2 Page 2 Health, Fitness and Nutrition Guest Speaker - Keith Sieracki What a way to ride in on the new year, a Great Guest Speaker! After the holidays, day light ending by 6:00 each night and our cold spell, all riders were interested in any information and tips on better riding, general fitness and nutrition. At our January Club Meeting, we were pleased to have as our guest speaker Mr. Keith Sieracki, a well educated and experienced athletic instructor and trainer in exercise physiology and sports medicine. Keith provided an excellent presentation with several slides on a wide range of topics from general fitness objectives, why and how much to exercise and how to stay motivated. Keith also talked about nutrition, what and how much to eat and drink on various rides. Keith talked about drinking water, sports drinks and how much food you should eat depending on your particular ride and personal goals. Keith presented a lot of information and we hope to invite him back to discuss some topics in more detail. We will also see if we can post some of the information on future newsletters. Even More from Keith Sieracki & Preston Vulgamore...S T R E T C H I N G And for the finally, Keith presented Preston Vulgamore to show us a few simple stretches. Keith and Preston provided attendees with a examples of various stretching activities we can do before, during and after our rides. Some can be done with the bike (on or off), while others can be performed on the floor or by standing or holding a chair. Keith Sieracki Bio Keith is a member of PRR Bike Club and SCOR. 4 Page 4 SCOR Update and Myakka State Park Ride It was a slow start to the New Year what with the first two Saturdays getting rained out and the Sunday rides being so windy. Jan 16 we began to re-group with a pleasant ride on the Legacy trail in Venice. We met at the old Venice Rail Road station and ended up on Venice beach, fifteen miles of traffic free riding made for a nice start to the year. Over a relaxing brunch after the ride the topic of discussion was where did all our newly gained fitness go over Christmas and how were we going to get it back. January 23 was probably the best SCOR ride to date. We had a couple of new riders join us and hope they will be joining the club. Bill and Liz joined us and by all accounts they had a good time. We met at the parking lot at in the Myakka State Park for a leisurely ride to the north gate. At this point half of the group opted to go outside the park for a faster pacer ride and a look at the local horse farms. The rest of us cruised back through the park to wait at the restaurant for the others to join us. If you haven t been to the park recently please note it now has a great restaurant (Even had Gator Stew and Gator Bite on the menu), gift store and restrooms. Considering we are In Season there was very little traffic and the traffic we did encounter was very respectful of cyclists. We had 13 riders in all which is a good attendance for a SCOR ride. This is one ride we will be sure to repeat in 3-4 months time. We are closing the month out by joining the Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club (CCBC) on Saturday 30 th for their annual Rotunda Ride with a Pot Luck lunch and SWAP Meet to follow. I went to this a few years ago and it was great fun, not to mention picking up some great deals on used bicycle stuff. CCBC has several rides that day including a mph ride that just fits in nicely with where many of the SCOR riders feel most comfortable so we are expecting a fun and calorie packed day. We appreciate the Coastal Cruisers for opening up this ride and making us welcome. I will report on this ride next month. To see what rides SCOR is putting on in February please got o our web site at Eric Stockley SCOR Coordinator Riders suited-up and get ready for a great ride at the park. Lots to see and explore. Looking at all those alligators, sure makes me feel good about being on the road and not in the water.
