1 Chapter 1 : Digging for Gold Farmer Hick's Homestead Digging for Gold (Dodo Press) [Robert Michael Ballantyne] on blog.quintoapp.com *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. R. M. Ballantyne () was a Scottish juvenile fiction writer. The last few days have been unbelievably beautiful. Sunny, warm, very little cloud coverâ perfect weather for digging gold. Yes, we dig for gold on our homestead, Yukon Gold that is. Remember how tall the potato plants got in July, and I was wondering if all the growth had gone into the tops, never mind into delicious potatoes? Well, turns out the potatoes grew big too. Potatoes definitely do very well in cool and moist conditions. As a teen, Farmer Hick helped his dad with the potato harvest. The man had a green thumb and could grow anything. Farmer Hick says that the amount we get from 8 potato plants his dad would harvest the same from 2 or 3 plants. Could have been the fertility of his soil or the different climate, or maybe he talked and sang to his plants, in any case, the results were some truly amazing potatoes. They used to fill their cellar with big potato bags and each family unit in the extended family was given a bag or a box of potatoes as well. Our gorgeous potatoes have been waiting under the protective covering of the soil, waiting for digging day. The root cellar has been far too warm for storing potatoes, so the potatoes have to wait. Every shovel full of dirt reveals 8 or more potatoes. I pick out each potato and toss it in a pile, the pile is left out in the sun for a couple of hours sometimes overnight then the potatoes are sorted. The storage potatoes are put in a big bushel basket, potatoes to be used immediately go in a small bucket and are brought to the kitchen, and all the tiny potatoes go in another bucket. The bushel basket will be stored in the cellar which will hopefully cool down soon, all the tiny potatoes will be bottled and processed in the pressure canner, this makes for great, almost instant, potato salad for whenever the mood strikes. Just grab a jar off the pantry shelf, add some pickles, eggs, mayo and seasonings. Of course the potatoes that are accidentally cut open by the shovel need to be used up asap. The feeling of being outside in the garden at this time of year is invigorating, a true gift before the drudgery of winter sets in. One of my heroes, the late Tasha Tudor, loved digging up her potatoes late fall. For her it was a high point of the year although she had several high points, lol. Time to dig another row or two. Placer mining Gold in a panâ Alaska Placer mining is the technique by which gold that has accumulated in a placer deposit is extracted. Placer deposits are composed of relatively loose material that makes tunneling difficult, and so most means of extracting it involve the use of water or dredging. Gold panning Gold panning is mostly a manual technique of separating gold from other materials. Wide, shallow pans are filled with sand and gravel that may contain gold. The pan is submerged in water and shaken, sorting the gold from the gravel and other material. As gold is much denser than rock, it quickly settles to the bottom of the pan. The panning material is usually removed from stream beds, often at the inside turn in the stream, or from the bedrock shelf of the stream, where the density of gold allows it to concentrate, a type called placer deposits. Gold panning is the easiest and quickest technique for searching for gold, but is not commercially viable for extracting gold from large deposits, except where labor costs are very low or gold traces are substantial. Panning is often marketed as a tourist attraction on former gold fields. Before large production methods are used, a new source must be identified and panning is useful to identify placer gold deposits to be evaluated for commercial viability. Gold sluicing at Dilban Town, New Zealand, s Taking gold out of a sluice box, western North America, s Using a sluice box to extract gold from placer deposits has long been a very common practice in prospecting and small-scale mining. A sluice box is essentially a man made channel with riffles set in the bottom. The riffles are designed to create dead zones in the current to allow gold to drop out of suspension. The box is placed in the stream to channel water flow. Gold-bearing material is placed at the top of the box. The material is carried by the current through the volt where gold and other dense material settles out behind the riffles. Less dense material flows out of the box as tailings. Larger commercial placer mining operations employ screening plants, or trommels, to remove the larger alluvial materials such as boulders and gravel, before concentrating the remainder in a sluice box or jig plant. These operations typically include diesel powered, earth moving equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and rock trucks. Gold dredge Although this method has largely been replaced by modern methods, some dredging is done by small-scale miners using suction dredges. These are small machines that float on the water and are usually operated by one or two people. A suction dredge consists of a sluice box supported by pontoons, attached to a suction hose which is controlled by a miner working beneath the water. State dredging permits in many of the United States gold dredging areas specify a seasonal time period and area closures to avoid conflicts between dredgers and the spawning time of fish populations. Some states, such as Montana, require an extensive permitting procedure, including permits from the U. Corps of Engineers, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, and the local county water quality boards. Small suction dredges are much more efficient at extracting smaller gold than the old bucket line. This has improved the chances of finding gold. Other larger scale dredging operations take place on exposed river gravel bars at seasonal low water. These operations typically use a land based excavator to feed a gravel screening plant and sluice box floating in a temporary pond. The pond is excavated in the gravel bar and filled from the natural water table. This type of gold mining is characterized by its low cost, as each rock is moved only once. It also has low environmental impact, as no stripping of vegetation or overburden is necessary, and all process water is fully recycled. Rocker box[ edit ] Also called a cradle, it uses riffles located in a high-walled box to trap gold in a similar manner to the sluice box. A rocker box uses less water than a sluice box and is well suited for areas where water is limited. A rocking motion provides the water movement needed for the gravity separation of gold in placer material. Sometimes open-pit mining is used, such as at the Fort Knox Mine in central Alaska. Barrick Gold Corporation has one of the largest open-pit gold mines in North America located on its Goldstrike mine property in north eastern Nevada. Other gold mines use underground mining, where the ore is extracted through tunnels or shafts. At such depths, the heat is unbearable for humans, and air conditioning is required for the safety of the workers. The first such mine to receive air conditioning was Robinson Deep, at that time Page 2

3 the deepest mine in the world for any mineral. Large copper mines, such as the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah, often recover considerable amounts of gold and other metals along with copper. Some sand and gravel pits, such as those around Denver, Colorado, may recover small amounts of gold in their wash operations. The largest producing gold mine in the world, the Grasberg mine in Papua, Indonesia, is primarily a copper mine. Gold ore processing[ edit ]. Page 3

While a steady stream of water is directed to pass through, streambed material is shoveled into the upper-end of the box. The flow of water washes the streambed materials through the sluice and over the riffles, which trap the gold out of the material. The reason a sluice box works is that gold is extremely heavy and will work its way quickly down to the bottom of the materials being washed through the box. The gold then drops behind the riffles and remains there, because there is not enough water force behind the riffles to sweep the gold out into the main force of water again. A sluicing operation, when set up properly, can process the gold out of streambed material about as fast as it can be shoveled into the box. This can be many times more material than a panning operation can handle, yet with similar efficiency in gold recovery. How much material can be shoveled into a sluice box greatly depends upon the consistency and hardness of the material within the streambed itself, and how easily it can be broken away. A sluice requires a steady flow of water through the box to operate at its best efficiency. Most often, the box is placed in a stream or creek where water is moving rather swiftly, with the sluice being placed in such a way that a stream of water is directed through the box. Sluice Box Placement In locations where water is available, but is not moving fast enough to be channeled through the box for sluicing purposes, the water can be pumped or siphoned to the box with excellent results covered later. How much water is available, and whether or not it will need to be transported to your sluice box, is something that needs to be considered during the planning stages of a sluicing operation. Because so much more material can be processed with a sluice, than with a gold pan, streambed materials which contain far less gold values can be mined while recovering just as much or more gold. Therefore, if the streambed material had to pay a certain amount in gold values in to be worked with a gold pan to your satisfaction, gravel containing only a fraction of as many values can be worked with the same result using a sluice box. This is an important factor to grasp; because it means the modern sluice box opens up a tremendous amount of ground that can be profitably mined by an individual. Rip in the Field Motorized sluices are usually equipped with a recovery system that is set up with adjustable-length legs. This allows the box to be adjusted from side to side and front to back on uneven ground. This allows the water flow to be created for optimum gold recovery. Screening the larger-sized rocks out of material to be sluiced is one of the primary methods for improving fine small gold recovery. Any time you can screen larger rocks out, you can slow the water down through the sluice, which will allow even smaller particles of gold to become trapped inside the riffles. In normal sluicing, the operators must find a location alongside of a creek or river where the water is flowing just right, at the proper depth, to set up the sluice so the proper amount of water can be directed through. Once the sluice is set up, gold-bearing material must be carried to the sluice, screened separately, and carefully fed through the sluice box. With a motorized sluice, all you need is a supply of water within several hundred feet of where you want to dig. The screen and sluice assembly can be set up directly at the work site so that pay-dirt can be shoveled directly onto the screening section. Another advantage to the motorized sluice is that in some areas today, it is not legal to wash silt directly from the bank into an active waterway. With a motorized sluice set up some distance from the stream or river, you have an opportunity to utilize natural contours up on the land to slow the water down enough to allow the sediments to settle before if ever the water re-enters the creek or river. SAMPLING Just like in any other type of gold mining activity, the key to doing well is in digging sample holes to first find a high-grade gold deposit. Placer Geology In many places, there is more gold up on the banks than you will find in the river. This can sometimes be true on the Klamath River in northern California. Actually, it is not only that there is more gold on the banks than in the river. The gold on the banks can sometimes just be easier to get at for a small operation. What happened along the Klamath River, and in many other areas, is not difficult to understand. The old-timers started mining down in the creek or river, and moved uphill, allowing gravity to carry the water and tailings back down towards the creek or river. As the old-timers worked further up into the banks, often the gravel became deeper and more difficult to remove by Page 4

5 conventional hand methods. In time, the old-timers developed hydraulic mining. This is where they directed large volumes of water from nearby or sometimes distant creeks under great pressure through monitors huge pressure nozzles. The high-pressure water was used to wash large volumes of gravel through large sluice boxes placed on the banks of the creeks and rivers. As the sluicing operations cut further up into the banks, the sluice boxes were moved forward, which left tailings deposited on the banks. It is estimated that as much as percent of the gold washed right through the sluice boxes in hydraulic operations because of the large volume and velocity of water which such operations used. Hydraulic operations did not lose gold in the same amounts all of the time. Much of the gravel that these operations processed contained little or no gold. The concentrations of gold were found along bedrock or at the bottom of lower strata flood layers. So, valueless top-gravels were processed at volume speed, and they would try to slow down when getting into pay-dirt materials. Sometimes, however, they would cut into pay-dirt materials at volume speedâ before having a chance to slow down. This is where large volumes of gold would wash directly into the tailing piles. Since the time of large-scale hydraulic mining, there have been several occasions of extreme high water. The flood in the western United States is one example. Floods of such magnitude, all throughout gold country, re-deposited old hydraulic tailings piles into newly-formed streambeds up on the banks and within the active waterways. Places where gold was lost from hydraulic operations formed into new pay-streaksâ often only inches or a few feet from the surface. This is true all up and down the banks of the Klamath River â and probably many other rivers as wellâ which has created a wonderful and exciting opportunity for modern small-scale gold miners. Contrary to popular belief, many pay-streaks today are not found down along the bedrock. In fact, many of the pay-streaks surface miners are finding along the Klamath River are situated in a flood layer flood within two feet of the surface. This flood layer is often resting directly on top of undisturbed hydraulic tailings. Page 5

Imagine that you were alive in when the Gold Rush was going on in California. You get a call one day from your friend who has just found his first piece of gold and tells you to get to California as quick as possible because there is so much gold out here you can just walk outside and just pick up gold. So you get there as fast as you can and go out and start looking for gold but all you see is Dirt. You ask someone where all the gold is, because you were told that there is so much gold and it is just sitting on the ground for you to pick it up. They say no man, that is not true you have to DIG for it. So you get a shovel and start digging. You spend a couple hours and still find nothing. You ask someone else how long will you have to dig to find the gold? He says it could be quick or take along time. You say, well I could be sitting at my job working 8 hours a day and at the end of the week I could get a paycheck. It might not be huge, but at least I am trading my time for money. He said replies back, sorry but this is how this digging for gold thing works. Would you rather dig for gold or sit at your job? Since you are already there you decide to keep digging and sifting through tons of dirt. After a few more days you finally find a piece of gold. You are super excited because all those hours of digging and sifting have finally paid off! You see, that is exactly how network marketing works. You could have a good job, working 8am-5pm and get paid for you time. That is called trading time for dollars. However, in the network marketing industry you become a business owner and in that category you do not get paid time for dollars. You get paid on Results. Like the guy digging for gold who was out there for days digging. He did not get paid until he found gold, like us in the network marketing industry we do not get paid for showing people our business which could be many long hours. No, we only get paid once people start joining our business or buys our products. In this scenario people that say NO would represent dirt and the gold would represent the people who join your business and are considered the Aces, read my blog on the subject of Looking For Aces! We are out showing people our business, digging and sifting through the dirt trying to find the people that will be the ACE or super star on our team. You have to dig and dig and dig and dig, etcâ. That is why you never ever quit this business! Some people will join this industry and show a few people and quit because no one wants to join them in their business, so they blame the industry and tell everyone that it is a Scam. However they do not understand that this business is a simple numbers game, just like the sales industry. You have to stay in the business long enough to find the GOLD, and if you do your life will forever be changed! If you are in this industry or are thinking about joining this industry, always remember to Never Quit, and always be Digging for the Gold!
