Bellflower: October 2010 Mystery KAL Designed by Mary Ellen Langieri for Summit Yarn 2010 All Rights Reserved This is meant to be a drapey scarf worked in soft yarn. The width will be between 6-7 inches, depending on your yarn choice and needle size used. I recommend a US 6 needle (4mm) and dk or lighter weight yarn ( yards; more if you would like a longer scarf). Happy knitting! Part of what made this knit-a-long such a mystery was how challenging this pattern was to write with accuracy. It is not that any part separately was difficult; it was more the transitions from one type of lace to the next that were very challenging to get written down on paper. For me, much of the design process comes from a very silent place in my heart since home and hearth are innately noisy places this space of the heart is something for which I am very grateful. This project was inspired by people, places and the knitting I have been spending time with this past year. I started with a sketch of my design idea, then charted it and then knit it and reknit it until it took shape. Please note: there are at least three other scarf ideas contained within this amalgam I will point out these design elements as we go through the pattern. xox m.e. ;-) CLUE #1: Cast on 49 stitches and work three rows of *(k1, p1); repeat from *, end with K1. This is a no brainer and is called SEED STITCH. Of course, you can do a whole scarf in this stitch and in my Ravelry Pattern Store there are two one skein scarves as free downloads which use this as their base stitch. Seed stitch is an absolute classic a knitting icon if you will. I love this stitch because it makes beautiful edges, it makes your knitting wider than it might otherwise be with any other stitch, and it is elegant no matter where you use this stitch, it looks good. CLUE #2: ABBREVIATIONS NEEDED FOR THIS SECTION OF THE SCARF
YO = YARN OVER K2TOG = KNIT 2 STITCHES TOGETHER SSK = SLIP 1 ST AS IF TO KNIT, SLIP ANOTHER ST AS IF TO KNIT, INSERT LH NDL THROUGH THESE STS AND KNIT THEM TOGETHER. PSSO = PASS THE SLIPPED ST OVER THE NEXT ST ON THE RH NEEDLE K3TOG = KNIT THREE STS TOGETHER YO X 2 = BRING YARN FORWARD BETWEEN THE NEEDLES, OVER RH NDL, YARN FORWARD & OVER NDL 2 ND TIME. TBL = THROUGH THE BACK LOOP KFB = KNIT INTO THE FRONT OF THE STITCH, KNIT INTO THE BACK OF THE STITCH, THEN DROP OLD ST FROM NDL. ROW 1: (K1, P1, K1), YO, K3, *(YO, K2TOG, K1, SSK, YO K3)* X 5 (this means repeat between the asterisks five times), YO, (K1, P1, K1) = RIGHT SIDE ROW. ROW 2: (K1, P1, K1), PURL TO LAST THREE STS, (K1, P1, K1) = WRONG SIDE ROW. ROW 3: (K1, P1, K1), K1, YO, SLIP 1-K2TOG-PSSO, YO, *(K2TOG, K1, SSK, YO, SLIP 1-K2TOG-PSS0, YO)* X5, K1, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 4: (K1, P1, K1), PURL TO LAST THREE STITCHES, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 5: (K1, P1, K1), *(SSK, YO, K3TOG, IN NEXT ST: K1/YO/K1)* X5, SSK, YO, K3TOG, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 8: (K1, P1, K1), P3, *(P 1 ST WRAP OF DOUBLE YO, K 2 ND WRAP OF DOUBLE YO, P5)* X4, PURL 1 ST WRAP OF NEXT YO, KNIT 2 ND WRAP OF YO, P3, (K1, P1, K1).
Bellflower Scarf at the end of CLUE #2 THIS STITCH RUFFLES THE EDGE JUST A BIT. These stitches could be used for any project; so why choose a scarf? My friend Donna LOVES scarves. She knits and gifts them AND she wears them; all different ones and I can see she really enjoys this. The next inspiration came from the 22 Leaves Shawlette KAL I loved those columns of double yarnovers. The next clue for this scarf uses these columns and on their own they would make a beautiful scarf (i.e., cast on 43 sts and complete 5 rows of seed stitch in the fifth row of seed stitch work to the last five sts and end by p2tog, k1, p1, k1 then work what is called row 9 and row 10 below to your desired length in your last row kfb into one of the stitches and finish with 5 rows of seed stitch). After completing clue #2 you should have 42 stitches on our knitting needle. We continue: ROW 9: (K1, P1, K1), *(P1, K2TOG, K1, YOX2, K1 SSK)* X5, P1, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 10: (K1, P1, K1), *(K1, P2, P 1 ST LOOP OF YO, K 2 ND LOOP OF YO, P2)* X5, K1, (K1, P1, K1). Here is a photo of what your work should look like at the end of this clue (and you should still have 42 stitches at this point): Abbreviations needed for the next section: M1 = make one by backward loop cast-on to the RH needle P3TOG = purl three sts together CLUE #4: in which the scarf begins to look exactly like Campanula or Bellflower

Appearance of Bellflower at the end of the next clue. If you need help with yarnovers, see the blog for clue #5 where the most frequently asked questions are answered for you. This next clue will help you close the leaves on either side of your beautiful Bellflower. ROW 47: (K1, P1, K1), YO, SSK, K6, K2TOG, YO, P1, YO, SSK, K6, K2TOG, YO, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 52: (K1, P1, K1), K3, P4, K7, P4, K3, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 53: (K1, P1, K1), K3, YO, SSK, K2TOG, YO, K7, YO, SSK, K2TOG, YO, K3, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 54: (K1, P1, K1), K4, P2, K9, P2, K4, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 55: (K1, P1, K1), K4, YO, SSK, YO, K4, M1, K1, M1, K4, YO, K2TOG, YO, K4, (K1, P1, K1). 31 stitches ROW 56: (K1, P1, K1), K25, (K1, P1, K1). This next section is an Orenburg Lace pattern called: Fish Eyes. I love the architecture of this type of lace. It uses a garter stitch ground united with yo-k2tog s in a way that produces a highly textured fabric; so much so, the fabric appears almost to have been crocheted. The other thing that intrigues me about this lace is that at first glance I would not be able to guess its construction it is a bit of a puzzle.
At the end of this next section, your scarf will look like the above picture. Again, a whole scarf could be done in this Fish Eyes stitch it is in garter stitch, though, so remember to budget more yarn than you normally would. ROW 57: (K1, P1, K1), *(K2, YO, K2TOG)* X6, K1, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 58: (K1, P1, K1), K1, *(K2, YO, K2TOG)* X6, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 59: (K1, P1, K1), *(K2, YO, K2TOG)* X6, K1, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 60: (K1, P1, K1), KNIT TO LAST THREE STS, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 61: (K1, P1, K1), K2, *(K2, YO, K2TOG)* X5, K3, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 62: (K1, P1, K1), K3, *(K2, YO, K2TOG)* X5, K2, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 63: (K1, P1, K1), K2, *(K2, YO, K2TOG)* X5, K3, (K1, P1, K1). ROW 64: (K1, P1, K1), KNIT TO LAST THREE STS, (K1, P1, K1). ROWS 65-72: REPEAT ROWS ROWS 73-79: REPEAT ROWS After ROW 79, cut your yarn leaving two yards for grafting (or three needle bind-off) later. Slip these stitches to a stitch holder and put in a safe place. Go back to clue number one and repeat this process but then go to the next section for the body of this scarf.
The inspiration for the middle section of the Bellflower Scarf came from Suzy s Shokay sweater. It was a raglan sweater knit from the neck down and the increases were unusual they were right next to each other, not separated by one or two stitches, as is traditional. I liked the texture this idea created, so I brought the idea to this party. We have one more abbreviation: P2TOG = purl two stitches together. The P2TOG on the wrong side row paired with ssk on the right side row and a basic faggoting stitch gives a highly textured RIB-LIKE appearance reminiscent of the Seaman s scares featured in Myrna Stahman s book. You can make this scarf as long as you like, but if one skein is all you have, it will be enough for a flattering, neck-warming beautiful scarf. After you have completed clue #6 for the second time, you will continue as below and knit the body of the scarf. When you are nearly out of yarn, work one more wrong side row with a p2tog before the last three edge stitches. This will put your stitch count back down to 31 stitches and you will be ready to graft this section back on to the first section you knit. (For pictorial directions to Kitchener Stitch, see my Newborn Baby Socks free download either on my blog or in my Ravelry Pattern Store.) Set-up for Clue #7: You have 31 stitches and after this row you will have 32 stitches -- (K1, P1, K1), K1, P4, *(YO, P2TOG, P2)* X4, YO, P3, K1, (K1, P1, K1). REMEMBER THIS IS A WRONG SIDE ROW. NEXT RS ROW: (K1, P1, K1), P1, YO, SSK, *(K2, YO, SSK)* X5, K2TOG, YO, P1, (K1, P1, K1). WRONG SIDE: (K1, P1, K1), K1, P4, *(YO, P2TOG, P2)* X5, K1, (K1, P1, K1). Repeat the above two rows until you have two yards remaining. End by completing the wrong side row as follows: (K1, P1, K1), K1, P4, *(YO, P2TOG, P2)* X4, YO, P2TOG, P1, P2TOG, (K1, P1, K1). 31 stitches To finish, place the first piece you knit back on a needle with the 2 yards of yarn at the point end of the needle so it is available for grafting (or a three-needle bind-off). Graft pieces together and bury ends. Block scarf in your preferred method. Wear and Enjoy! Summityarnstudio@aol.com
