2 The Program In 2005, the makers of Minute Maid and the Houston Astros announced the Program to assist Houston-area high school senior boys and girls with college expenses. Qualifications for Applicant must: i) not be a recruited prospective studentathlete of an NCAA collegiate institution, as defined by NCAA By-Law ; ii) have participated in a youth baseball or softball program; iii) live in the Greater Houston Area; iv) graduate from a public or private secondary school by June 15, ; GRAND SLAM FOR YOUTH BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION v) provide evidence of admission to a post-secondary college or university, including, but not limited to, a junior or community college, in the United States or a United States territory, as well as acceptance of that admission; v) complete and submit application along with two adult recommendations by the set deadline; vi) if selected as a semifinalist, complete a personal interview with the college scholarship award selection committee. 12 Grand Slam For Background What is? On June 5, 2002, the Houston Astros and the makers of Minute Maid announced that they had expanded their relationship to create a long-term marketing and community partnership. Among other things, the agreement called for the Astros Field to be rechristened Minute Maid Park; the continuation of the Minute Maid Squeeze Play interactive kidsʼ area at Minute Maid Park; and a commitment to support youth baseball programs in the Houston area. Out of that commitment to youth came ( GSFYB ). comprises the following four components: Sponsorship of the City of Houston Parks & Recreation Departmentʼs Program The 2006 season marks the fourth year has sponsored the City of Houston Parks & Recreation Departmentʼs free youth baseball, softball, and t-ball program for kids ages GSFYB provides all t-shirts, caps, equipment, and instruction for the program. More than 3,000 Houston-area boys and girls benefit from this sponsorship each year. Refurbishment of one youth ball field a year The Astros and Minute Maid have pledged to refurbish one youth ball field each year by providing renovated field surfaces. fencing, covered dugouts, scoreboard or other needs. Employees of both organizations assist in the refurbishment efforts. Recently, the Astros and Minute Maid completed refurbishment efforts on a baseball field for The Boys and Girls Club Morefield Unit. A baseball-related educational program In 2005, the makers of Minute Maid and the Houston Astros announced The Grand Slam For Youth Baseball Program to assist Houston-area high school senior boys and girls with college expenses. In the inaugural year of the Program, two $2,500 college scholarships went to a senior boy and girl participating in Houstonʼs Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program. In 2006, gave four $2,500 and eight $500 scholarships to Houston area youth. Offer unique fund-raising opportunities for youth baseball/softball teams and leagues Through GSFYB, the Astros and Minute Maid offer unique fund-raising opportunities to help qualified 501(c)(3) youth baseball/softball teams and leagues raise money for baseball/softball-related expenses. An example is the -branded concession stand at Minute Maid Park established in conjunction with ARAMARK. The stand is staffed by youth baseball/softball volunteers (ages 16 and over) during Astros games, with portions of the proceeds going to the teams and leagues
