3 2018 Women s Championship Retrospectives 3A Women: Northern Guilford claims second straight with win over Jacksonville RALEIGH, N.C. Northern Guilford led the whole way and pushed out to as much as a 19-point lead in the first half, as the Nighthawks powered their way past Jacksonville to the 3A Women s Basketball State Championship. The Nighthawks earned their second straight State Championship with the victory. Northern Guilford is used to tight games in the State Finals, losing in heart-breaking fashion two years ago to Freedom before edging Hickory Ridge last year. This year s Nighthawks didn t need much drama as they outscored Jacksonville 17-9 in the first quarter and outran them in the second to lead by 17 at the break. Kassie Robakiewicz shot five of six from beyond the arc and nine of 13 from the floor as she racked up 24 points, a pair of assists and two rebounds. Robakiewicz was named the Kay Yow 3A Women s Basketball State Championship Game Most Valuable Player. Her teammate and last year s championship game M.V.P. Elissa Cunane scored 23 points and had 21 rebounds as she was named the Most Outstanding Player for Northern Guilford. Cunane also shot a perfect eight of eight from the floor. Jacksonville clawed their way back into the game, cutting the Northern lead to five in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals could not get out of the early hole they found themselves in after shooting less than 30% from the floor in the opening half. The Cardinals had three players in double-figures, Areon Lauren led the way with 16 points and was named Jacksonville s Most Outstanding Player. Kiani Gravely chipped in 14 points and Kennedy Todd-Williams added 10 points with her eight rebounds. Jacksonville finished the season 23-5, champions of the Coastal 3A regular season. The Cardinals won the ern Regional Championship for the first time in school history, appearing in the school s first Women s Basketball State Championship Game. Northern Guilford wrapped up the year 28-4, champions of the Mid-State 3A. Southeast Raleigh jumped out of the gates on fire, Jada McMillian and Tamia Davis had their team primed. McMillian went to work driving to the hoop while Davis hit the only three-pointer the Bulldogs attempted in the game during the opening frame. The Bulldogs pressed out to a 12-point lead with 3:47 to go in the second quarter after dominating the first quarter Northwest Guilford went on a run late in the first half to trim the Bulldog lead to just four at the break, Elizabeth Kitley was a dominating presence in the paint for the Vikings, scoring 18 points and snatching 8 rebounds on her way to being named the Kay Yow 4A State Championship Game Most Valuable Player. Cayla King also played a major role in the Viking comeback. King dumped in 15 points adding 3 assists, two blocks and a pair of steals. 4 2018 Men s Championship Retrospectives 1A Men: W-S Prep grabs fifth title with win over Pamlico Winston-Salem Prep dominated defensively in the second half, holding Pamlico County to just 16 points in the final 16 minutes, on the way to a victory and the Phoenix s fifth State Championship in school history. Pamlico led by as many as six points early in the second quarter, but Winston-Salem Prep kept the Hurricanes within striking distance and turned up the defensive intensity in the second half. The Phoenix also got hot from the floor in the final frames, shooting 54.5% from the floor in the fourth quarter, including three of five from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, outscoring Pamlico 23-4 in the final eight minutes. Daivien Williamson was named the Charlie Adams 1A Men s Championship Most Valuable Player as he led Winston-Salem Prep with a game-high 27 points. Williamson had four steals as well, two assists and a pair of rebounds in the game. KJ Watson was also a solid performer for the Phoenix, scoring nine points and snatching eight rebounds. Watson was named the Most Outstanding Player for the Phoenix. Chaz Gwyn was the only Winston-Salem Prep player in double-figures other than Williamson, as Gwyn finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Pamlico had a strong first half, and Lamont Murray led the way for the Hurricanes, finishing the game with 20 points and six rebounds. He was named the Hurricanes Most Outstanding Player in the game. However, Pamlico could not get shots to fall in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter, as the Hurricanes shot just 15.4% from the floor in the fourth quarter. The Forest Hills Yellow Jackets saw their State Championship dreams die in the Regional Finals each of the last two years. This year s team got over that hump, earning the school their first state championship berth since 1964, and with a win over Greene Central in the 2A State Championship, won their first State Championship in Men s Basketball. The game was a tight one throughout, as the two teams were tied on eight separate occasions and the lead changed hands six times. However, it was a hot shooting third quarter that sparked the Yellow Jackets to their largest lead, 10, as Forest Hills hit seven three-point buckets in the quarter. Jai Rorie was the catalyst, scoring 22 points and hitting six of his 14 three-point attempts. Rorie also had a pair of assists and a steal in the game, while grabbing two rebounds. He was named the Charlie Adams 2A Men s Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player. Trey Belin earned Most Outstanding Performer honors with 10 points and five rebounds for Forest Hills. Jaleel McLaughlin had 16 points and two rebounds, including an old fashioned three-point play late in the fourth quarter that steadied the Yellow Jackets in the face of a Greene Central run that tied the game. Greene Central had four players in double-figures as Torrence Clark led the way with a double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds. He was named Greene Central s Most Outstanding Performer. 5 2018 Men s Championship Retrospectives 3A Men: Cox Mill escapes Northside for second straight title RALEIGH, N.C. In a highly anticipated matchup of a pair of defending state champions, it was the defending 3A State Champions, Cox Mill, that held on to down last year s 2A State Champions, Northside-Jacksonville, by a narrow margin. The two teams played a very tight first half, with Cox Mill taking a slim lead into the halftime break, but the Chargers came out firing in the third quarter, raising their lead to as many as 13 around the midway point of the third frame. As champions typically do, Northside-Jacksonville battled back, eventually drawing even with the Chargers on a threepoint bomb by Gabe Kirkendoll, knotting the game at 63 all with just 19 seconds remaining. Wendell Moore, Jr., last year s 3A Championship Game Most Valuable Player, stepped up to the line with seven seconds to go and knocked down two free throws to give the Chargers a lead. Northside had one final push up the floor, and Levi Ramirez heaved a ball, that went in for three, but it was ruled he had stepped on the sideline before the shot, and the shot waived off with only a second remaining, sending Cox Mill to their second-straight State Championship. Moore, Jr. struggled from the floor all game, as a stingy Monarch defense held him to just 3 of 13 from the floor. He was able to get to the foul line 19 times as he converted 17 of those free throws on the way to 24 points and Charlie Adams NCHSAA 3A Men s Basketball Championship Game Most Valuable Player honors for the second year in a row. Caleb Stone-Carrawell was huge for the Chargers as well, scoring 18 points on 8-14 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. Stone-Carrawell was named the Chargers Most Outstanding Player. Rechon Leaky Black had 9 points in the game, but did pick up six steals, helping the Chargers win the turnover battle by a margin. Kenny Dye was the Most Outstanding Player for Northside-Jacksonville. The Monarchs guard scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Two other Monarchs were in double-figures with Kirkendoll scoring 16 with 7 rebounds. Davis A Men: Independence climbs past Heritage for second state championship in program history CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The Independence Patriots returned to the 4A State Championship Game for the first time since 1997, when they knocked off Richmond County. The second trip to a State Final was a pretty similar picture as the Patriots played solid team basketball on their way to a victory over Heritage. The Patriots never trailed by more than two, which came in the opening minute of play as Huskies senior guard Jarren McCallister got Heritage off to a 2-0 lead, but Independence closed the first frame on a 9-2 run, stretching their advantage out to 17-9 at the first quarter break. Heritage played the Patriots closely, outscoring Independence in the second quarter, as things settled into more of a halfcourt game, but Independence rattled off a pair of threes in the third, with Andra McKee and Jordan Mobley connecting to stretch their lead to 13 heading into the fourth, and the Patriots never looked back. Jayden Gardner kept Heritage in the game the whole way, as the senior committed to Carolina worked hard in the paint. Gardner scored a game-high 30 points and snatched 13 rebounds, converting 10 of his 11 foul shots. He was named Heritage s Most Outstanding Player. Jamarius Burton played a huge role in both the offensive scoring and on the glass for the Patriots. Burton scored 13 on the night, grabbing seven rebounds while dishing out three assists on his way to being named the Charlie Adams 4A Men s Basketball Championship Game s Most Valuable Player.
