3 WELKOM TO! Pietermaritzburg will be at the heart of the action from August 31st to September 3rd, as the 2017 Para-cycling Road World Championships come to the South African city. In an effort to lay claim to a rainbow jersey of their own, nearly 260 athletes from all across the globe will make the trek to the 29th southern parallel. In the past, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has selected Pietermaritzburg as host city for numerous officially sanctioned events, including stages of Para-cycling Road World Cups in 2015 and We already have the experience, the team is well aware of athlete expectations and needs; we re ready to do whatever it takes to meet those needs. We re confident that the UCI World Championships will be memorable for all who come to compete we know for certain that the competition will be thrilling! A Unique Destination Pietermaritzburg may be known as Africa s bike city, but many other seminal events have occurred here as well. It s such an important city in the country s history. Africa s first-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert John Lutuli was from here. Ghandi spent a lot of time here after a life-changing event, and Nelson Mandela was arrested here, and began his 27 years of imprisonment, summarized Alec Lenferna. Para-cyclists won t need to ride for too long to realize that things are delightfully different in Africa. Athletes will remark quite quickly things they wouldn t experience elsewhere in the world. South Africa has a lot to offer: the weather is unique, the flora and fauna is otherworldly, and the culture is distinctive, explained the Director of the Para-cycling Road World Championships. Time Trial events will be held at the Midmar Dam Reserve, while Road events will start and finish in the heart of Pietermaritzburg, at Alexandra Park. They won t be the most difficult race routes, but they re not easy either. There may not be any big climbs, but it s not flat and there isn t any time to rest or soft pedal because of the technical sections. Ultimately, the winner will be the person who has the most solid race overall. Already globally known for its high profile cycling events, Pietermaritzburg can now solidify its standing as a world-class cycling destination, thanks to the Para-cycling Road World Championships. It s a crowning accomplishment for a city of this size, and on a continent where cycling isn t the national sport. We are a great example of what can be accomplished in terms of local development UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD MEDIA GUIDE 3

11 LETTERS AND NUMBERS: HOW THE SPORT CLASSES WORK IN PARA-CYCLING C4, B, H3, T2 no, they re not the names of Star Wars droids, they re para-cycling sport classes for athletes in the World Cup, World Championships, and Paralympic Games. But what exactly do those seemingly secret acronyms mean? The letter represents the division in which the athlete competes, while the numbers indicate the severity of the athlete s handicap. Letters for type of handicap Para-cyclists who have a visual limitation are classed in the tandem division (B for blind), and are guided by a pilot with perfect vision. Teamwork is essential, because each cyclist must pedal with the same rhythm and coordinate physically for turns. Britain s Neil Fachie who holds 11 World titles is a consummate professional in tandem, and has notably been unbeatable in 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships with his pilot Peter Mitchell. Division C was created especially for athletes with muscle weakness, coordination difficulties, or amputees. Athletes in this division use a traditional bike that has been adapted for their particular limitations. Left-leg amputee Jozef Metelka (C4) is one of the more well-known in this division. At his debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the three-time World Champion in the Individual Pursuit provided Slovakia with a gold and a silver medal in the velodrome. He also become the first paracyclist to race with World Track elite at Glasgow Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup last November. The handbike (H) is reserved for athletes amputated of one or two legs, or for athletes in wheelchairs who are unable to use lower limbs. As the name indicates, it s arm-power that makes the bike roll. Italy s Alessandro Zanardi is without a doubt the most recognized in his discipline. The former race car driver lost both his legs in a serious accident, and has become a para-cycling expert. A multiple UCI Para-cycling Road World Championship medallist, the athlete who turned 50 last Autumn has four Paralympic gold and one Paralympic silver to his name. Athletes affected by a neurologically-based handicap compete using a tricycle (T). Canada s Shelley Gautier, who races in T1, is one of the most consistent competitors in her sport class. Gautier has been crowned World Champion no less than 12 times and has earned a Paralympic bronze medal. Numbers for severity of impairment A commonality in both C and H classes is a number from 1 to 5 that accompanies the letter, delineating the severity of the athlete s impairment. The milder an impairment, the closer the number is to five (5), while a limitation of one (1) indicates a severe impairment. In the tricycle class, athletes are divided into T1 and T2. Depending on the depth of a sport class, multiple groups could race together during certain events. At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, female C4 and C5 athletes competed for the same gold medal in the Road Race, but it was Britain s Sarah Storey (C5) who took home the gold. Even though she races T1, Shelley Gautier distinguished herself by earning the bronze medal in the T1-T2 Time Trial at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD MEDIA GUIDE 11
12 PARA-CYCLING TO ELECT ITS UCI ATHLETES COMMISSION REPRESENTATIVES Elections for the two para-cycling representatives one woman and one man on the UCI Athletes Commission will be held on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September, in conjunction with the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships (31 August-3 September), in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. As part of the revamp of all UCI Commissions in 2017, the Athletes' Commission is electing its new members throughout the year during the World Championships of each discipline. After modernising the Athletes Commission in 2015, the UCI is increasing the representation of its disciplines by giving a greater voice to athletes. Men/women parity which had previously been reserved for the Olympic disciplines (Road, Track, BMX and Mountain Bike) and Para-cycling are now extended to all disciplines. Chaired by Bobbie Traksel (NED) since June 2015, the Athletes Commission will increase from 12 to 20 members in 2017 and will continue to have a President elected by his/her peers who will serve on the UCI Management Committee, the executive body of the UCI operating under the authority of the Congress. Any athlete participating in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships is eligible to vote. Athletes who took part in the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, held in Los Angeles, in January of this year, and not present in Pietermaritzburg, will be allowed to participate in the elections via an electronic vote. In order to be eligible, candidates must be active or recently retired, and have declared their intention to stand before 21 August. Publication of candidates is due on 24 August. The results will be published on the UCI website after the World Championships. The Athletes Commission members shall be elected for a term of four years, with a mandate effective between the 2017 and 2021 UCI Congresses UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD MEDIA GUIDE 12
