TEACHERS GUIDE Ryne Sandberg Ryne finished his second managerial season in Peoria in 2008 and was promoted to Double-A Tennessee of the Southern League for the 2009 season. He led the Chiefs to a record in 2007, his first ever as a manager. The Chiefs finished in a three way tie for the Western Division crown but were kept out of the playoffs on a tiebreaker. In 2008 the Chiefs went for his second season as the Chiefs manager. The season saw Sandberg lead the Chiefs onto the field at Chicago s Wrigley Field in the first Minor League game ever played in the stadium s 94- year-old history. Sandberg played 15 years in the big leagues with the Cubs. Originally drafted by the Phillies, Sandberg was traded to the Cubs in Prior to moving into a managerial role, Sandberg was a spring training instructor for the Cubs in Mesa, Arizona. Sandberg was a three-sport star at North Central High School in Spokane, Washington before graduating in He earned all-city honors in basketball and baseball and was a first team all-state selection in football. Ryne still holds numerous Cubs and Major League records. He hit 277 home runs as a second basemen, which was the big league record at the time. He also has the record for fielding percentage by a second basemen (.989). Sandberg also is fifth in club history in home runs (282) and third in runs scored (1,316). Sandberg earned the NL Most Valuable Player award in 1984 after compiling a.314 batting average with 36 doubles, 19 triples, 19 homers and 84 RBI. He also had league-high 114 runs scored and stole 32 bases, while leading the Cubs to the best record in the National League that season. He led the Cubs to their first playoff appearance since Sandberg retired from baseball mid-way through the 1994 season but would return for two more seasons with the Cubs in During that time, he hit 37 more home runs that put him ahead of Joe Morgan on the all-time list for home runs by a second basemen. The Cubs retired Sandberg s #23 jersey on August 28 th, His flag flies below that of Billy Williams on the right field flagpole. Ryno, as he became known to Cubs fans, was elected into the Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, with a lifetime batting average of.285 and 282 home runs along with 1,061 RBI. He received 393 votes (76.2-percent) in just his third year on the ballot. Sandberg along with Wade Boggs compiled the Class of During his career, he made 10 National League All-Star appearances and won nine consecutive Rawlings Gold Gloves at second base.
