Lightning Strikes! Long Island Storm Players Make Commitments to Play College Baseball in 2011 The Storm Baseball Academy would like to congratulate its Class of 2011 players that have made early college commitments. The Storm Organization had another successful season in 2010, with 6 teams competing in college showcase tournaments all over the country. The winter training sessions, summer practices, team meetings and travel culminated with numerous players committing to play college baseball. This clearly shows that we are doing the right thing for the kids here at the Storm Academy, said Storm President Mike Leiderman. We take great pride in helping our players find the right college and baseball program. Congratulations to all of our Storm players who will be bringing their game to the next level. Here are a few players who have made early commitments
KYLE DEMEO READY TO ROAR WITH GOLDEN LIONS, COMMITS TO DOWLING COLLEGE Storm Academy and Carey Short Stop/Pitcher Kyle Demeo made a commitment to the Golden Lions at Dowling College. Storm coach John Mangieri stated "Kyle has been a big time player in the Storm Organization for the past 3 years. He not only is one the best position players in the organization, but one of the best pitchers as well and makes everything look easy." Storm hitting instructor Nick Clark says, Kyle is a player that can change the game with his bat, his glove, his speed or his leadership skills. His baseball makeup is off the charts!" Division II East Coast Conference
JOE DUARTE SELECTS TRINITY COLLEGE Storm and Chaminade High School Outfielder Joe Duarte will play for college baseball for national power Trinity College. Joe has been one of the more physically gifted players I have coached, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. He has all 5 tools and has worked very hard over the last 4 years to improve his mental approach to the game. All of his hard work has paid off as he had a break out junior year. I see continued success for Joe in his college career. Division III NESCAC Conference
MIKE FERRANTI SET TO PLAY FOR HOFSTA PRIDE Storm and Chaminade High School Outfielder Mike Ferranti has committed to play for Patrick Anderson s Hofstra Pride. Michael is considered one of the best defensive centerfielders in the area, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. He projects as a great top of the order guy in college and is one of the best athletes in our organization. With his athletic ability, speed and defensive tools, Michael will prove to be a great asset to the Hofstra program. Division I Colonial Athletic Conference
GALLAGHER ACCEPTS OFFER TO PLAY AT FAIRFIELD Storm and Chaminade High School Pitcher/Third Baseman Andrew Gallagher will play his college baseball for the Stags of Fairfield University under associate head coach Bill Currier. Andrew is a rare combination player and will be given a chance to be play twoways at the Division I level, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. On the mound Andrew is a bulldog who pounds the strike zone with three different pitches. Offensively, he has a sweet swing from the left side of the plate and possesses the physical tools and mental toughness to succeed at the college level, said Storm coach Ciro Ambrosio. Division I MAAC Conference
SCOTT GOLDBERG COMMITS TO COLBY COLLEGE Storm and Chaminade Pitcher Scott Goldberg will play his college baseball at Colby College under head coach Dale Plummer. Scotty has probably shown the most improvement of any player over the last four years, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. He is without doubt one of the hardest workers in our organization. All the effort has really started to pay off. A recent 6-inch growth spurt has helped him develop into a top pitching prospect. He has loose arm action and a devastating knuckle drop, which is his out pitch. As he continues to grow into his new frame, Scotty will be a staple in Colby s rotation in college. Division III NESCAC Conference
REMY JANCO A DUKE BLUE DEVIL Storm and Half Hollow Hills West Southpaw Pitcher Remy Janco has committed to play with the Duke Blue Devils. Remy Janco is a tremendous student-athlete who has dominated both on and off the field, said Storm coach John Mangieri. He has proven that size doesn't matter with his 5'8 frame, but displays a fastball that has been clocked as high as 88mph to go along with plus changeup. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to see him progress into a solid left handed pitching prospect. I know with his work ethic he will be very successful at the collegiate level under Coach McNally at Duke. Division I Atlantic Coast Conference
MEEKINS CHOOSES D3 POWERHOUSE TRINITY Storm and Xavier hurler Sean Meekins will play college baseball at Trinity College. Sean has not even begun to reach his potential, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. He is a 6'4 right hander with explosive stuff. Sean probably has the best breaking ball in the organization and topped out at 86 this past summer. He was a lights out closer all summer shutting the door at some of the best tournaments in the country. Meeks was also closing for Xavier High School this past season and helped lead them on their improbable run to the City title game. Sean turned down a few Division I overtures to help Trinity pursue another National title and get one of the best educations in the country. He has an awesome demeanor and is a favorite of his teammates. Division III NESCAC Conference
BEN MOYET TO PLAY AT CCNY Storm and St. Anthony s High School Catcher Ben Moyet will play college baseball for City College of New York and Coach Dave Yorke. Ben has the rawest power in our organization, said Storm coach Ciro Ambrosio. He has hit several balls this summer that left players and bystanders watching in awe. Ben has been working hard at refining his swing and becoming more consistent at the plate. He also has a bulldog mentality behind the plate and has shown that he can handle and lead a pitching staff. Ben will be a great addition to CCNY. Division III CUNYAC Conference
BRENDAN MULLIGAN CHOOSES TO JOIN THE PRIDE Storm and Chaminade High School Pitcher Brendan Mulligan has decided to play his college baseball at Hofstra University. Brendan is a 6'5 lefty who topped out at 87 this summer and has unlimited potential, said Storm pitching coach Vinny Colosuanno. His long loose frame and easy arm action put him on the radar of several area pro scouts who are anxious to see how he progresses. Brendan's best days are ahead of him and his future is bright. Division I Colonial Athletic Conference
TYLER MURPHY SOARS LIKE AN EAGLE, COMMITS TO NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL Storm and Islip High School Outfielder Tyler Murphy has committed to play baseball at North Carolina Central for head coach Henry White. Coach Shaun Manning says, Murph is the consummate team player. In my opinion Tyler Murphy is the most fundamentally sound player in our program. He does the little things to win games that you won t see in the box score. He has a good bat, speed, knows how to play the game and can play all three outfield positions. Tyler is an honor roll student and will be a great addition to the Eagles program. Division I Mideastern Athletic Conference
POHALSKI WILL PLAY FOR NEW YORK TECH Storm and Chaminade catcher Andrew Pohalski has committed to play at New York Tech. Andrew brings a tremendous amount of baseball intangibles and instincts to the table, said his Storm and High School Coach Shaun Manning. Ski is a player capable of winning a game for you in many ways, whether it s getting a key stolen base, putting down the perfect bunt or calling a great game behind the plate. Andrew has the ability to play all nine positions on the field and can do something to help you win at all of them. He is the type of player you hate to play against, but love to have as a teammate. If you had nine guys with Andrew's mental toughness and refusal to lose, you would be on the winning side of a lot of games. Division I Great West Conference
KEN RITCHIE TO PLAY AT UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER Storm and Chaminade High School Catcher/First Baseman Ken Ritchie has committed to attend the University of Rochester and will play baseball for head coach Joe Reina. Kenny has been one of my favorite players to coach over the last 4 years, said Storm and Chaminade coach Shaun Manning. He has natural power you cannot teach and will hit 30+ home runs in his college career. Kenny was also one of the hardest workers in our strength and conditioning program over the past 4 years. He has a great demeanor and a favorite among his teammates. Division III Liberty League Conference
THOMAS ROULIS GOES GREEN, COMMITS TO DARTMOUTH COLLEGE Storm Academy second baseman and Chaminade High School product Thomas Roulis is bringing his talents to Dartmouth College and head coach Bob Whalen. Roulis led off for the Storm this summer and through his play attracted a lot of attention from several Division I programs. Storm coach Shaun Manning stated, "Tommy was one of the top players in our entire program this summer, showing everyone that he is a first class defensive player and outstanding hitter with excellent speed. He has also shown the ability to excel in the classroom, posting a 98.7 average. In my 10 years of coaching, I have not had a player with a better work ethic or with better character. In the end, Dartmouth is where Tommy wanted to attend school. Storm coach Vinny Colosuanno told us, "Thomas Roulis will be a big time player at the next level." Division I Ivy League
SCHMIDT COMMITS TO SEWANEE Storm and Chaminade pitcher Adam Schmidt has committed to Sewanee University in Tennessee. Adam is probably the most versatile starter we have in the organization, said Storm and Chaminade coach Shaun Manning. He has started games, closed games and come in for middle relief. Schmitty is the true definition of a workhorse. The more he throws the better he is. Adam has come a long way in his development. He started as an outfielder with a cannon for an arm and has developed into a polished college pitching prospect. His other great asset is his mound demeanor. You can t tell if he is winning by 10 runs or losing by 10 runs. This ability to block everything out and have a short memory will help him succeed at the next level. Adam throws a heavy fastball and mixes in an above average changeup, with a cutter and curve ball. He works fast and pounds the strike zone. Adam sorted through several offers and chose to take his game south to Sewanee University. Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
DAN SULLIVAN RUNS WITH THE BIG DOGS, COMMITS TO SIENA Storm and Calhoun outfielder Dan Sullivan has committed to play college baseball at Siena College for head coach Tony Rossi. Dan is an offensive weapon with great speed, said Storm coach John Mangieri. Speed is something you can t teach and Sully has it. What makes him even more dangerous is that he swings from the left side. He is the ideal leadoff man. Defensively, he uses that speed to his advantage and is an exceptional outfielder. Division I MAAC Conference
JAKE THOMAS A BEARCAT, COMMITS TO BINGHAMTON Storm Academy catcher and Calhoun High School product Jake Thomas (2010 Diamond Award Finalist) has committed to play baseball at Binghamton University. The Bearcats coaching staff made him one of their top recruits of its 2011 recruiting class and expects him to compete for a starting position as a freshman. "I am very happy for Jake and his entire family, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. Jake is a tremendous young man and a fierce competitor on the baseball diamond. He swings the bat exceptionally well and possesses great speed, which makes him a rare commodity as a catcher. JT has been one of our most consistent hitters this entire year and hits for power. Defensively, he is very versatile having played catcher, outfield and third base for us, but will enter Binghamton as their top catching prospect. Jake is solid behind the plate and has a quick release with good arm strength. This is a great pickup for Coach Sinicki and the Bearcats." America East Conference Division I
ERIC TRUSS CHOOSES MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE Storm and Chaminade High School Pitcher Eric Truss has verbally committed to play at Middlebury for Bob Smith. Eric has one of the highest baseball IQs in our organization, said Storm coach Shaun Manning. He truly understands the art of pitching. Every pitch he throws has a purpose, setting up a pitch latter in the at-bat. This is a skill that is almost impossible to teach. Eric throws three pitches for strikes and shows the ability to change speed and location which will make him successful at the next level. Division III NESCAC Conference
RICKY VAN ALLEN COMMITS TO ADELPHI Storm Baseball RHP Ricky Van Allen has decided that he will be bringing his powerful right arm to Adelphi University and coach Dom Scala. The Panthers received the news that the 6-foot, 6 inch Trinity product is on his way to campus beginning in the fall of Storm coach John Mangieri described Ricky as "a player that has just touched upon his potential. If Ricky continues to develop and work hard with his size and strength, he could be dominating at the next level." Van Allen has already been clocked as high as 90 MPH with his fastball. If that wasn't enough, Ricky also is an excellent first baseman for the Storm and will be given the opportunity to continue being an everyday player in college as well. Division II Northeast 10 Conference
NICK VENIER CHOOSES SAINT ROSE Storm Baseball/King Park High School RHP Nick Venier has committed to Saint Rose in Albany. Nick has a strong build and projects well, said Storm coach and pitching instructor John Mangieri. He is a future pro prospect who has the ability to throw 90+ with a good split finger. Nick s future looks bright. Division II Northeast 10 Conference
WEISS HEADS TO FAIRFIELD Storm Baseball/King Park High School LHP Kevin Weissheir will pitch for the Stags of Fairfield University. Kevin is a pure bulldog on the mound, said Storm and Chaminade coach Shaun Manning. Every time he takes the hill, he will give you a chance to win the game. Kevin uses an 85 mph fastball and a variety of off-speed pitches to keep teams off balance. He has a high Baseball IQ and is one of our hardest workers. He has the ability and chance to be a dominant starting pitcher at the Division I level. Kevin is also a standout in the classroom and is a great role model for the younger players at Chaminade. He is one of the nicest and most polite kids I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. Division I MAAC Conference
