Background This ride is hosted by the Johnson County Bike Club (JCBC). Typically over 300 riders participate with the support of over 50 volunteers, including a BUNCH of amateur radio operators. The ride starts and ends at Oregon Trail Park in Olathe. The course this year is 21, 45.2, 72.2, or miles. The route is an OUT and BACK design. All routes start and return to Oregon Trail Park. The course is in Johnson and Douglas counties so we will get a chance to work a wide area on a single repeater and best of all is to have an opportunity to hone our operator skills while helping a large part of our community.
Briefing Net On the Hz repeater at 1900 Friday May 24. Stations are encouraged to check in.
SAG / Rover Guide Med Rover will start in the Bravo Checkpoints, and roam as needed Alpha Rover will roam between Start & Walnut Bravo Rover will roam between Walnut & Vinland Charlie Rover will roam between Vinland & Outlook Delta Rover will roam between Outlook & Lonestar Moto rovers will watch for traffic, dogs along the route and riders in distress. Rovers should not leave their areas except in emergency. Riders will be carried back to the next rest stop towards the Finish, but not the entire way (Medical issues should rendezvous with Med rover) Notify net control when picking up a rider so another rover can meet at the interfacing Rest Stop. EVERYONE should watch for riders in trouble. Notify net control of the Rider #, gender, & description. Rovers should also stop to check with the ham at every rest stop.
Start Time If you already have a specific assignment be on station at the time indicated on the roster. SAGS will report to ST/FIN at 630 You need to be on station BEFORE 0700 if you are assigned an Alpha or Bravo location as the lead riders will be there VERY QUICKLY. Net Control will be on the air by EVERYONE should watch for riders in trouble. Notify net control of the Rider s gender & jersey color.
Assignment Types ROVERS/Checkpoints : Since we are short staffed, ROVERS will help to monitor intersections where cyclists could miss a turn or encounter dangerous high-speed motor traffic. These operators are the ones the cyclists are most aware of. They are greatly appreciated because they provide reassurance that help is near if needed. Carry GALLON Jugs of water. Please try to count the cyclists as they go by, and provide that info to NC when asked. SAGS : pick up riders who are won't/can't make it due to fatigue or injury. They will be hams, and have APRS. They will service a section of the route in a loop, and can transfer riders to the next Rest Stop. REST Stops : Make yourself known to the ride volunteers, keep them apprised of ride status, onset of riders, etc. Communicate supplies inventory & rest stop status, as well as a count of cyclists. Traffic : Monitor dangerous intersections and help to ensure that traffic and bicyclists pass through safely. Med Rover: If you see a medical problem call it in to Net Control and assist if you feel able, until med rover arrives. Most common: skinned legs from a fall (treat with water & antiseptic) or bonking out from the heat (treat with shade and air temperature water until they begin to sweat again.) If the emergency is life threatening, call 911 and notify net control. Moto Rovers : move up and down the line of cycles, keeping tabs on where the front cyclists are and where the laggards are. They watch for cyclists in trouble -- cramping muscles, disabled bikes or mishaps, (unfriendly dogs or other injured riders. Tail End Charlie : The location of the last rider on any loop is one of the most asked for pieces of information. The best technique is to leap frog the last rider(s) as opposed to following behind them at 5 miles per hour. The follow behind method makes the rider very nervous and self-conscious. Net Control : The liaison station to EMS, Sheriff, PD & Fire. Any non-critical calls for medical assistance can be directed through this station. Critical calls for medical assistance should be made using 911, and then notifying net control. EVERYONE should watch for riders in trouble. Notify net control of the Rider #, gender, & description.

Final Thoughts Thank you on behalf of the Kansas City Metro Bike Club, and ARES The hard work we all put forth for this event not only benefits the riders, but also is great emergency communication training for us. This event is as close to how a real emergency operation is run as we could ever devise. Having worked many of these as well as several real events I can tell you that no two are ever the same and there is no such thing as "too much training". Most of all, have FUN! This is just drudgery if we don t enjoy ourselves. Again... THANK YOU!!!! Brian Short, KC0BS JO CO ARES EC
