2 General Points Linesman responsibilities: Linesman drops ALL face-offs Initiate all icings Responsible for off-sides calls All other responsibilities linesman traditionally have A GREAT linesman will make the refs think they are working a 4-man Referee responsibilities: Refs treat system similar to how they would in 4-man Back referee completes all icings Assist linesman with off-sides calls when needed

3 Center Ice Faceoff Linesman conducts faceoff Referees line up similar to how they would as if they were linesmen in a 1-2 system: Visiting team start of game and start of periods Happy team after goals Referee not reporting goal shall conduct line change and line up on opposite side of score keeper s bench

4 End Zone Positioning Linesman outside blue line and responsible for all line calls Referees keep diagonal alignment similar to 2-man/4-man

5 End Zone Positioning Similar to 4-man, referees have freedom to move behind the net when needed. R2 should move across the ice to keep the diagonal unless the play quickly transitions. R1 should switch sides of the ice while moving up with play.

6 End Zone Positioning Zone Face-off Linesman treats face-off as they would in the 1-2 R1 lines up as they would in 1-2 R2 conducts line change and takes a position to cover the blue line for potential off sides L releases R2 from the blue line once they recover to the neutral zone.

7 End Zone Positioning PK Situation Penalty Kill situations create a dangerous position off the face off Two officials next to each other in off the glass situations R1 should work to switch sides as soon as they can

8 End Zone Positioning PK Situation (Cont d) R2 and L can now potentially yo-yo as if they were both linesman if the situation arises R2 should be aware to cover the blue line for L

9 Play Transitions R2 skates backwards to home base as they would in 4-man L reads the play and makes the call at the blue line R1 moves up with play

10 Play Transitions If the linesman is slow getting to the blue line, R2 shall take responsibility for making the zone entry call Some rules of thumb for referees to determine if they should make the call for the linesman: L is not moving towards the line (held up by play) L is not yet past center ice (slow reading the play) L is communicating they need a cover

11 Neutral Zone Play The linesman should avoid getting stuck in the neutral zone, even if play is in the neutral zone This forces both referees to cover their respective blue lines Instead, the linesman should attempt to anticipate play and choose a blue line to cover This frees up that referee to watch the play without having to focus on a blue line.

12 Neutral Zone Play If L anticipates correctly, R2 is now in a better positon to read the play and get in position on the goal line If L anticipates wrong, R1 will cover the line while R2 still has been freed up to focus on play.

13 Neutral Zone Face-Off R2 takes a position similar to what they would as a linesman to cover the blue line R1 lines up similar to how they would in a 4-man being aware of making a zone entry call if L cannot transition from the face off quick enough.

14 Icing L initiates all icings and transitions with play to be in position in case icing is washed out R2 completes icing, retrieves puck, hands off to L, and positions inside the zone for the face-off R1 transitions with play in case icing is washed out and then conducts line change when icing is completed

15 Rules of Thumb Good communication is needed between refs and linesman to understand who is making line calls Referees should avoid wash outs for off sides calls unless absolutely necessary Linesman should attempt to retrieve pucks when possible Allows refs to maintain order ONLY if all players have been accounted for Linesman should attempt to escort players to the penalty box when possible. Referees need to be aware of situation where the linesman may need to be covered. Referees need to be aware when they need to be a linesman as well: Scrum situations, separating players between whistles, being between players and benches after goals.
