4 Purpose In clinical areas wheelie bins should be used for transport of linen and waste. Regular cleaning of wheelie bins in ward and clinical areas must be undertaken in order to avoid and reduce the transmission of infectious agents. Cleaning is undertaken on a two monthly basis filling them with a solution of hot water and neutral detergent unless visibly soiled when wheelie bins must be cleaned immediately. Procedure All wheelie bins will be cleaned on a two mothly basis which Estates will organise. Facilities will use a cleaning bin schedule to enable this to happen (see Appendix 1). Please note the Facilities department will not clean the bin if there is a spillage in the wheelie bin, please adhere to procedure detailed below. On the side of the bin there will be a green clinicare label present stating when the bin was last cleaned. In the event of a spillage inside the bin:- During hours of 8am-8pm Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm Saturday-Sunday contact Domestic Supervisor on Bleep 23 who will organise for bin to be cleaned. Outside of these hours Departmental Staff are responsible for cleaning these bins. How to clean wheelie bins 1. Collect bin spillage box from Domestic Services Room (DSR) and fill spray bottle which contains chemical and add water to black mark on bottle. 2. Put on Personal Protective Equipment. 3. Use flat mop (colour coded yellow) to absorb spillage. 4. Remove mop head and place in alginate bag 5. Clean mop handle using yellow microfibre cloth and spray bottle 6. Put yellow microfiber cloth into alginate bag 7. Alginate bag to go to laundry 8. Remove PPE 9. Wash Hands 10. Return to DSR and replenish box 11. Arrange for Porters to replace with clean wheelie bin and remove soiled wheelie bin. 4
