3 This year marks the Yankees sixth annual HOPE Week (Helping Others Persevere & Excel) an initiative rooted in the belief that acts of goodwill provide hope and encouragement to more than just the recipient of the gesture. Each day during HOPE Week, the Yankees will reach out to an individual, family or organization worthy of recognition and support. Whenever possible, the Yankees will attempt to personally connect with individuals in the settings of their greatest successes at locations that honor the spirit of their noble endeavors. All outreach in the community ultimately culminates with recognition at Yankee Stadium during a Yankees game. HOPE Week is about people helping people. The one thing everybody has no matter their background or financial situation is time. By involving every one of our players and coaches, along with Manager Joe Girardi, General Manager Brian Cashman, our minor league affiliates and front office staff, we are sending the message that everyone can give of themselves to make their community a better place. Equally significant during HOPE Week is garnering publicity for the highlighted causes and organizations. The greatest challenge facing many not-for-profits is generating interest, awareness and funding for their missions. The Yankees encourage all their fans to get involved Give HOPE! ORGANIZATIONAL INITIATIVE The Yankees are proud to announce that for the third consecutive year, each of their six U.S.-based affiliates will hold their own HOPE Weeks, truly making this initiative one that the entire organization stands behind in words and in action. GCL Media interested in covering any of the Yankees HOPE Week events are encouraged to contact the Yankees Media Relations department: (718) or media@yankees.com At the conclusion of each of the last four years of HOPE Week ( ), the Yankees were honored with the President s Volunteer Service Award, given in recognition and appreciation of commitment to strengthening the Nation and for making a difference through volunteer service. The award was bestowed by the President s Council on Service and Civic Participation in conjunction with the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each of this year s HOPE Week honorees will also receive the award. HOPE WEEK RECAPS MONDAY: The New York Yankees kicked off HOPE Week 2014 by bringing together representatives from all 25 prior HOPE Week days for a reunion at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The gathering celebrated the five-year anniversary of the initiative. Yankees General Partner / Vice Chairperson Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, former Yankees Mariano RIvera and David Cone, and current Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova were on hand to support the former HOPE Week honorees. The Yankees were proud to host this event at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, which serves as an enduring tribute to this country s heroes. It was important to the Yankees that the site of the reunion be as grand and meaningful as the dreams, actions and aspirations of our honorees. TUESDAY: Today the New York Yankees held the second day of HOPE Week 2014 by celebrating Career Gear, which is an organization that helps promote the economic independence of low-income men by providing financial literacy training, professional attire and career development tools. Derek Jeter, Jacoby Ellsbury, Hiroki Kuroda, Brian Roberts and Alfonso Soriano visited Career Gear s office in lower Manhattan, where they helped measure and outfit men with suits provided by DKNY. Career Gear participants then shared their respective success stories. These men and their families, along with administrators from Career Gear, will be guests of the Yankees for tonight s 7:05 p.m. game vs. Toronto at Yankee Stadium. REMAINING HOPE WEEK SCHEDULE JUNE ***INFORMATION IS FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY DUE TO THE SURPRISE ELEMENTS EACH DAY*** WEDNESDAY: The Yankees will celebrate the non-profit group Friends of Jaclyn ( In March 2004, 9-year-old Jaclyn Murphy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. When the Northwestern University women s lacrosse team learned about what Jaclyn was going through, they adopted her as an honorary member of the team. Later that spring, Northwestern won its first-ever national championship. Seeing how much it meant to his daughter s recovery, Jaclyn s father, Denis, started Friends of Jaclyn, a foundation created to improve the quality of life of pediatric brain tumor patients by pairing them with collegiate and high school sports teams. HOPE Week Surprise: Joe Girardi, David Robertson, Ichiro Suzuki, Shawn Kelley, John Ryan Murphy, David Phelps, Matt Thornton and Larry Rothschild will surprise Jaclyn (who is now a student at Marist College) and three young children who are participants in the Friends of Jaclyn program: Ryan Tucker (12) and Quinn Ostergren (4), who are cousins, along with 11-year-old Sean Callahan. The children will begin their day by having lunch with the players and coaches at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manhattan. As honorary team members in the afternoon, the Yankees will hold a press conference to welcome them to the team at 3:15 p.m. in the press conference room. The children will be given their own lockers in the clubhouse, where they will suit up in Yankees uniforms before joining their new teammates for a variety of batting practice activities. After being on the field for pregame ceremonies, the Murphy, Tucker, Ostergren and Callahan families and Friends of Jaclyn representatives will be guests of the Yankees for the 7:05 p.m. game vs. Toronto at Yankee Stadium. THURSDAY: The Yankees will celebrate the non-profit group Musicians on Call ( which provides volunteer musicians for hospital visits. Since its inception 15 years ago, the organization has had hundreds of volunteer musicians perform for over 300,000 individuals, with a focus on reaching patients who are confined to their rooms and afforded very little interaction with others due to their illnesses. Based in New York City, the organization has grown greatly, expanding to include locations in Philadelphia, Nashville, Miami, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Washington, D.C HOPE Week Surprise: Yankees players will go to the Morgan Stanley Children s Hospital at NewYork-Presbyterian, where they will perform in a concert with Musicians on Call in the hospital s Winter Garden. They will then visit patients who are confined to their rooms and unable to attend the concert. That evening, volunteer musicians, guides and Musicians on Call representatives will be guests of the Yankees for their 7:05 p.m. game vs. Toronto. FRIDAY: The Yankees will recognize New Jersey native and University of Delaware freshman Quai Jefferson. When his mother, Vaida Jefferson, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 11 years ago, her son was just 6 years old. By the time he was 10, he was running the household, cooking and doing laundry. Nurses taught him to check Vaida s blood pressure and inject her twice a day with Copaxone, a drug which eases the effects of MS. Now 18 years old, Quai (pronounced Kway) has recently graduated from St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey. He was on the honor roll and a two-sport varsity athlete in football and basketball. This summer, Quai will attend the University of Delaware, where he will play football and major in business administration with an emphasis in accounting or marketing. HOPE Week Surprise: Yankees players and coaches will meet Quai and his mother, Vaida, in Montvale, New Jersey, for a surprise lunch at Quai s high school, Saint Joseph Regional. The group will be joined by select members of the St. Joseph Regional faculty who have had a profound influence on Quai s life. All will be guests of the Yankees for the 7:05 p.m. game vs. Baltimore at Yankee Stadium. THE YANKEES THANK... The ideals and dreams of HOPE Week cannot be fulfilled without assistance from corporate supporters such as Carlo's Bakery (Cake Boss), Casio, Delta Air Lines, DKNY, FlyteTime Worldwide Transportation, Frito-Lay, Hard Rock Cafe, Kunath Signs, Legends Hospitality Management, Majestic Athletic, Mars, Modell's, Nestle Waters, New Era, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Nike, NYY Steak, Party City, PepsiCo., Rawlings, Sheraton, and Subway.
