Board of Directors Mary Margaret Williams, President Rob Yuschak, Vice President Don Williams, Road Captain Jackie McGill, Treasurer Laila Bremner, Secretary Strong out of the gate Janice Mosby, Membership Andrew Henkels, Webmaster Jay Kirsch, Newsletter Members at large Doug Jensen Brent Jones Rob Paull Robert Turner Board Meetings are on one Monday every month. The next board meeting is May 17th. Enjoy the Ride! May is National Bike Month Jay Kirsch, Outspokin Newsletter editor As I m home sick today working on our newsletter, news is rushing in from around town. The Super Series was well attended, including Jeff Goff finishing his first century ever! Two people not attending were Janet Goff and Jeanne Allgood, who traded in their wheels for soles that day as they each ran a half marathon - that s 13 miles without coasting! The Sunday Coffee rides and the first Metrics were also well attended. So we re off to a good start. Let s keep it up and have a great season! The Outspokin newsletter committee is always looking for contributions from the club, especially photographs! Submissions for the June issue of OutSpokin' are due Sunday, May 16th at 9PM. Please send your submissions to newsletter@bccutah.org. PAGE 2

President s Paceline Mary Margaret Williams League Cycling Instructor #254 BONNEVILLE CYCLING CLUB MAY 2010 Thoughts of sun and warm temperatures are in my mind and hoping the weather isn t teasing us too much. Being that the month of May is the official National ride to work month, we truly could benefit from cooperation of Mother Nature. My goal is to ride to work at least once or twice a week this month which I believe, for me, is a challenge. My commute is 18 miles one way with a 7:00 AM work start and I despise cold mornings. The exciting and motivating part is that quite a few teachers at West High (my school) commute daily and continue to encourage me to do the same. Once up and ready to go, the ride is invigorating and the day always seems to go better and is more enjoyable. Another advantage of riding to work is the ride home which can consist of either a relaxed pace for recovery or a faster pace for training or stress release. It is my hope that all cyclists attempt to ride to work at least once this month. If you do, tell us of your experiences in the next newsletter. Speaking of the newsletter, member cycling adventures and experiences are requested. So share with BCC your stories and pictures too, by submitting articles to Jay. Therefore, my next hope is that this season contributions to the newsletter are bountiful. Another hope is that members continue to support Monday night bike skills class and ride in May. These rides provide a variety of purposes: first, to welcome and assist new members, use as a refresher course (that wouldn t hurt any of us), or simply implement as a recovery ride. My next hope is that each of you participates in the best find contest by collecting fun items found on your rides. The contest ends in August and winners are decided at our annual club picnic which, by the way, will be August 28 at Draper Park. My final hope is that we all have a safe and enjoyable cycling season riding with old friends, new friends and sometimes by ourselves. On the business side of things, Wednesday, May 26 is our next General Membership Meeting. We will meet at the Red Robin on Foothill Drive around 6:30 PM for dinner and a meeting to follow. That way, it gives those Wednesday evening riders an opportunity to ride and attend the meeting. The room is rent free but they request we bring CASH to assist the servers with sorting payments since they prefer a one check route. But don t fret, it always works out. Two major topics for discussion and voting will be 501C3 tax exempt status and a change in our Articles of Incorporation to meet these requirements. Keep watch on the BCC web site and your mailing list for a copy of these two items to review prior to the meeting. BE a PART of BCC ride, lead a ride, volunteer, invite a friend to join, volunteer, thank your ride leader. PAGE 3

Road Report Don Williams, LC Instructor #253 May is National Bike Month!!! Basic Skills classes return for 4 Monday nights in May following the success of our Traffic skills classes west of the Millcreek REI. 7, 10 or 15 mile rides follows a miniclass. Recover, help new riders or just enjoy the ride on Monday nights. Rides its what we do best!!! April weather was less than cooperative but already the Early Morning wake-ups are averaging 6 to 8 people per morning. That s 33 club miles per week or 198 people miles per week Jeff Levenson points out a century in 3 weeks in 8 hours per person. They continue through the season, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Bike n Brew on Thursdays in its short run so far is averaging 15 riders when its not snowing. Thursday options also include the Sugarhouse to Cottonbottom ride that continues in May. April topped out above 40 rides for the month. Starting with Bob Schultz in Sandy, our leaders were: Lynda Forbush Marina snow & go, Jeff and Sandy Levenson early mornings and Moochies, Chris and Janet Goff wide awake at the coffee ride, John McCool on Hump days, Doug Jensen brewing on Thursday nights, Pascale de Rozario to the Cottonbottom, Jen Green with a stepped schedule in Logan training for Little Red, Cheryl Soshnik with the first backside of the year, Rich Schultz with the south valley temple view spectacular, Bee Lu)in up Emigration Canyon. The printed schedule for May officially hit capacity due to space constraints ride names and very limited information will be listed on the hard copy. Full length write-ups are, of course, available on the website. The printed schedule as an example, is quite impressive for the sheer number of rides we do. Congrats to all our ride leaders who make this possible. WHAT ABOUT THE METRIC? The Metric has a couple done already the first event drew 58 riders, other events come this month. We Need More Metrics - As of now the short legs of SuperSeries make up most of the Metric schedule but what about those other days that we ride 50 to 70 miles rides? Any day - weekday or weekend if its 50 to 75 miles, you schedule it and it s a freebie it can be a metric event. The metric distance should be the bulk of our schedule. MARK THAT RIDE Marking that ride Paint is on-hand and we want all our weekly routes marked, it helps everyone out, and should ease some of the load of being a ride leader if everyone can stay on a clear course. Doug Jensen has already marked the North route for Bike n Brew by riding the course no less. The south marks will soon follow, but if one doesn t have the time to cycle the course - auto is the next best option. Paid mileage for marking that route is on the agenda for Board consideration. At the non-profit rate no one will cover a car payment but it might help cover some of the expense. Portal to portal miles or reimbursement for the actual route length remains a topic of discussion. see next page... PAGE 4

BCC COMMUTER CHALLENGE May starts the BCC Commuter challenge. We hope to have the self reporting part of the Challenge in place on the club website soon. Commute to work, to the store, to rides even, anytime you leave the car at home enter it at the BCC website, if you re up to the challenge. Every Friday in May is BTW day or Bike to Wherever day. National BTW day is Friday May 21 st but to kick off our own challenge why not ride to work or that close-by club ride at least once every week? Events to plan your life around... May 1 Tour de Drome Ogden - Fee event. May 2 Eureka plan on wind and snow or wind and sun, or just wind. May 8 Springville to Nephi with 3 shorter legs. Ride leaders needed for the 30 and 55 mile routes. May 29 - Pony express century Eagle Mtn Cheap entry fee Epic Biking in Saratoga sponsors it. May 31 Redwood to Antelope SuperSeries. At press time leaders are needed for mid, longer and longest options. On the BCC website click... to watch your lifetime mileages grow!!! This year BCC will ride its one millionth mile!!! New Blog by a BCC member Sandy Levenson is now writing for the Valley Journals. Click on... to see her latest article. Safety Corner Mary Margaret Williams League Cycling Instructors # Pass other cyclists on the Left and call out when you do. 2. Stop at all stop lights and look for traffic running lights. 3. Be aware of drivers on cell phones and texting (we have already witnessed two accidents in the past week due to this problem, one involving a cyclist). 4. Avoid herd mentality and don t just follow others through stop signs or lights, look for yourself and NEVER call clear. 5. Ride Your Ride. Ride of Silence Wednesday, May 19th, 7PM Gallivan Center, and Worldwide! Check the ride calendar at for details on the Salt Lake edition of this ride to... HONOR those who have been injured or killed. RAISE AWARENESS that we are here. ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD. PAGE 5

Trekking the World s Bike Shows by Bill Delvie The bike show in Taipai, Taiwan in mid-march was a very big show in a building that had 5 floors of bikes and parts. Taiwan is a country that is a large supplier of bikes for us all to ride and enjoy. I see that the newest item being pushed that we should be thinking about very seriously is the E-bike. It will soon be in Salt Lake City but in large box stores such Wal-Mart and not in our local bike shops. With my travels in China I have two that I do enjoy but the main point is that if I have problems with the electric part of the bike, many places can fix the problem. It will be a long time till we have a local shop that can or will have the know-how to do the repair. The show was full of displays, dealers, and bikes... a real eye opener! Next to the big show later in April in Shanghai China. This is a different type of show as many of our bikes we ride today are made in Taiwan and as I read the text from Taiwan it is in a new building of 9 floors, so manufacturers and dealers from all over the world come to this show. The reason that it is easy to get into the country of Taiwan is that China has Visas that at times can be very hard to obtain. Some time ago I put my foot in a hole and find myself on the board of LEVA which is a big group from all over the world promoting E-BIKES. These are big heavy rascals for commuting which the largest group is from the EU and that is how they get around. I think soon we will see E-bikes in our bike shops. As I have said before I have two E-bikes in Beijing but they are folder types. They are very light and are fun to run around in. They are not very costly and batteries are easy to charge. Oh how things do change! VOLUNTEERS are always needed for major events: LRRH, contact Diane Downhour or Jeanne Allgood. ULCER, see the BCC website. Ride Leaders, contact Don Williams. Any Board member will be able to steer you in the direction of your interest so keep in touch with us. Did you know??? BCC is a member of... 7 News from Harriet Wallis Let's celebrate! I earned the Ski Utah Excellence in Journalism award for It's an enormous honor. Here's the scorecard for my published ski writing and ski photos this year -- and there's still more to come: 1) 25 ski stories + 26 photos in Ski & Snowboard News. 2) JRCA Design (a Salt Lake City architectural firm) chased me down to buy 2 of my photos of Brighton's Milly Lodge. They said my photos are better than their photographer's photos. 3) Stories for Ski Utah's Vacation Planner. 4) Menu for Ski Utah's New York media event. 5) Cover story and photo for the PSIA's magazine, The Instructors Edge. 6) 15 NASJA-West newsletters. 7) Brighton newsletter -- I do all the stories and photos. 8) Deer Valley requested 2 of my photos for their website. 9) A contract with NSAA to write a feature story on Park City Mountain Resort's $25 StartNOW program. 10) Wild Old Bunch. I sought advice from Alan Engen, Connie Marshall and Doug and Diane Blodsoe, and now I'm gathering biographies from Alta's Wild Old Bunch while they're still on the planet. The goal is to compile the biographies and let members download them as a PDF file. It's like pulling teeth to get the biographies, so you'll see this on my report next year too. 11) NEW: my Let's Go! website column for the Valley Journals. People read my ski stories so they asked me to create a year-round column. It's "Family fun and armchair adventures along the Wasatch Front."
