The Bilge Pump Rocky Mountain Classics ROCKY MOUNTAIN CLASSICS, 41ST CHAPTER OF THE ANTIQUE & CLASSIC BOAT SOCIETY INSIDE T H E B I L G E N O V P U M P T H R U M A R C H THIS EDITION Denver Boat Show Message from our President 2015 Events What to Know Before You Go RMC RAFFLE! BOARD MEMBERS John Stiller, President Jeff Dwight, Vice President Charlie Simons, Treasurer Vickie Rutkowski, Secretary Directors: Steve Frasier Michael Vannier Doug Brown Jerry Ross Wayne Grabow Grand entrance! Rocky Mountain Classics Display at the main entrance of the 2015 Denver Boat Show marked the 30th year for the Denver Boat show, so the theme of the show was Then and Now. In keeping with that, the Rocky Mountain Classics display of classic boats and related items greeted visitors at the main entrance along with another display of classic water skis. RMC made a fine showing with six member boats, two classic motors, several classic boat models, and a vintage fog horn (among other antique devices) that was a big hit with the kids. Jeff and Diane Waco did their usual GREAT job coordinating Poloris, used to this show. In addition to the coordination work required before the take a bearing. show, Jeff and Diane set up the display, took it down after the show, and in between spent many hours working the show, greeting visitors and sharing their love of the RMC and classic boating. Jeff and Diane our heartfelt appreciation for your efforts! When you see these members, please be sure to thank them for braving winter weather and downtown Denver traffic to show their boats, helping to keep the Rocky Mountain Classics in the public eye: Gene Schiferl (Mahogany Lady), Doug Brown (Sea Grape), Bob Phillips (Shearwater), Mike Novick (One of My Girls), Wayne Grabow (Mountain Dancer), and Jeff Waco (Wonder Years.)
P A G E 2 Spring 2015 The boating season is quickly approaching where the days are getting longer, the ice is clearing from our lakes, and I know a few us are literally days away from launching. Yes, boating starts in early April on several of our front range reservoirs. I d like to welcome our new members and others into the family of classic boating. We look forward to meeting you on the lake and shoreline, sharing your stories and knowledge. I am tremendously grateful for the cumulative knowledge/ history that our club members bring to each event and share with everyone we touch. President John Stiller, at Grand Lake, 2014 This brings me to an important point. Let s talk participation! A week ago we had excellent participation from our dedicated board. We are working hard this year to bring your new ideas including better ways to communicate to members and the community. We are planning a lighter format at shows and new approaches to our display boats this season. We are sharing lots of ideas to have more fun on the water and not just spend a day at the docks. I would ask each member to reach out to me about what is working well for them in the club and what fresh ideas or perspective do they have for us this season. I started the poker runs a few years back, let me know if that should continue or perhaps we do something different. Bottom line, keep the ideas coming! We will be having lots of fun this year! This newsletter, Facebook, our web site, and ultimately our members, their energy and contributions are what make us a great club! Like me, many of our members are on the water almost every weekend. I will be out on the water many weekends (early) Chatfield this year between the shows. I will post this on our Facebook page on Thursday nights so others can be informed and join in. Simply go to Facebook.com, log in, type in Rocky Mountain Classics, and you will find us there. If you need help, just call me. I look forward to seeing you out on the water! John Stiller President carrnut@msn.com
P A G E 3 The first event of our 2015 Boating season will be a gathering at the Bent Prop Bar & Grill, hosted by Doug and Laurie Brown. The Bent Prop Bar & Grill is actually Doug and Laurie s back patio where they have created a bar and grill worthy of Jimmy Buffett. Depending on the spring weather, this may be an actual boating event on Carter Lake, or it may be a really good excuse for club members to get together for food, drink, and fun! As they did last year, the Browns are providing all of the food and beer for this gathering. You can bring other drinks and/or sides if you like, but it's not necessary. They will have a tip jar on the bar for contributions to help defray the cost. This is a Member & Invited Guests Only event, and you must RSVP to Doug at woodworking72@gmail.com or by May 10, Things to know before you go: Carter Lake General Information Three miles long and about one mile wide, this beautiful 1,100-acre reservoir is surrounded by 1,000 acres of public lands. It's a great place for fishing, sailing, water skiing, camping, picnicking, swimming, scuba diving, and rock climbing. As part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project to divert water from the west slope to the east slope for drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower generation, the reservoir is jointly operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District who manage water levels for irrigation, municipal, and industry use. Larimer County manages recreation. Carter Lake requires entrance and camping permits, and is open year round. At 5,760 feet in elevation, it is nestled
P A G E 4 in the foothills southwest of Loveland, Colorado, and northwest of Berthoud, Colorado. Fees for Carter Lake: $7/vehicle and $7/trailer; $14 total Required Inspections To comply with regulations, Horsetooth Reservoir and Carter Lake require mandatory vessel inspections. All watercraft including their motors, trailers, compartments, and any other associated equipment or containers may be inspected for exotic invasive species (Aquatic Nuisance Species or ANS) before launch or departure from high risk waters. Exclusions include hand-launched rafts, kayaks, belly boats, float tubes, canoes, windsurfer boards, sail boards, or inner tubes. Recognizing the serious impact possible from ANS, and to prevent its spread by recreational boating or any other human means, Larimer County joins Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other waterway managers in a robust strategy designed to ensure sustainable recreational boating and other uses. The risk and cost are too high once ANS infestation has reached a critical level. A boater may be denied access if not cooperating at an inspection point, or the boat may be placed under quarantine if inspectors think there is a serious risk of spreading ANS. Boaters circumventing the described procedures will be subject to fine. The Larimer County Department of Natural Resources' program complies with the Aquatic Nuisance Species Watercraft Inspection Handbook, available on line. This event is a Rocky Mountain Classics institution. For 13 years, Rich Ball has hosted the club for an early June boating event on Lake Loveland. The 2015 Loveland Regatta is on June 6. If you plan to attend, please RSVP directly to Rich Ball at richard.balllaw@gmail.com or no later than May 30, Things to know before you go: We launch at the southeast end of the lake at US34/Eisenhower, beginning around 8:30am. Lake Loveland is a private lake with no public After the Regatta, 2014 boating so Rich has to be there to open the ramp for us. No worries about launching. There are always plenty of club members milling around, eager to help. Keep in mind it s early June so if you get in the water to launch a boat, it will be cold. Depending on the expected weather, you may want a change of shoes. When full, Lake Loveland fills a basin of 475 acres with a deep-water depth of 39 feet, so there s plenty of room for water sports. Boaters spend the morning hours cruising and then enjoy their picnic lunches on the sandy beach at the north side of the lake. After lunch, the RMC Board holds the second of our four board meetings for the year, while members take a few more turns around the lake. Around 2pm, weather permitting, Rich leads a boat parade around the lake. Some members pull their boats out after the parade; others cruise over to Rich Ball s boat dock, where at 5pm, club members convene for the annual cocktail party. Those attending the cocktail party bring an appetizer, a side dish, or a dessert and their favorite beverage to enjoy along with Rich s grilled meats. The camaraderie may continue late into the evening. If it does, and you plan to stay over, you ll find that Loveland has almost every hotel/motel chain possible. The Residence Inn, Candlewood Suites, and the Hampton Inn all have particularly good comments on TripAdvisor.com.
P A G E 5 At an elevation of 8369 feet lies Grand Lake, the largest natural body of water in Colorado and the headwaters of the Colorado River. It s the jewel of the Three Lakes Region of Grand County. Grand Lake has also been called Spirit Lake. The Legend of Spirit Lake, a local tale written in 1882, explains why. As the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes started moving into the Middle Park area, which was occupied by the Ute Indians, tensions escalated. One night, as an ominous thunderstorm rolled in over the Never Summer Mountains, an Arapaho-Cheyenne war party attacked a small tribe of Ute Indians camping on the shores of Grand Lake. Thinking quickly the Utes hurriedly loaded their children, squaws, and elderly onto pine rafts and set them adrift on the cold, dark water. Grand Lake, Early Sunday morning. There was a bloody battle. Both sides took heavy casualties, but eventually the Utes were victorious, driving off the war party. Relieved, the Ute Chief turned to the lake, but instead of seeing the rafts filled with families, he saw only splintered timbers floating on the surface. The storm had capsized the rafts and all were lost. The next morning, the frightened Utes observed the spirits of their dead families rising as ghostly mists above the glistening surface of the lake. They fled, vowing never to return to spirit lake. If you ve been on Grand Lake on almost any morning, you ve seen those ghostly forms rising from the surface of the placid water, but hopefully you WILL return and enjoy our 2015 event. Our Grand Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show is our first public event of the 2015 season. Our boats are on display at the Grand Lake town docks. As always, this show is free to the public. Each year, the show coordinator (this year Jeff Dwight) works with the town of Grand Lake to pick the date for the show. Because the town prefers not to have too many things going the same weekend, we are scheduled around their Buffalo Barbeque Stampede Weekend. That s true in The Buffalo Barbeque is 7/18 and our show is 7/25. Grand Lake is a classic mountain town and a great boating venue. Many members make it a long weekend, arriving Friday and leaving Sunday or Monday. Positioned at the end of Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake has a thriving tourism trade in normal years, and that will be doubly true in 2015, the centennial anniversary of the park. If you plan to send a night or two for our show, it s not too early to make your reservation. There are several local lodges in Grand Lake offering acceptable accommodations. Most offer rooms that are clean, with modest décor. They seem a little pricey, but as with all real estate, it s LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
P A G E 6 The most convenient place to stay is Western Rivera which is just a half-block from the docks. Despite the fact that it was once featured on the Travel Channel s Hotel Impossible, it s really not a bad place to stay. You can book a room in the main building, in the strip along the road facing the lake, or in the Courtyard, across from the town library. Lemmon Lodge by the Yacht Club and Daven Haven are also popular places for members to stay. And of course, there are many Grand Lake properties on VRBO.COM Things to know before you go: You can launch Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. The boat ramp for Grand Lake is on the southeast shore. Remember that a Colorado State Mussel Inspection is required before you can launch. You can also launch on Shadow Mountain Reservoir. A boat ramp (also offering Colorado State Mussel Inspections) is available near the Green Ridge campground. Keep in mind that Shadow Mountain is the shallowest of the 3 lakes in the string (the last being Lake Granby), with a maximum depth of about 24 feet. Normally, boats are not allowed to be left overnight at the Grand Lake public docks. We are able to leave our boats overnight because Jeff works with the Town of Grand Lake to get us a special event permit that allows us to stay overnight Friday and Saturday nights. If you plan to leave your boat at the docks overnight, you must get a copy of the permit from Jeff and display it prominently on your boat. Also, at dock side, we display a Boat Details placard, identifying each boat s owner, statistics, and home port. Members who arrive Friday evening usually meet up informally for dinner and/or some evening cruising. Responding to the feedback of our membership, the plan is to reduce the show time at the docks. The official show hours will be publicized once they are approved by the Grand Lake Town Council, but the hope is that we ll spend the morning at the docks, have an early parade, and then be off for an afternoon of boating and relaxation. Keep in mind that our permits do not reserve the docks during the day, and those docks are in big demand with other boaters on the lake. When you leave the dock, you may have to wait to find an open dock when you return. Since only boats with the special permit can stay at the dock overnight, the later in the day it gets, the less problem you ll have getting a dock. Saturday late afternoon, the club meets for a picnic supper. This year, we ll meet at the outdoor space of Daven Haven, a local lodge located at 504 Marina Drive. As it did in the days of the Utes, a Saturday afternoon thunderstorm often rolls in over the Never Summer Range, leaving the lake placid for Saturday evening and Sunday boating. 8 P A G E 8 Frisco, CO is the geographic center of Summit County, and as such is at the heart of a vacation paradise. Frisco s roughly 3000 permanent residents, and thousands of annual visitors, enjoy a unique, flavorful community, boasting many nice shops and good restaurants. The Town of Frisco has worked hard to preserve its history and small town atmosphere. Main Street has no stop lights and no tall buildings, and there s no local mail delivery. Boats at the Frisco Dock, 2014 Frisco is perched on the edge of the Dillon Reservoir. The idea to dam the Blue River to create a reservoir for Denver started in the early 1900s. The Denver Water Board took advantage of the Great Depression and acquired most of the land for the reservoir for the price of back taxes since many Dillon residents were unable to pay their property taxes. By the mid-1950 s, the Board had already acquired most of the water rights, and in 1956 they notified the remaining residents that they must sell and leave by September 15,1961. Construction on the dam began that fall and finished in The Dillon Reservoir, or Lake Dillon as it is also known, has been a popular Colorado boating venue ever since.. On August 8, the Frisco Marina again plays host to the Rocky Mountain Classics for our second in-the-water boat show of the 2015 season. We get great support from Marina General Manager, Phil Hofer, and his staff and that makes this show an annual favorite. As Phil recently wrote, The Frisco Bay Marina has been working tirelessly for the last 10 years to provide a world class marina atmosphere at 9017 with the addition of a seasonal restaurant, bath house, concrete decked docks, security gates, street lights, roundabout lighthouse, and of course an outstanding staff that is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. We look forward to your visit and appreciate your efforts to make Frisco Bay Marina your boating destination. Things to Know Before You Go: There is a car show at the Marina the same weekend as our show, and the cars will be parked where we normally park our trailers. We ll park our vehicles and trailers in the overflow lot where the Fruit Stand in located. This lot is on the left before your get to the stop light on your way out of the marina. There is a blue sign that says overflow parking to the left. We can launch beginning Friday afternoon and tie up at the long main dock. Boats are normally on display on Saturday from 9am to about 2pm. At this show, we invite the public to vote for their favorite boat with a people s choice ballot, and we award the trophy at the Saturday evening gathering. After the show there is a boat parade, weather permitting. The parade runs around the lake and past the gas dock, where an announcer calls out the name, make and size of each boat and the owner s name. The parade usually draws a crowd that lines the gas dock for a closer look at our classic boats. Then, it s an afternoon of boating and maybe a poker run, followed by an evening gathering where we award the People s Choice Trophy and the Poker Run Winner are announced. Sunday morning, more boating! If you plan to spend the weekend, be sure to check the motel ratings on TripAdvisor.com. You may find interesting options there. And don t forget to visit our favorite Frisco Restaurant The Boatyard American Grill. Thank you, Wayne and Cindy Spaulding, for giving us such a great dining opportunity!
P A G E 9 Doug and Laurie Brown are raffling off one week, October 17-23, 2015, at their condo in the Grand Caymans, a prize worth $1300! Tickets are $25 each, and the bulk of the proceeds of the ticket sales will be donated to the Rocky Mountain Classics treasury! Before you think $25 is too high for a raffle ticket, take a look at these pictures. Knowing how creative and talented both Doug and Laurie are, you would expect this condo to look good, and it doesn t disappoint. The condo is light and airy with two bedrooms and a full kitchen boasting new appliances. The complex has a great pool and beach access. This is a great opportunity to experience the best of the Grand Caymans for the price of a raffle ticket. The winner is responsible for his or her own airfare, car rental, meals, and incidental expenses. The raffle prize covers only the condo itself for one week.
P A G E 10 Early March, it just so happened that Jeff and Diane Waco were in Florida looking for a new boat, and Bob and Sandy Phillips were in Florida as part of a 2-month long RV Trip. The four took advantage of that happy coincidence and met up on the beach of Marco Island near Naples. You might remember that late February, we had some of the coldest weather Jeff Waco, Diane Waco, Sandy Phillips of our winter season. and Bob Phillips. When Bob texted me Marco Island, FL, this picture he made a March 2, 2015 point to mention they were enjoying NO SNOW. Looks like a fun time!
