2 2 Muni Vehicle & Policy Any decal not within the Muni Vehicle must be approved by both the Director of Transit and the Director of Communications. The language and/or design must also be approved by the Marketing and Creative Services departments. Muni Vehicle A confident and unified visual identity, consistent with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) values, communicates a strong and organized Agency core to Muni customers. It is important that the SFMTA communicate a coordinated identity and comprehensible system in all aspects of operations. Decals on Muni vehicles are one method of how Muni and the SFMTA express their identities. In this, it is important for the decal tone and message to portray an efficient, cohesive, and attractive system. Further, it is a necessity that messages are readable across cultures and that Muni decals effectively communicate rider safety and basic operations of the system. This document improves the visual identity on vehicles by reducing the amount of decals and reducing verbiage on decals. It standardizes graphics, colors, decal size and typography, all to strengthen Muni system legibility and readability for all passengers. Muni Vehicle Decal Design Policy Vehicle decal design presents a symbolic message about Muni and the agency. The Muni Vehicle guide how Muni communicates to customers during the boarding, riding and alighting portions of a customer s trip. reduce clutter and increase passenger information readability on vehicles. The design policy follows the SFMTA Brand Standards and unifies all passenger information on Muni vehicles, making the vehicular component of a Muni customer s experience unified and simple. Standards improve passenger information for both English-speaking and non-english-speaking users through the use of colors, shapes, and pictographs. Correct and proper use of the is required for all interior and exterior vehicle decals. Only the decals prescribed in this document are permitted on vehicles. New Decals New decals must be approved by and created with the assistance of the Communications department and Creative Services well in advance of production and prior to decal placement on any Muni vehicle. If a new decal or message is being proposed for the vehicle interior or exterior, it must be reviewed and accepted by the Transit and Communications Departments and passed on to have the design approved or created by Creative Services. Should a staff member propose a new decal, send an explaining the purpose and reasoning for the proposed decal and include the decal design and intended message to SFMTA Marketing Manager. The Marketing Manager will review the proposed decal and if approved, will send the decal to the Director of Transit and the Director of Communications for formal approval. If approved by all parties, send decal design and messaging to Creative Services at creative.services@sfmta.com to ensure the proposed decal meets the Decal Design Standards. 3 3 Muni Vehicle : Design Development The Muni Vehicle are governed by existing standards in the field of transportation for colors, shapes, and pictographs. Decals use national standards for universal symbols, originally created from a partnership between AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) and U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation). Wherever possible, pictographs are used instead of written explanations. Pictographs can illustrate a concept without the use of language, therefore being understandable by both English-speaking and non-english-speaking Muni Customers. To reduce the amount of decals present in the system and minimize costs and labor, multiple messages will be combined onto one sticker whenever possible. Some universal pictographs for certain transit messages do not exist in current national standards. In these instances, new symbols designed in the style of the existing AIGA & DOT symbols were designed to fulfill the required messages. The new symbols were developed with a universal design approach and incorporate universal iconography within the designs where applicable. Newly introduced pictrographs were vetted for legibility by a group of about 2,400 community members.

4 4 Shape Shapes infer the type of behavior, a call to action, a safety message or general information that a passenger should be knowledgeable of while riding a Muni vehicle. Advisory A circle indicates an advisory action; it infers what a customer should do to stay safe. Regulation A circle with a strikethrough indicates a regulation, or what a customer should not do. Regulatory messages are rules of riding that make the ride comfortable and clean for all passengers. Caution A triangle shape communicates that a customer should execute caution and be aware of potential danger. Information A rectangle or square contains general customer information.

Lamination: 2 mil clear Mylar, anti-graffiti lamination Special: Slit back; round corner; glossy finish Warranty: 8 years indoor and outdoor Reflective Material: 3M 680 Scotchlite series with Controltac adhesive, a highly durable, flexible, enclosed Lens reflective sheeting designed for the production of multicolored markings and striping, which have the same appearance in the daytime and at night, even when viewed at side entrance angles. Recommended for commercial vehicle and fleet graphics, emblems or striping. Screen printing Ink: 3M 2900 series transparent ink (approved for OEM applications). Each decal in the Decal Lists, requiring a transparent background treatment will stipulate clear backing in the corresponding Colors & Background Materials list.
