1 FOR RELEASE: Immediately Wachovia Conference Cup Winners Announced Wachovia, a Wells Fargo company, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competitions for the sports season. The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual conference. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification. Class 1-A Conference Results: Carolina 1-A: Rosewood wins the Conference Cup, dominating the spring season with championships in men s track, men s tennis, and men s golf. Princeton comes in second thanks to a league title in softball. Two top finishes, one in women s outdoor track and field and one in baseball, earn Ayden-Grifton third in the conference. Conference Standings: Rosewood 67, Princeton 57.5, Ayden-Grifton 54.5, Goldsboro 47, Spring Creek 37, North Duplin 28. Coastal Plains 1-A: Southwest Onslow passes previous first-place Dixon with championships in men s golf and women s soccer and takes the Conference Cup. Dixon finishes in second with a spring championship in baseball. Lejeune comes in third, finishing first in women s outdoor track and field. Four Rivers 1-A: Titles in softball, women s outdoor track and field, and a tie for first in baseball propel Riverside into first and earn it the Conference Cup. Manteo, previously in first, drops to second and Northside holds on to its third-place position. Smoky Mountain 1-A: Murphy surges from fourth in the conference to take the top spot and the Conference Cup due to an impressive spring season consisting of championships in women s outdoor track and field, baseball, and a tie for first in softball. Tar Roanoke 1-A: The Conference Cup winner is North Edgecombe, which finishes first in both men s and women s outdoor track and field. Gates County takes second thanks to conference crowns in baseball and softball. A second-place performance in women s outdoor track and field as well as a third-place finish in men s outdoor track and field earn KIPP Pride third in the conference. Conference Standings: North Edgecombe 485, Gates County 410, KIPP Pride 400, Northampton County-East 355, Northampton County-West 340, Southeast Halifax 335, Weldon 260. Tideland 1-A: In a tight conference with almost every team having a shot at the Conference Cup, Columbia is able to take it, finishing second in softball and baseball. Creswell, finishing first in softball and second in baseball, and Mattamuskeet, winning a title in baseball, finish right behind Columbia in second and third, respectively. Conference Standings: Columbia 25, Creswell 23, Mattamuskeet 21, Cape Hatteras 20, Ocracoke 4. Tri-County 1-A: Pender captures the Conference Cup, maintaining its first-place lead from the winter with a tie for first in softball with second-place overall finisher Union, which also finished second in baseball. Lakewood rounds out the top three thanks to a second-place performance in men s outdoor track and field. Conference Standings: Pender 73.5, Union 70, Lakewood 67, Heide Trask 63, Wallace-Rose Hill 59, James Kenan 58, Midway 58, Hobbton Yadkin Valley 1-A: Albemarle, aided by a balanced spring season performance, was able to hold off the rest of the field to win the Conference Cup. North Rowan and Gray Stone Day finish how they left off in the winter, numbers two and three in the conference respectively. North Rowan tied for first in baseball while Gray Stone finished second in men s tennis, men s golf, and women s soccer. Carrboro finished first in men s golf and tied for first in women s soccer, while Cedar Ridge won a championship in men s outdoor track and field, and finished second in women s outdoor track and field and men s golf. The North Carolina School of Science and Math rounds out the top three, tying for first in women s soccer with Carrboro, and finishing first in women s tennis. Wilkes Central finishes closely behind in second thanks to championships in baseball and men s tennis. Starmount finishes third with a conference crown in men s outdoor track and field. Mount Airy is third with second-place finishes in men s outdoor track and field and men s tennis. Grimsley finishes in third with runner-up performances in women s soccer, men s golf, and men s tennis.
