2 Cycling SA a brief overview Cycling South Africa is recognised as the official federation and governing body of Cycling in SA CSA is affiliated to the controlling body of sport in SA, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) as well as Government s Department of Sports and Recreation We are a member of the International Cycling Federation UCI, as well as the African Confederation of Cycling CAC CSA regulates the 5 major disciplines within the sport (professional and amateur): Road cycling Track cycling Mountain biking BMXing and Paracycling

3 Participation in Cycling BMI Independent Study 2009 Despite often being pegged as an elitist sport, cycling s reach is greater than generally expected ranking as one of the top 15 codes in South Africa amongst all adults (21 st juniors) and the 10 th most popular participation sport overall amongst whites (4 th in white adult) The approximately adult and junior cyclists in SA can be segmented as follows: Cycling Participants (2009) Number of Participants Adults (19 yrs +) Juniors (13 18 yrs) Total Black White Coloured Asian Total

9 Summary Participation and Growth active cyclists in SA individual participants in events Bucked the trend, showing +ve growth Scope to improve club/support structures ~1/3 of participants are female 66% below the age of 35 (good coverage across the spectrum) Largely LSM 7 10 but lower LSM market showing good growth

10 Cycling Spectators The approximately 3.2m cycling followers can be segmented as follows: Spectators (2009) Number of Spectators Adults Juniors Total Black White Coloured Asian Total In addition to being a popular participation sport in SA, cycling now ranks amongst the top 15 codes amongst both black and white males While offering a high targeted income group, cycling is unique in that it is able to simultaneously attract a much younger audience than other comparable sport codes ~60/40 male/female (growing female sector) 45% younger than 35
