2 DETERMINING METHODS VISION-SETTING Marlins Think Tank: Fourth Grade Social Studies Lesson Plan #1 OBJECTIVE. What is your objective? Student will be able to: SS.4.A.1.1: Analyze primary and secondary resources to identify significant individuals and events throughout Florida history. SS.4.A.1.2: Synthesize information related to Florida history through print and electronic media. KEY POINTS. What knowledge and skills are embedded in the objective? 1. A primary source is a document or physical object that was written or created during the time under study (i.e. diary, speech, manuscript, letter, interview, news film, autobiography, etc.). 2. A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes, or graphics of primary sources in them (i.e. textbooks, magazine articles, encyclopedias, etc.). 3. The magic of the Internet: The history of Florida can be researched and studied using a plethora of online resources. ASSESSMENT. Describe, briefly, what students will do to show you that they have mastered (or made progress toward) the objective. Students will create RAFT assignments based on events or figures in Florida s history, demonstrating their understanding of primary vs. secondary sources. OPENING (10 min.) How will you communicate what is about to happen? How will you communicate how it will happen? How will you communicate its importance? How will you communicate connections to previous lessons? How will you engage students and capture their interest? Students will enter class and immediately respond to the following prompt on the board: What do you know about Florida s history? List any and all things that you know about Florida, its people, its creation, its past, and its present. MATERIALS. Student notebooks After students have been given five minutes to write, the teacher will begin: Okay, all, what do you think? Would anyone like to share? (Calls hands) Today we are going to learn a little bit about the history of Florida, utilizing primary sources, secondary sources, and the Internet. How many people use the Internet daily? We are going to practice our research skills today as well.
3 INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (15 min.) How will you explain/demonstrate all knowledge/skills required of the objective, so that students begin to actively internalize key points? Which potential misunderstandings do you anticipate? How will you proactively mitigate them? How will students interact with the material? When we are learning about the past, we typically utilize two different types of sources: primary and secondary. Take notes at this point: A primary source is a document or physical object that was written or created during the time under study. A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes, or graphics of primary sources in them. I am going to hold up a variety of sources (ten total). It is your responsibility to classify them in your notebook. For each source that I hold up, attempt to identify if it is a primary or secondary source. I will give you ten seconds to silently and individually make your guess. Then, I will ask you to raise your hand if you believe the source is primary or secondary. You may have to explain to the class WHY you believe the source is primary or secondary, so be prepared. GUIDED PRACTICE (10 min.) How will students practice all knowledge/skills required of the objective, with your support, such that they continue to internalize the key points? How will you ensure that students have multiple opportunities to practice, with exercises scaffolded from easy to hard? Group A (five minutes): We are going to read a biography of Andre Dawson. As we read, identify three important facts from his life (and at least one fact that ties him to Florida). Raise your hand if you believe that the biography is a primary source? A secondary source? Why? Group B (five minutes): Using our class computers and the following website, identify three pictures on the site and explain their significance in Florida s history (on your handout): This should be done silently and individually. Student notebooks Newspaper Diary Textbook Magazine Encyclopedia Speech Letter Interview Biography Autobiography Marlins Think Tank: Fourth Grade Florida History Handouts Marlins Think Tank: Fourth Grade Florida History Handouts
4 INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (15 min.) How will students independently practice the knowledge and skills required of the objective, such that they solidify their internalization of the key points prior to the lesson assessment? We are now going to watch an interview of Andre Dawson himself, serving as a modern-day Miami Marlin. He will be discussing Florida s history and his opinion of important Floridians. As we watch, take notes on at least three opinions present in the interview. Raise your hand if you believe that the interview is a primary source? A secondary source? Why? When we are done watching the interview, it is going to be your responsibility to create a RAFT assignment (at least seven lines), highlighting some aspect of Florida s history and/or the people who we studied today. You will have ten minutes to complete your RAFT, silently and individually. Marlins Think Tank: Fourth Grade Florida History Handouts Andre Dawson Interview Clip RAFT stands for Role, Audience, Format, and Topic. Role: You can be anyone! You could be Andre Dawson, the modern-day Marlin, yourself, or an important Floridian in the state s history. Audience: To whom are you writing? A friend? A big group of people? Yourself? Format: What is the format? Will this be a primary source? Is it a speech, a diary entry, or a letter? Topic: What are you writing about? Your topic must have something to do with Florida, its history, or how it can be improved. Lesson Assessment: Once students have had an opportunity to practice independently, how will they attempt to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge/skills required of the objective? The lesson assessment will be the product of the time utilized during independent practice. CLOSING (5 min.) How will students summarize and state the significance of what they learned? If we have time, at least three students will share their RAFTs. What we learned today can help us in the future when we think about the past and how it could potentially repeat itself. In order to change the world and make it a better place, we need to know and appreciate our history. Great job today!
