2 WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project Direct response to lack of data for non-motorized transportation There is years of data for vehicle trips, but not so for active transportation trips

3 WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Even though federal spending for bike/ped projects is increasing, it still is just a very small fraction of total transportation spending

4 Without usage and demand data, it is hard to measure positive benefits of investment in bicycling and walking WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

5 DENTON 2017 BIKE/PED COUNTS Official count dates and times: Tuesday, September p.m. Wednesday, September p.m. Thursday, September p.m. Saturday, September 16 noon-2 p.m. Sunday, September 17 noon, 2-p.m. We are officially counting on three weekdays this year. The more data to average the better. You may sign up for as many timeslots that fit your schedule.

6 DAY OF COUNT Arrive at your location minutes prior to your scheduled count time. Once you have arrived: Ensure your safety Be aware of your surroundings Find a safe location to conduct your counts (don t block the sidewalk) Record the background information on the top of the count forms. If you cannot make it, please call Julie. Life happens. Remain at your location until your counts are completed. Following the count, return your materials to Julie at City Hall, as soon as possible.

8 SCREENLINE COUNTS Screenline Count PEOPLE as they cross through the imaginary line The line includes the sidewalk There is no wrong direction on the sidewalk

11 Screenline form We are counting people on bikes AND people walking (pedestrians) Make a tally mark for what you see! We want accurate counts, not high counts! Some locations will have low counts

12 Screenline form You will ALWAYS mark Helmet or No Helmet for a person on a bicycle Sidewalk and Wrong Way will never both be marked

Things to note for people on bikes: Be sure to mark which gender Tally helmet and no helmet use for each gender Wrong way = riding on the street against traffic Sidewalk = anyone riding

14 Things to note for pedestrians and others: A person using a mobility assistive device is a pedestrian Rollerbladers, skateboards are Other Children in strollers are counted as pedestrians

15 COUNTING UNUSUAL BEHAVIORS Remember that we are counting PEOPLE and their TRIPS, not bicycles If someone crosses your screenline more than once, count them every time they cross

18 ZERO! They did not pass through the screenline If a car cuts through a back alley it does not get counted at that intersection

20 TWO! The person crossed the screenline two times If you get in your car and go to the post office and then the grocery store you took TWO trips.

22 FIVE If you can t ascertain male/female, guess and make a note You will ALWAYS mark either Helmet or No Helmet

24 TWO You will ALWAYS mark either Helmet or No Helmet

26 ONE You will ALWAYS mark either Helmet or No Helmet

28 ZERO We are counting NON-MOTORIZED transportation!

30 TWO in other

32 ONE You will ALWAYS mark either Helmet or No Helmet

34 TWO Assume goat paths or grass riding is the sidewalk You will ALWAYS mark either Helmet or No Helmet

35 AFTER THE COUNT IS OVER Pack up and go home! Return your items to Julie at her office in City Hall (215 E McKinney)
