries, Heaney after his first start of the season and Richards in early May. Left-hander C.J. Wilson has missed the entire season because of a shoulder injury, left-hander Tyler Skaggs didn t return from elbow surgery until late July, and right-hander Nick Tropeano was one of the team s more effective starters before he went down with a season-ending elbow injury in mid-july. The two pitchers Eppler acquired to plug rotation spots struggled, Tim Lincecum going 2-6 with a 9.16 earned-run average in nine starts before being demoted to triple-a in early August, and Jhoulys Chacin going 2-6 with a 6.10 ERA. Closer Huston Street, slowed by rib-cage and knee injuries, has a career-worst 6.45 ERA in 26 games, and setup man Joe Smith was slowed by a hamstring injury before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs on July 1. The Angels got virtually no production out of the left-field platoon of Daniel Nava and Craig Gentry, who were both designated for assignment on July 30, and first baseman C.J. Cron and catcher Geovany Soto have missed significant time this season because of injuries. Scioscia, who has two years and $12 million remaining on his contract, led the Angels to the 2002 World Series championship and seven playoff appearances since 2000, but the injury ravaged rotation left him with little to work with this season. I go back to something Ernie Zampese told me when I was 11 years old, Eppler said, referring to the former San Diego Chargers and Rams offensive coordinator. He always said, You have to have the horses to pull the cart. So if your horses get injured or can t pull the cart for a little while you can only do so much.

August 20, 2016 Page 8 of 32 FROM OC REGISTER Angels owner Arte Moreno expects Mike Scioscia back as manager, blames injuries for frustrating season By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER ANAHEIM Arte Moreno has no illusions about what has gone wrong, and what could have been done, to keep his team from this miserable season. It s pretty hard to win when you have no pitching, the Angels owner said Friday, referring to the spate of injuries that shattered the club s pitching staff. While there are some cries from frustrated fans that the Angels need an organizational shakeup starting with the end of Mike Scioscia s 17-year run as the manager Moreno shrugged it off. I don t care who you put on the coaching staff, he said, if you don t have any pitching, it s pretty hard to win. Moreno addressed the Angels disappointing season, how they got here and how they can turn things around in an interview with the Southern California News Group. It was the first interview since early in spring training for the Angels owner. The Angels entered Friday s game with a record, having fallen farther under.500 this season that at any other time since he took over the team in The last Angels team to do this badly was in 1999, before Scioscia s first year. Scioscia, the longest tenured manager in the majors, still has two years left on the 10-year contract Moreno gave him, and he expects him to at least get to the ninth year in I m not going to say anything (definitive) because I haven t sat down with Billy (Eppler) or Mike, but I don t see any reason why he wouldn t be (back), Moreno said. Mike has been the winningest manager (in Angels history) and he won a world championship.... He has a contract. My expectation is he will be here, but I haven t sat down with him. Eppler, the first-year general manager whose opinion obviously counts less than Moreno s anyway, had earlier in the day said he was happy with Scioscia. I think he s done a great job, Eppler said Friday. He s dealt with multiple plates full of adversity and handled them with energy, passion. He s kept the guys who have stayed healthy all year optimistic, driven. I think that s the sign of a good leader. Assuming Scioscia is back, the question is what kind of a team he will have to manage in 2017.

August 20, 2016 Page 9 of 32 My belief is with a few moves, we can be highly competitive, Moreno said. What moves might those be? The free agent market is thin this winter, with a short list of potential impact hitters (Mark Trumbo, Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, possibly Yoenis Cespedes) and a small group of questionable pitchers (Doug Fister, Andrew Cashner, Scott Kazmir). There s really not a lot of free agent pitching, Moreno said. Free agent pitching costs a lot There s not a lot of left fielders. And obviously the left fielders everyone thought we should buy have had rough years. Moreno was referring to Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Alex Gordon, who have all underperformed this year. The Angels could have some money to spend this winter because C.J. Wilson and Jered Weaver s contracts are coming off the books although Moreno was clear that he hasn t ruled out re-signing Weaver. Moreno also was clear that he doesn t view the $189 million luxury tax threshold as a hard cap on his spending. Further, he insisted that he isn t making the baseball decisions. You surround yourself with good people and let the people make decisions, he said. At the end of the day, I write the checks. Sometimes I say yes to something I don t agree with. Very rarely do I say no. Besides the on-field questions, the Angels also face serious ballpark issues. The team recently announced that it had ended negotiations with Tustin about a new ballpark and had turned its attention back to Anaheim and Angel Stadium, which needs upgrades. Asked to characterize the talks with Anaheim, Moreno said: We re having some talks. We really haven t started negotiating. Moreno also said there are always other options besides Anaheim, although he wouldn t specify where those are, or even if they are limited to Orange County. Moreno also said he doesn t feel a groundswell of frustration from fans, either over the state of the ballpark or the state of the team. We could go for a walk and no one says, When are you going to do this or that? Moreno said. Baseball fans know that our pitching is down. The fans do. The kids, they just love to come to the ballpark. To us, it s about having a great experience, safe and clean and affordable.

August 20, 2016 Page 10 of 32 Longball hurts Jered Weaver in Angels loss to Yankees By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER ANAHEIM As he tries to hang on to his career, Jered Weaver reached a new low Friday night. Weaver gave up four homers in the Angels 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees, bringing his season total to 30 for the first time in his career. Weaver s previous worst was 27, and he matched that on the first batter of the game, when Jacoby Ellsbury hit one into the right-field seats. The Yankees had just a 2-0 lead before Weaver gave up three solo homers in the fifth, to Ronald Torreyes, Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez. That was all for the fourth game in Weaver s career in which he had allowed four homers, the first since April 6, The performance lifted his ERA to 5.47, well above last year s 4.64 mark that was his previous career worst. Nothing hurts worse than letting your teammates down, and I ve been doing that on a pretty consistent basis, so its definitely a tough pill to swallow, Weaver said. The 33-year-old Weaver said after his last outing, on Sunday in Cleveland, that he was thinking this could be his final season. Previously, however, he had expressed optimism that he could regain his form with more work on improving his flexibility. Before Friday s game, Manager Mike Scioscia said he hadn t closed the book on Weaver. I know Weave wants to pitch, Scioscia said. I think he understands the challenge in front of him of what he needs do in the winter. We all hope he gets there. Owner Arte Moreno, who spoke to the media for the first time since spring training on Friday, also said there could be a place for Weaver in the Angels future. He s been a great Angel, Moreno said. He s been a great guy, a big heart. While Weaver was struggling to get through the Yankees lineup, Masahiro Tanaka wasn t having much trouble with the Angels. He retired the first 11 batters of the game before Mike Trout s single in the fourth. Tanaka did not allow a run in 7-2/3 innings.

August 20, 2016 Page 11 of 32 The Angels also may have lost leadoff hitter Yunel Escobar, who was hit in the face by a foul ball while trying to bunt. Although X-rays showed no break, Scioscia said he was sore and the disabled list was a possibility. Whicker: Angels welcome Garret Anderson into their Hall of Fame Saturday By MARK WHICKER / STAFF COLUMNIST IRVINE Garret Anderson returns to Angel Stadium on Saturday night. He ll be in and out before somebody puts him on a lineup card. He ll go into the Angels Hall of Fame, which he s anticipating, and deliver a speech, which he s not. He played for the California, Anaheim and Los Angeles Angels. He is the franchise leader in hits, runs, doubles, total bases, games and runs batted in, and not by close margins. He did it with a quiet independence that fans and media didn t always understand. Unlike Tim Salmon, whose final Angel weekend was a celebration, Anderson was allowed to leave in 2009, and played a year for the Braves and then the Dodgers. When Joe Torre told him he was designated for assignment, Anderson left Dodger Stadium in about three minutes. He didn t play again. It felt like I was getting out of jail, he said. Don t misinterpret. Anderson played the game with heart. But a heart has compartments. People come up and say I had a great career and I say, can I give you a different perspective? Anderson said Monday morning, at a hotel coffee shop near his home. I failed seven times out of 10 (his career average was.293). So I wasn t really that good. It s a hard game and you have to deal with failure. I was a mess in the minors. If I struck out in my first at-bat, I was done. For a good player to become better, he has to put that aside. I miss the one-on-one with the pitchers. I miss competing against Pedro Martinez, a guy who could make you miss. Other than that, I don t miss anything. When it was over, I was going home to be with my family. The game was never my identity. Anderson hopes to tell Saturday night s fans that he appreciates them more than he ever expressed. His double was the winning hit in Game 7 of the 2002 World Series, and he clapped enthusiastically. Otherwise, he wore a neutral mask for 18 years. It s hard to think of any athlete so objective, who boxed his emotions so securely.

August 20, 2016 Page 12 of 32 As a kid in the Arizona Fall League, he got frustrated and jammed a bat so tightly into a slot that it popped out and hit a coach in the Achilles. Why should somebody else get hurt because I do something asinine? he said. From then on, he would jam his helmet or bat and hold it there. Anderson was the only child of divorced parents and sometimes rode in the truck with his dad, who delivered wine. He played basketball and baseball at Kennedy High in Granada Hills, and the Angels drafted him in the fourth round. In the low minors, he hit ninth, just behind a catcher named Troy Percival, who hit eighth. But Anderson always could put bat on ball. Former Angel George Hendrick took him aside and told hm to start hunting fastballs, to quicken the bat head, and Anderson homered 21 times in 99, 35 the next year. He had 56 and 49 doubles in consecutive years and also had four straight 100-RBI years. He wound up with 2,529 hits, 94th all time, surpassing Todd Helton, Joe Morgan, Pie Traynor and Jim Rice. I wouldn t have much value today, Anderson said. I was a swinger. I didn t walk. Nowadays there s a lot of walks, strikeouts and home runs. I don t find it as interesting. He also wondered if the Angels would ever win. We had a third-place mentality, he said. We d have good years but we wouldn t get the player we needed, so that s how we played. Then Mike Scioscia came in and after a while I realized, this guy really thinks we can win. There s no question he changed our culture. In 2002 we had guys who just felt that this was our time to win, if we ever were going to. Anderson worked on Angels TV for a while, but he realized he didn t want to be gone at night, and away from the family, if he wasn t playing. His son Trey plays baseball and basketball at Orange Lutheran. Daughter Brianne was a distingusihed gymnast and is a business major at Chapman. Her sister Bailey is an Orange Lutheran volleyball player. My wife (Teresa) was having to drive everybody everwhere, Anderson said. It was a good time for me to stop, because the kids were playing. The other student in the family is Anderson. He takes one course per session at Irvine Valley College. One professor went around the room to get everybody s ID. Garret Anderson, father, said Anderson, undetected but understood.

August 20, 2016 Page 13 of 32 Mike Scioscia gets high marks from Angels GM Billy Eppler for handling injuries By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER ANAHEIM The Angels have been so ravaged by injuries that Mike Scioscia has gotten more than merely a pass from general manager Billy Eppler. He s gotten high marks. I think he s done a great job, Eppler said Friday. He s dealt with multiple plates full of adversity and handled them with energy, passion. He s kept the guys who have stayed healthy all year optimistic, driven. I think that s the sign of a good leader. Scioscia has two years left on his contract following this season, and Eppler said he doesn t envision any changes this offseason, although the decision ultimately rests with owner Arte Moreno. I have no reason to believe Mike wouldn t be here managing our team next season, Eppler said. The Angels, who were heading into Friday s game with the New York Yankees, are further under.500 than they have been since before Scioscia took over in They suffered an 11-game losing streak, after never before losing even eight in a row under Scioscia. The team s obvious issue has been injuries, specifically to the pitching staff. Garrett Richards and Andrew Heaney, who started the first two games of the season, have been injured most the season. C.J. Wilson didn t pitch at all. Nick Tropeano pitched for about two months around one injury before he suffered another that led to Tommy John surgery. Given all that, Eppler thought back to something he once heard from Ernie Zampese, a well known NFL coach best known for his days with the San Diego Chargers. He used to always tell me, You have to have horses to pull the cart, Eppler said. Have to have horses to pull the cart or you can only do so much. Angels Notes: C.J. Cron expected back from the DL on Saturday By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER ANAHEIM C.J. Cron is likely to be activated on Saturday, just about six weeks after he broke his left hand. Cron had been sizzling before he got hurt, hitting.351 with six homers and a OPS in his last 20 games.

August 20, 2016 Page 14 of 32 Hopefully we ll get to see C.J. the way he was swinging the bat just before he got injured, Manager Mike Scioscia said. He had obviously found his swing. He was driving the ball well and swinging the bat to his potential. I don t know when it s going to show up. You hope it shows up tomorrow, but we definitely need him to lengthen our lineup. While Cron was out, the Angels split first base between Ji-Man Choi and Jefry Marte, with the former providing better defense and the latter better offense. MEYER IN THE MAJORS? The Angels have not ruled out newly acquired Alex Meyer coming up to start in the majors in September. Meyer has pitched twice so far in the rookie-level Arizona League. He has six strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. He has allowed one run, although that was the result of some questionable defense from the teenagers playing in that league. The Angels have scheduled Meyer to pitch again in Arizona on Monday, throwing about 40 to 50 pitches. If that goes well, he would then pitch five days later at Triple-A, throwing about the same number of pitches. The Angels want to get Meyer to at least 75 pitches in the minors and then they will consider starting him in the majors. Because of expanded rosters in September, the Angels would have enough bullpen depth to cover Meyer if he can t go as deep as a typical starter. Meyer was once one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, but injuries have caused his stock to drop. The Angels acquired him, taking a gamble on his upside, in an Aug. 1 deal for Hector Santiago. ALSO Garrett Richards has continued throwing since Monday, when he was cleared to begin a throwing program. The Angels are hoping Richards can proceed enough to pich in the instructional league, but they won t push him. He is trying to avoid Tommy John surgery Cam Bedrosian took a day off from throwing on Friday. Bedrosian, who is on the disabled list with tendinitis in his finger, is going to take a little time, Scioscia said. Hopefully he s moving in the right direction. Hal Morris, who had been the Angels pro scouting director, left the organization to take a job with Fantex, GM Billy Eppler said. Fantex is an investment company that essentially sells stock in athletes futures

August 20, 2016 Page 15 of 32 Eppler said he is still conducting interviews for the scouting director job. The Angels removed Ric Wilson from the position this month. Wilson is still deciding if he wants to stay in the organization, Eppler said. On deck: Yankees at Angels, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. By JEFF FLETCHER / STAFF WRITER Where: Angel Stadium TV: Fox Sports West Did you know? Yankees starter Luis Cessa was 9 years old when Angels starter Ricky Nolasco was drafted. THE PITCHERS ANGELS RHP RICKY NOLASCO (4-10, 5.13) Vs. Yankees: 1-1, 5.40 At Angel Stadium: 1-2, 6.56 Hates to face: Brian McCann, 21 for 65 (.323) Loves to face: Brett Gardner, 1 for 6 (.167) YANKEES RHP LUIS CESSA (2-0, 5.30) Vs. Angels: First game At Angel Stadium: First game Hates to face: None Loves to face: None FROM ANGELS.COM Weaver set back by four Yankees homers By Austin Laymance / MLB.com ANAHEIM -- A difficult start from Jered Weaver on Friday night against the Yankees did little to offer any clarity regarding his uncertain future with the Angels, the only organization he's ever known. Weaver, a free agent at the end of the season, surrendered four home runs and was charged with five runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 7-0 defeat in the opener of a three-game series at Angel Stadium. The four home runs allowed matched the most he's given up in a start in his 11 seasons with the Angels.

August 20, 2016 Page 16 of 32 "Couldn't keep the ball in the yard," said Weaver, who last allowed four homers in a game on April 6, 2014, against the Astros. "Didn't fool too many people tonight." Like much of the Angels this season, things typically haven't gone right for Weaver. Friday's loss dropped him to 8-11, and his ERA rose to "Nothing hurts worse than letting your teammates down, and I've been doing that on a pretty consistent basis, so it's definitely a tough pill to swallow," said Weaver. It's not clear where Weaver fits into the Angels' plans moving forward. "We'll see how the next six weeks transpires and we'll have time for that when we get into October, November, December, etc. etc.," Angels general manager Billy Eppler said of Weaver potentially coming back in The club needs pitching next year, with both Nick Tropeano and Andrew Heaney likely out for the entire 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this summer. Garrett Richards is a question mark, too, as he's trying to avoid the same procedure as he works back from a UCL injury to his pitching elbow. Weaver has made at least 24 starts in each of the last 10 seasons. He made 19 starts as a rookie in "Right now, having guys that can toe the rubber and can get us pitches into a game are welcome additions at this point," Eppler said. Angels manager Mike Scioscia believes Weaver can still be effective with a fastball that sits in the mid 80s. That was not the case on Friday night against the Yankees. Weaver got off to an inauspicious start, as the third pitch he made to Jacoby Ellsbury was ripped to right field for the Yankees' first leadoff homer of the season. Weaver retired six of the next seven batters, but things turned south again in the third, as the Yankees scratched across another run with a double and single to open the frame. Weaver was hit hard in the fifth. Ronald Torreyes led off with a homer left, and two batters later Didi Gregorius took Weaver deep to right. The Angels' defense did its part, with center fielder Mike Trout fielding a double off the scoreboard and starting a relay to nail Gary Sanchez trying to stretch a triple.

August 20, 2016 Page 17 of 32 But the good feelings didn't last long, as Brian McCann followed with a towering homer over the same scoreboard to end Weaver's night. "At times, he made some really good pitches, but he was having trouble getting some pitches where he wanted to, and those guys didn't miss them," Scioscia said. "We'll just turn the page on that one." Weaver sounded like it wouldn't be so simple to put this start out of his mind. "It's going to be tough," he said. "I have five days to dwell on it and see what happens after that." The Angels have six more weeks with Weaver in the rotation. Beyond that, nothing is certain. "You never know what the offseason is going to bring, but I know Weav wants to pitch," Scioscia said. "I think he understands the challenge in front of him, of what he needs to do in the winter, and we all certainly hope he gets there. As far as where he's going to be or what the situation's going to be, nobody has a crystal ball, and free agency gets complicated. We're going to take this one step at a time." Angels come up empty against Yanks Tanaka By Jack Baer and Austin Laymance / MLB.com ANAHEIM -- Home runs came for the Yankees from both the top and bottom of the lineup, plus multiple places in between, as they shut out the Angels, 7-0, on Friday night at Angel Stadium to open a three-game series. Jacoby Ellsbury got things going with a homer to right on the third pitch of the night from Angels starter Jered Weaver. Ninth-place hitter Ronald Torreyes led off the fifth with the first homer of his big league career, while No. 2 hitter Didi Gregorius and cleanup man Brian McCann also went deep against Weaver in the frame. Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka earned the win, striking out nine without issuing a walk over 7 2/3 innings. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing consecutive singles to Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in the fourth. Tanaka then recorded seven outs in a row before another Trout single leading off the seventh. "I think he used all his pitches," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Thought he had a good fastball, he used that extremely well. Thought he used some early curveballs, split was good, slider, he had everything."

August 20, 2016 Page 18 of 32 Weaver was charged with five runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He was removed after the home run to McCann. Friday's start marked the first time Weaver allowed four or more homers in a game since April 6, 2014, against the Astros. "Couldn't keep the ball in the yard," said Weaver, whose 6.24 career ERA against the Yankees is his highest against any American League club. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED From top...: Ellsbury gave an early sign of things to come in the first at-bat of the game. The outfielder took an 83-mph two-seamer 368 feet into the right-field corner to spot the Yankees the only run they would need and give him his fifth long ball of the season. It was also the first leadoff homer of the season for the Yankees.... to bottom: Not only was Torreyes' homer in the fifth inning the first of his career, it also added into the first four-hit game of his career. Not many would have foreseen such a night for the rookie third baseman, but Starlin Castro predicted at least a homer after watching Torreyes go deep to center in batting practice. "My job is to come to the ballpark ready to play," Torreyes said through an interpreter. "Although I don't play every day, once I get the opportunity to play, I want to do my best." Two for Trout: Trout had two of the Angels' five hits off Tanaka. It was his 36th game with multiple hits this season, but he came up empty when the club really need it. Trout had a chance to get the Angels on the board in the eighth, batting with two outs and the bases loaded after Tanaka left the game, but he struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch from Adam Warren. Escobar exits: Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar was removed from the game in the fourth inning after fouling a pitch off his face on a bunt attempt. He was replaced by Gregorio Petit, who made two tough plays on sharp grounders against his former team. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said it's possible Escobar could go on the disabled list, though preliminary X-rays came back negative. "He's sore," Scioscia said. "We're certainly going to check and see where he is tonight and tomorrow. He's going to be sore for a while." QUOTABLE "I talked to him before the game started and said, 'Hey, about that guy, you're supposed to go out there and hit his offspeed, but be ready for the fastball. You're going to see his offspeed,' and that's what he does." -- Castro, on Torreyes' four-hit game "Nothing hurts worse than letting your teammates down, and I've been doing that on a pretty consistent basis, so it's definitely a tough pill to swallow." -- Weaver, on his performance

August 20, 2016 Page 19 of 32 WHAT'S NEXT Yankees: Twenty-four-year-old Luis Cessa (2-0, 5.30 ERA) will make the first start of his career after spending the season moving between the Yankees' bullpen and the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre rotation. The right-hander has recorded 11 strikeouts and six walks in 18 2/3 big league innings. Angels: Ricky Nolasco (4-10, 5.13 ERA) takes the mound for the Angels in the second game of this three-game series at Angel Stadium. Nolasco is still looking for his first win in an Angels uniform, going 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA in three starts since coming over in a Trade Deadline deal with the Twins. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. PT. Escobar exits after fouling Tanaka pitch off his face By Austin Laymance / MLB.com ANAHEIM -- Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar was removed in the fourth inning of Friday night's 7-0 loss to the Yankees after fouling a pitch off his face on a bunt attempt. X-rays were negative and he is considered day to day. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said "it's a possibility" Escobar goes on the disabled list. "He's sore," Scioscia said. "We're certainly going to check and see where he is tonight and tomorrow. He's going to be sore for a while." Escobar squared to bunt against Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka leading off the fourth, fouling off an 0-1 pitch. The ball caromed off the bat and hit Escobar in the nose and cheek, knocking off his helmet. He immediately headed into the Angels dugout as the training staff and Scioscia attended to him. Escobar was replaced by Gregorio Petit, who grounded out and remained in the game at third base. Petit finished the game 1-for-3 and made two tough plays on sharp ground balls. "Greg hasn't played a lot of third, but he works out there, and it's not easy to get thrown into a game," Scioscia said. "He looked good, handled himself well and made some nice plays." Escobar struck out swinging in his first at-bat. He's hitting.320 on the season, which ranks second in the American League behind Houston's Jose Altuve (.365).

August 20, 2016 Page 20 of 32 Cron poised to return from broken hand By Austin Laymance / MLB.com ANAHEIM -- C.J. Cron was back with the Angels on Friday afternoon, and he's expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday's game against the Yankees, manager Mike Scioscia said. Cron has been sidelined since July 9, the result of a fractured left hand. The first baseman played six rehab games with Triple-A Salt Lake over the past week, going 3-for-20 (.150) with a double and three walks. Cron went through a full pregame workout Friday, including fielding drills and batting practice on the field. "If he comes out of his workout today -- he had a great workout -- we'll look to activate him tomorrow," Scioscia said before Friday's series opener against the Yankees. The Angels could use Cron's bat in the lineup. The team entered Friday ranked 27th in the Majors with an average of 3.9 runs per game in August. Cron hit.370 with five home runs and three doubles in his last 11 games prior to being injured in Baltimore on July 8, when he was hit by a pitch on the left hand that resulted in a fracture. Cron had surgery on July 12. "Hopefully we're going to get to see C.J. the way he was swinging the bat just before he was injured," Scioscia said. "He had obviously found his swing and was driving the ball well and swinging the bat to his potential. You don't know when that is going to show up. You hope it shows up tomorrow. We definitely need him to lengthen our lineup and get in the middle of it." Cron is hitting.278/.333/.475 with 11 homers and 50 RBIs in 77 games this year. In his absence, Jefry Marte and Ji-Man Choi have split playing time at first base. Worth Noting Garrett Richards (right elbow UCL injury) played catch from 60 feet again on Friday and reported no issues. He's trying to avoid Tommy John surgery and there is hope Richards progresses enough to pitch in the Instructional League. Reliever Cam Bedrosian (right middle finger flexor tendinitis) has started a throwing program, though he took a day off on Friday. "With Cam, it might take a little bit of time, there's going to be some days down, so hopefully he's moving in the right direction, we feel he is," Scioscia said.

August 20, 2016 Page 21 of 32 Hal Morris has left his position as director of pro scouting to take a job with Fantex, an investment company geared toward professional athletes, Angels general manager Billy Eppler said. Eppler said he would look at internal and external candidates to fill the position. Eppler said he is currently holding interviews for the scouting director job. The Angels removed Ric Wilson from the position earlier this month, and Wilson is still deciding whether he wants to remain with the organization, according to Eppler. Nolasco looks to spoil Cessa s first big league start By Jack Baer / MLB.com Yankees rookie right-hander Luis Cessa will make the first start of his career when he takes on 11-year veteran Ricky Nolasco and the Angels on Saturday at Angel Stadium. Cessa has operated out of the bullpen in his intermittent time with the Yankees this season. Not a month has passed that hasn't seen the 24-year-old either called up or sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 18 2/3 big league innings, Cessa holds a 5.30 ERA with 11 strikeouts and six walks. Facing Cessa will be Nolasco, who has made 271 starts for four teams in his career. A Trade Deadline acquisition from Minnesota, the righty Nolasco is 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA in three starts with the Angels. "He's definitely pitched better," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "There's more in Ricky than he's shown, and hopefully we're going to see it." Things to know about this game Yankees catcher/dh Brian McCann has seen plenty of Nolasco in his career, going all the way back to the six-plus years the two spent in the NL East together. In 68 career plate appearances against the right-hander, McCann is hitting /.769 with eight homers. After going 8-for-9 in the final two games of the Mariners series, Yunel Escobar's.320 batting average ranks second in the American League. Jose Altuve (.365) tops the league by a wide margin. Both Brett Gardner and Chase Headley sat out Friday due to ankle issues, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he thinks they could be back in the lineup Saturday.

August 20, 2016 Page 22 of 32 GM Eppler expects Scioscia back next season By Austin Laymance / MLB.com ANAHEIM -- Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Friday he has no reason to believe Mike Scioscia won't return as manager next season. "I think he's done a great job," Eppler said before the Angels opened a three-game series against the Yankees. "He's dealt with multiple plates full of adversity and handled them with energy, passion. He's kept the guys who have stayed healthy all year optimistic, driven. I think that's the sign of a good leader." The Angels entered play Friday last in the American League West at The Angels have been hit hard by injuries, with starting pitchers Garrett Richards, Andrew Heaney, Nick Tropeano and C.J. Wilson all out for the season. Of those four, only Richards was able to avoid season-ending surgery. Wilson did not pitch at all this year. "You have to have horses to pull the cart," Eppler said, harking back to something he learned as a youngster from longtime NFL coach Ernie Zampese. "If your horses get hurt or can't pull the cart for a little while... You have to have the horses to pull the cart. We can only do so much." Scioscia is in his 17th season as manager of the Angels, and he's the longest-tenured manager in the Major Leagues. He signed a 10-year extension that runs through 2018 in January "I have no reason to believe Mike wouldn't be here managing our team next season," Eppler said. Of course, the decision ultimately belongs to owner Arte Moreno. Scioscia, 57, is by far the most successful manager in Angels history. Since taking over the position in 2000, eight years after his final season playing in the Majors, Scioscia has guided the franchise to its only World Series championship and six AL West titles, including five from Entering Friday, Scioscia had 1,467 wins -- 24th most all-time -- and a.541 winning percentage.

August 20, 2016 Page 23 of 32 Angels HOF induction to shine spotlight on Anderson Team s career leader in several offensive categories will be honored Saturday By Marcia C. Smith / MLB.com Garret Anderson has always found more comfort in the shadows than in the spotlight. He was a reluctant superstar during his 17 Major League seasons -- his first 15 with the Angels, who will induct him into their Hall of Fame before Saturday's game at 6:35 p.m. PT vs. the Yankees. Anderson will become the 14th player to join the Angels Hall of Fame. He was one of the most productive hitters in franchise history, wearing the Halos' No. 16 from and quietly climbing to the top of the club's all-time lists in games (2,013), at-bats (7,989), runs (1,024), hits (2,368), total bases (3,743), extra-base hits (796), doubles (489) and RBIs (1,292). Anderson's bases-clearing three-run double vs. the Giants was the decisive blow in Game 7 of the 2002 World Series. "That's my proudest achievement, that championship," he said, "because I could share it. I was part of a team that put the Angels on the map." Anderson wrapped up his career with the Braves in 2009 and the Dodgers in '10, with his final game coming on Aug. 6, He retired with a.293 career batting average, 287 home runs, three All-Star Game appearances ('02, '03 and '05), two American League Silver Slugger Awards ('02 and '03), and a World Series ring with the Angels in '02. Anderson didn't leave baseball. It told him his career was over. "It made the decision [to retire] easy when all 30 teams didn't call," he said. So Anderson gracefully "moved on," making the announcement in a conference call, without any fanfare or a farewell tour. "I never sought the spotlight, and I really struggle with the spotlight," said Anderson, 44, from his home in Irvine, Calif. "But getting this [Angels Hall of Fame] honor does remind me of baseball. I'm very appreciative of the honor and thankful for the time I've had playing and having been an Angel." Anderson's call to the Angels' Hall came a few months ago from team president John Carpino and owner Arte Moreno. It went to his voice mail, and Anderson had to call them back to learn the news. "The inclusion of Garret into the Angels Hall of Fame will be a special moment for our organization and a fan base fortunate to watch his numerous contributions in an Angels

August 20, 2016 Page 24 of 32 uniform," said Moreno, who has welcomed seven players and the 2002 World Series team into the club's Hall since he bought the team in '03. "Garret was the model of consistency during his 15 seasons with the Angels, and we are proud he will be joining this distinguished group of Angels." Moreno congratulated Anderson personally when the former outfielder was most recently at Angel Stadium, which still feels like home. Anderson has been working on his speech this week, reflecting on the career and the team that selected him in the fourth round of the 1990 Draft out of Kennedy High in Granada Hills, Calif. For Anderson, baseball has been in his past "in a space like something in a box on a shelf," he said. "Baseball -- it's almost like I never did it. It was fleeting, like that moment when you open gifts on Christmas. Once it's over, it's gone." Anderson's transition into life after baseball has been smooth, because being a player "wasn't who I am as a person," he said. "It was never my identity." Anderson's baseball memorabilia -- with the exception of the four framed jerseys in his weight room and the half-dozen photos in the family's game room -- is buried in his garage. He hasn't picked up a ball or glove since playing catch with his son, Trey (Garret Anderson III) before the start of this past high school baseball season. When Spring Training has arrived each year, even his first one as an ex-player in 2011, "I never once, since I stopped playing and the day I was released by L.A., wanted to go back, not one iota," Anderson said. "I was ready to move forward in my life and get back to what I had missed while playing." After all those years of the baseball routine, Anderson quickly embraced and cherished family life with wife, Teresa, and his three children, Brianne, a Chapman University sophomore; Bailey, a high school senior; and Trey, a high school sophomore. Anderson helped with homework. He shuttled Brianne to gymnastics, Bailey to volleyball and Trey to basketball and baseball practices. "My routine now is whatever routine my kids have," he said, laughing. "My only hobby is my family." And Anderson has gone back to college, taking one general education course per semester at Irvine Valley College, because he needed the mental stimulation and values getting a degree. He made quick work of the math classes and is now deep into reading and writing.

August 20, 2016 Page 25 of 32 Anderson is hardly recognized these days. He's still quiet, polite, shy and "introverted," which led some fans to think this understated gentleman ballplayer was aloof during his playing days. When Anderson goes to Trey's baseball practices, he's just another proud baseball dad. Trey's teammates were too young to remember the slugger "G.A.," who steadily anchored the left field that has become a Bermuda Triangle for position players in recent seasons. "Some fans will still come up to me," Anderson said, "And when they do, I'm happy to share the stories or talk about the team." When fans ask about this season's struggles, Anderson points to the injuries that have devastated the pitching staff. He recalls his 2003 season with the defending champion Halos, when he was one of the few position players not to log time on the disabled list. "Sometimes you just got to get through the rough years," Anderson said. "And think about the highlights each day and the promise of the future." On Saturday, this Angels great will get the much-deserved spotlight for his contributions to the franchise's history. And then Anderson will slip back into the shadows, as always, with grace. FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Yankees 4 homers back Tanaka in 7-0 win over Angels ANAHEIM, Calif. -- He started brilliantly, paused for only the smallest of moments, and then just kept rolling on. The Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka is in the midst a special kind of stretch, none of which had to be explained to the Los Angeles Angels after he pitched New York to an easy 7-0 victory Friday night. Tanaka retired his first 11 hitters, gave up two singles, and then just kept frustrating the Angels for the rest of his 7 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits, struck out nine, and for the fourth consecutive game did not walk a batter. "We faced him before, but tonight he was a little crisper and had his pitches working," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He pitched ahead in the count and threw a good game for them." The Yankees supported Tanaka (10-4) with four home runs off Jered Weaver, solos shots by Jacoby Ellsbury, Ronald Torreyes, Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann.
